ABSTRACT Though Local content laws (LCLs) remain an essential tool in developing local capacities, ensuring skills transfers, community participation, enhancing linkages between the construction sector and other sectors of the economy amid competition in both the developed and developing economies, Ghana’s construction industry has been without a Local content law. This study determined the principal and sub constraints to the development of a Local content law for the Ghanaian construction industry, using principal component analysis (PCA). The use of PCA, varimax rotation in data analysis aided in reducing the large set of constraints to four principal components. Using a questionnaire survey, 667 indigenous practitioners validated 21 constraints, conceptualized from literature and structured interview, based on their knowledge and/or experience. Correlations between the 21 variables showed that four principal components explained the constraints to the development of a Local content law for the Ghanaian construction industry: political and economic, capacity, external supports, and belief constraints. It was also revealed that 4 out of the 21 constraints were peculiar to Ghana only. Findings and recommendations of this study may be useful for industry stakeholders who are seeking innovative ways to develop indigenous construction firms’ competitiveness and capacity and LCL related decisions.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we explored the influence of sources of motivation on young women’s career choice in secondary schools in New Zealand and their interest in construction-related careers. We employed internal sources of motivation – Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; and external sources of motivations – individual in close association with young women and social media to achieve this aim. These factors were supported by past research in career choice and the construction industry. A questionnaire survey was carried out on young women in a secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand and statistical analysis using ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation was used to ascertain correlations and their level of significance. We found that mothers and self-actualization needs were the most important external and internal sources of motivation for young women to make a career choice. Concerning the construction-related careers investigated, we found that the perception of their friends, information circulated on social media and being safe (Security needs) influenced the young women’s interest in pursuing a quantity surveying career. On the other hand, the desire to be socially accepted (Social needs) deterred young women from choosing construction management as a future career. The result of this study showed that young women’s perception of construction-related careers depends on the career itself. It suggests that there may be careers that will be perceived positively by young women and therefore, should be explored. The results of this study are essential as they provide insights into a current issue for the construction industry. Recruitment programmes targetted on these sources of motivation are recommended to increase the interest of young women on construction-related careers.

ABSTRACT Little research exists concerning the differences of spatial abilities among Construction Professionals (CP) compared to other STEM and Non-STEM Professionals. The literature on spatial abilities in STEM vocations was reviewed and summarized to form research questions to test practitioners’ perceptions on spatial abilities. This study used a survey and the Purdue Spatial Visualization Test: Rotations (PSVT:R) to identify if specific activities, experiences, or education are perceived to improve mental rotation abilities among practicing construction/related fields professionals. Differences in spatial ability were measured and a statistically significant difference was found between CPs and Non-STEM Professionals (p =.016). Results suggest that the activity of drawing to enhancing spatial ability was attributed more frequently among high scoring individuals (52%) than low scoring individuals (15%). PSVT:R scores were also compared with the amount of time per day participants made use of their spatial abilities and no statistically significant difference was found. Findings from this study suggest that a high level of spatial abilities are present among Construction Professionals. Construction education curriculum benefits from the findings that suggest drawing is an important activity to increase one’s spatial ability and should remain in CM program curriculum.

ABSTRACT The United States’ (U.S.) construction industry is experiencing a labor shortage. Within construction, the most severe worker scarcities are in building trade occupations. In the U.S., though women represent just under half of employed adults, they consist of approximately 3% of trades workers. Thus, increasing women’s participation in building trade occupations is one method of addressing workforce needs. A case study methodology examined qualitative data from in-depth interviews highlighting women’s entry into the building trades. Findings indicate one key element used to bring more women into trades occupations are trainings referred to as pre-apprenticeship programs. Examination of existing pre-apprenticeship programs within the framework of adult educational theory suggests programs use numerous methods of introducing and training women workers to enter the trades that align with education practices allowing for a changing of perspective and enhanced cultural understanding matching transformative learning methodologies. Conclusions suggest practices honed through decades of work in pre-apprenticeship program procedures could be better supported by unions, contractors, and non-profit organizations to increase the numbers and retention of tradeswomen and, thus, support the worker needs of the overall industry.

ABSTRACT An Information Manager (IM) has an exclusive and unique role to play in a project. Yet, the competencies expected of an IM have not been adequately defined. The other professionals in the construction industry define this role in their own way ignoring the industry needs. Thus, this study aimed to define the competencies expected of an IM. To achieve this, the tasks expected of an IM were first determined through a desk study using BIM guidelines. Secondly, an informal public opinion study was carried out using online data sources. The collected data were then analyzed using NVIVO software to outline the competencies required of an IM for each task. Finally, an expert interview survey was carried out to validate the outcomes of the study. The findings revealed that an IM must be a construction professional well-versed in construction technology and contract administration and that the IM must be competent in using Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows/software. The study contributes to knowledge by identifying the gap that currently exists between industry needs and the performance of professionals working as IMs, which would be invaluable when designing a curriculum for a course on information management within a BIM environment.

ABSTRACT Psychological ill-health conditions have become prominent among construction employees. This study aims to identify construction work-related factors that are likely to expose construction employees to psychological ill-health conditions. To achieve this aim mixed-methods approach was adopted, with the methods of qualitative focus group study first employed to derive unique findings from the experiences, perceptions, and opinions of the research participants. A 42-inventory scale on construction work-related psychological risk factors was developed from the 16 focus group discussions held in Ghana. A comparative survey with 300 construction professionals and construction trade workers was then conducted in Ghana to confirm the findings from the qualitative study and to determine the critical risk factors. The most critical factors ranked by the construction professionals and construction trade workers were tight deadline pressures, and abusive/over-demanding supervision, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis employed revealed seven constructs of the 42 construction work-related risk factors, namely: high task demands, high role demands, poor relationships, poor work conditions, lack of autonomy, lack of feedback, and unfair treatments. Further analysis also revealed a positive correlation between all the factors and psychological health indicators. This study provides valuable insight into the development of preventive psychological health interventions for the construction industry globally.

ABSTRACT Research shows that undergraduate construction students suffer from burnout and stress due to balancing study and employment in the construction industry. It is hypothesized that graduate construction students experience worse psychological symptoms because of other commitments that they have on top of their work and study. However, research on their mental health is still scarce. This research identifies the stressors and assesses the mental health symptoms of graduate students pursuing construction-related coursework degrees in Australia. In total, 107 valid responses were collected from graduate construction students enrolled in Australian universities through a questionnaire survey. Data analysis suggests that high self-expectations and worrying about under-performing in studies are the most frequent stressors faced by them. They also encounter higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress than the general population. Furthermore, their level of depression is higher than construction professionals in Australia. These adversely affect their academic, work, and social performances. To reduce the attrition rate of graduate students caused by poor psychological health, universities should remodel the delivery methods with balanced online and face-to-face learning activities or intensive options; set the maximum academic load of two subjects per session for students working full-time; and provide in-house educational counselling services.

ABSTRACT If disputes are not resolved promptly, they tend to become prolonged and escalated, creating a more complicated and less manageable scenario. Therefore, inappropriate dispute resolution methods would jeopardize a project’s success. In this research, performance of Iran’s standard construction form for settling disputes is explored. Findings address the need for revising the form, thereby contributing to the effective resolution of disputes. The concurrent triangulation (mixed methods) strategy was used to conduct the investigation. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 30 experts, and quantitative data were collected using questionnaires with 112 experts. Findings of this study show that there are three dispute resolution methods associated with use of the construction standard form in Iran: submitting an inquiry to the Management and Planning Organization (MPO), expert decision and referring a case to the Technical Supreme Council (TSC) for arbitration. Of these, the expert decision method is not applicable because it is not accompanied by the required executive instructions, and TSC arbitration is time-consuming. Thus, submitting an inquiry to the MPO is the only recommended option.

ABSTRACT Succession planning serves to develop and retain workers at all levels of employment. Retaining high performers is critical to a contractor’s success. The nature of the construction industry creates unique difficulties for retaining employees internally. High turnover is common within construction companies, noticeably with high performers. Currently, the industry is experiencing a significant workforce shortage and it is becoming increasingly harder to find qualified workers. To help reduce contractor’s risk of high turnover, the Construction Industry Institute (CII) appointed a research panel to identify best practices for succession planning in the construction industry. CII identified 10 Human Resource (HR) executives from large North American construction companies to participate in the research panel. With the aim of identifying best practices in succession planning, the researcher conducted a three-round Delphi study with the research panel. The panel came to a consensus on 15 practices that have the highest value for succession planning in the construction industry. During the three rounds, the panel ordered the 15 practices in perceived value by using their 212 years of combined HR experience in the construction industry. Construction companies can incorporate the practices during the five common stages of succession planning.

ABSTRACT The application of a ‘knowledge-based economy’, which is a mainstream theory in many sectors, is rarely visible in the construction industry, especially in developing countries. Accordingly, the negative consequence of weak academic-industry interactions has created many hindrances to the development of the construction sector. Hence, it is essential to lead the construction industry toward innovations through research-informed management practices, which urges for strong academic-industry assimilation. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for research-driven construction management innovations. A comprehensive literature review was carried out first and empirical data were collected from the Sri Lankan context using the mixed-research approach informed by a pragmatist philosophical stance. The perspectives of academia and industry were deductively obtained through questionnaires and inductively explored through semi-structured interviews. The findings were accumulated to a model and validated externally through expert interviews. The Model of CSFs for Research-driven Innovations (MRI) in construction management practices displays the CSFs stage-wise, concerning the actionable stakeholders. The research confirms the academic research’s potential to foster innovations in construction management practices if righteously initiated inside the innovation space, executed properly, and disseminated strategically.
