Discussion is devoted to the general principles, key techniques and prototype implementation of the object-oriented design method for SPC switching software development. The emphasis is placed on the concept of "concurrent object model" and the procedure of constructing switching systems based on the model. Design results are presented with explanations. In addition, the main features of and implementation approaches to real-time systems as well as the efficiency of the OOD method are also discussed.

This paper presents a modified multiband excitation (M/sup 2/BE) speech coding algorithm which can achieve high-quality synthesized speech at 4.8, 3.6, 2.4 and 1.2 kb/s. The computer simulation results show that the synthesized speech is quite natural even at rate as low as 2.4 kb/s. This algorithm has been successfully implemented on a single TMS320C31 floating point processor and informal listening test demonstrates that the speech quality is quite good between 1.2-4.8 kb/s.

The demand for satellite communications systems has evolved to include personal mobile services and the provision of fixed services to rural areas. Following on from central involvement in all generations of INMARSAT's mobile communications space segment, Marconi Space has been developing advanced payload concepts for geostationary satellites to provide regional services. These retain the heritage gained from the novel payload architecture designed and successfully delivered by Marconi Space for the INMARSAT 3 spacecraft. This paper starts with the top level payload requirements for an example regional system and develops these into a generic payload architecture. The key technology issues are identified, and solutions provided, based on the extensive Marconi Space experience acquired through development of mobile payloads and internal development programmes. Comparisons are made with the issues associated with the proposed global constellation systems.

A low phase deviation PSK (LPD-PSK) signal can be expressed combining the carrier power spectrum and sinX/X power spectrum. The carrier spectrum of the LPD-PSK signal is used for AM radio signal transmission, and the sinX/X spectrum is used for the digital code transmission respectively. The LPD-PSK signal sends the digital code with AM signal simultaneously. This paper describes the expression of LPD-PSK signal compared to Mth PSK signals.

Conformance testing of a protocol is used to guarantee the correctness of the implementation. Testing is done by applying a sequence of inputs to the implementation under test (IUT) and observing the corresponding output sequence of the IUT. The sequence of inputs and corresponding outputs is called the test sequence. A new finite state machine (FSM) model-FSMw (FSM with weighted transition) is presented. In the FSMw, every transition has its transfer weight-the 'time' consumed in the transition. The FSMw is more practical than FSM, especially in communication systems. After modeling of FSMw, a new method for generating test cases with minimum total weight value-UIOf method is' given. An examples is illustrated to explain the method.

A new technique for the control of waiting time jitter in pulse-stuffing digital multiplexing systems is proposed. Combining a new threshold modulation scheme and an efficient threshold boundary optimization process, this method achieved significant improvement in waiting jitter control capability. By using the optimum threshold boundary, the proposed threshold modulation scheme converts the waiting time jitter into a high enough frequency that the jitter can be rejected by the phase smoothing circuit. To analyze the performance of this new method, a simulation model is built. The simulation results are compared with other pulse stuffing algorithms and demonstrates the effectiveness of the new proposal for jitter control. All of the parameters of the design can be emulated by a software program in advance. This new method is named "optimum random stuff threshold modulation (ORSTM)".

Within the mobile communications scenario, the DECT (Digital European Cordless Telecommunications) systems give rise to an increasing interest, addressing various and new market segments. The potential of the DECT standard is due to the variety of offered services, and the possibility of coping with different application scenarios, combined with the limited cost of the equipment. Generally the DECT (operating in the 1880-1900 MHz range) appears competitive in serving high traffic areas (it is able to clear traffic figures approaching 10000 Erlang/sq km/floor) and can cover urban, suburban and also spots in rural environments, without the need for frequency planning. The ETSI (European Telecommunications Standard Institute) has made great efforts in enhancing and making the DECT access technology flexible, by defining a new network element, the Wireless Relay Station (WRS). This paper giver an overview of DECT radio coverage possibilities and related service quality. A description of the REP WRS radio access strategy and the offered performance is given. The WRS has been defined by the ETSI in an ETS (European technical standard) describing two concepts, one of which is named the Repeater Part (REP).

We describe a study conducted for the packet assembler/disassembler (PAD) in the WorldSpan protocol conversion service provided by AT&T. The PAD consists of several general processors, memory system, and a communications system. The protocol conversion is carried out by three processes within the PAD. A simulation model was developed as an aid for the optimal configuration and performance estimation of the PAD. The model includes the polling of the multi-drop lines, message handling among the processes, multi-processor process scheduling, and outbound link delay. The PAD performance is evaluated in terms of end-to-end delay, the delay components corresponding to different stages in the system processor usage, context switching and so on, Our study provides insights into the impact of some changes in the configuration or parameters on the PAD, as well as the performance tuning of a general multi-processor system.

The objective of a bandwidth-management and traffic-control strategy is to achieve high utilization of network resources while sustaining an acceptable grade of service for all connections. A proposed parallel communications scheme can achieve efficient network utilization by balancing and smoothing network traffic. This paper investigates the bandwidth-requirement reduction potential of the parallel communications scheme. The equivalent bandwidth requirements estimated using the fluid-flow approximation and stationary bit-rate distribution approximation are presented.
