Investigating the effect of sidewalk flooring on the behavioral pattern (walking) of citizens in urban spaces (Case Study: Vali asr St., Tehran) 调查人行道地板对城市空间中市民行为模式(步行)的影响(以德黑兰Vali asr街为例)

Article history Received: 12 November 2020 Accepted: 2 December 2020 Published Online: 30 December 2020 The present study has evaluated the effect of architectural forms on the walking activity of citizens as a behavioral model in urban physical spaces. The research hypothesis claims that by designing purposeful and appropriate architectural forms, the behavior and actions of users in urban physical spaces can be to some extent, it designed or controlled, and that the pattern and domains of human behavior in urban streets are the result of the components of environmental quality that are included in the design of that street. The present theoretical proposition has been tested in two sequences from Valiasr Street in Tehran. At the theoretical level, the research method is descriptive-analytical and at the experimental level, it is a survey that has been done using the behavioral research method. The results show that the floor form and street form are the most influential architectural forms in urban physical spaces on the activity of users walking from space in the study sample. Also, some environmental factors have a direct effect on human reactions; The research findings show that people’s speed is directly related to the dimensions of sidewalk carpets and a person tries to take a step according to the senses he receives from the sidewalk flooring form and as a result his speed changes according to those forms.

Lean Construction in a Real Estate Project – A Case Study 房地产项目精益建设案例研究

Article history Received: 12 November 2020 Accepted: 14 December 2020 Published Online: 30 December 2020 Majority of all the construction projects experience cost and time overruns for reasons which are many times beyond the control of stakeholders. To overcome the same, the concept of lean integrated project delivery came into existence. Lean culture focuses on customer by empowering employees. It involves in converting waste into value by reducing waste, improving communication, and promoting teamwork integration through a common set of tools and techniques. Aim of lean construction is to achieve the affordable cost with optimum utilization of man, material and machinery. Wastes in construction industry which do not add value are supply in excess materials in inventory for raw material, work in progress, finished goods etc. Waiting for preceding activity, over processing and defects can be reduced through lean construction. This paper deals with lean construction techniques for identifying the waste in a construction project and eliminating the same.. In this project estimation of a building is done to find cost of the project with respect to specifications and compared the traditional methods visa vis and lean construction techniques which can bring down the cost and with substantial improvement in quality aimed at satisfying the customer.

Lessons Learned on Selecting the Best Mass Housing Method Based on Performance Evaluation Criteria in Iran 基于绩效评价标准在伊朗选择最佳大众住宅方法的经验教训

ABSTRACT Choosing the most appropriate construction method is an important decision with a significant effect on the performance of mass housing (MH) projects throughout their life cycle. The experience obtained from MH projects by which a massive number of residential units have been built can provide valuable lessons learned for the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to measure the appropriateness of MH methods based on the performance evaluation (PE) criteria with emphasis on the acquired experience in Iran. A comprehensive review of the literature identified five popular MH methods and 15 most crucial PE criteria affecting the MH method selection. A survey study using questionnaires, distributed among 250 Iranian experts involved in MH projects throughout the world, was conducted to examine the responsiveness of the MH methods to these criteria. The obtained results show that the tunnel formworks and the light steel framing system are the most appropriate methods to meet the identified criteria. Also, the criteria in the cost category play the most critical role in MH method selection. The transferred experience through the findings of this study can assist decision-makers who are planning for MH construction projects and choosing the right method according to their priorities.

A Cross-Sectional Study Exploring IJCER Impact in Construction Scholarship 探讨IJCER对建筑学术影响的横断面研究

ABSTRACT The International Journal of Construction Education and Research (IJCER) is an academic peer-reviewed journal supported by the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC), publishing scholarly work associated with construction education and research. The purpose of this paper is to explore the increasing academic impact of the IJCER over the first 15 years of publication. This research included three principal objectives: first, evaluating the state of the IJCER with regard to commonly used academic impact metrics; second, defining the community of scholars IJCER most commonly associates with; and third, evaluating the role that the IJCER serves as a publication resource. This research demonstrated that the IJCER has become more comparable with top tiered construction management related journals based on academic impact metrics. The research further indicated that there is a large body of researchers that regularly contribute to ASC publications, including scholars from both research and non-research based institutions. The journal can continue to strengthen the academic impact by expanding collaborative efforts, establishing more external clustering relationships and visibility outside of the ASC, and ascertaining more of an international presence within the greater community of construction scholars. Ultimately, this research can be used help guide the future of the IJCER.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Senior-Level Construction Managers: A U.S. Industry-Based Delphi Study 高级建筑经理的知识、技能和能力:基于美国行业的德尔菲研究

ABSTRACT To address the many issues in ever-evolving construction industry, senior-level managers need to gain specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be successful. Much of the current literature in construction is focused on identifying the skill sets at the Project Management level. Recognizing that limited research had been reported identifying the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required for senior-level construction managers, the current research was undertaken. The study uses the Delphi method to identify the KSAs. Purposeful sampling was used to identify a sufficient participant level. A three-phase Delphi survey questionnaire was distributed to the participants. Participants selected for the study were construction executives, construction mid-level managers, and external industry members such as Certified Public Accountants, bankers, sureties, and insurance professionals. The KSA’s, which met the consensus criteria were discussed. The KSA’s inform the graduate education programs in construction to foster the topics related to the identified KSAs in their curriculum.

Rutting Resistance of Asphalt Pavement Mixes by Finite Element Modelling and Optimisation 沥青混合料抗车辙性能有限元建模与优化

Asphalt pavement rutting is a major safety concern and is one of the main distress modes of asphalt pavement. Research into asphalt pavement mixes that provide strong resistance for rutting is considered of great significance as it can help provide extended pavement life and significant cost savings in pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. The objectives of this study are to develop numerical models to investigate the rutting of asphalt concrete pavements and to find optimal design of asphalt pavement mix for rutting resistance. Three-dimensional Finite Element models were first developed to simulate both the axial compression and wheel track testing in which a visco-elastic-plastic material model was used to predict the rutting of the asphalt concrete pavements. A strain hardening creep model with the material parameters developed from experimental testing was employed to model the time-dependent characteristics of the asphalt concrete pavements. The results were validated against the previous experimental wheel track test results of different pavement mixes. Finally, optimisation techniques using the Design Of Experiments method were applied to the simulation rutting results by varying creep parameters to identify their effects on rutting resistance in order to obtain an optimal asphalt pavements mixes. The results of this paper clearly demonstrate an efficient and effective experimental-numerical method and tool set towards optimal design for asphalt concrete pavements for rutting resistance.

Time and Cost Planning of a Housing Construction Project Using Building Information Modelling 基于建筑信息模型的住房建设项目时间和成本规划

Building information modelling (BIM) creates a platform where all the information of every single element of the construction process can be virtually integrated. The integration of 3D elements of a building model with its scheduled time and cost parameters results in 5D BIM. This feature enables the visualization, scheduling, planning, and monitoring and clash detection of all preconstruction, construction and post-construction processes of a building. The present study used the information of a live project of a traditionally built residential building which was remodeled using 5D BIM technique. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyses the impact of 5D BIM on time and cost parameters of the live project.

ABSTRACT Construction project costs frequently deviate from their estimated costs. Cost controlling techniques/tools (CCTTs) can be used to monitor these deviations. However, the effectiveness of these techniques and tools has to be evaluated. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of CCTTs used in Asian, Middle Eastern, and European construction projects. The study included a series of interviews with 15 experts to categorize the techniques and tools and identify their KPIs. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 300 chartered quantity surveyors to evaluate the level of significance of each CCTT and its KPIs. The highest number of CCTTs is implemented in the execution stage, while only few CCTTs are implemented in the initiation stage. The most significant technique used in the initiation stage is the ‘preliminary project estimate,’ and its most significant KPI is the ‘cost per functional unit.’ ‘Contract management’ is the most important technique used in the execution stage. ‘Final accounts’ with ‘effective contract sum’ as the KPI is the principle technique used in the closing stage.

Effects of Lizardite Addition on Technological Properties of Forsterite-Monticellite Rich White Ceramics Prepared From Natural Magnesite and Dolomite 天然菱镁矿和白云石制备富菱镁矿-蒙蒂石白陶瓷工艺性能的影响

Lizardite rich peridotite has never been used to prepare ceramic specimens, especially in Morocco. For this raison, potential use of naturally abundant lazirditic material from the Rif domain (NW morocco), as a supply for ceramic industry, has been evaluated. The effects of lizardite addition to magnesite and dolomite mixtures on the thermomechanical properties of the calcined ceramics were also detailed. To achieve this target, natural lizardite, magnesite and dolomite samples were collected in ultrabasic Beni Bousra massif. Those raw samples were used for the synthesis of a forsterite-monticellite rich ceramics. Both raw and sintered samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Main physical and mechanical properties were assessed and correlated to their respective microstructural changes. The obtained results showed that both magnesite and dolomite were mainly composed of MgCO3 and CaCO3. In contrast, lizardite sample showed high amounts of silica, magnesia and iron oxide. Technological tests indicated that the prepared mixtures had increased flexural strengths. An increased amount of lizardite in the initial mixtures enhanced mechanical properties of the prepared ceramic specimens. The same data showed that lizardite has led to a decrease in linear shrinkage during calcination and subsequently, the production of ceramics with the required technological properties. Thus, the preparation of lizardite-based ceramics from the raw material deposits of the Rif area, Morocco, is technically feasible, economically justifiable and socially desirable due to the contribution to the economic growth of the raw materials sector, especially ceramic industry.

Latent Institutional Environment Factors Influencing Construction Digitalization in South Africa 影响南非建筑数字化的潜在制度环境因素

ABSTRACT This paper presents the findings of an assessment of the latent institutional environment factors influencing construction digitalization using South Africa as a point of reference. The study employed a post-positivism philosophical stance which informed the use of a quantitative survey approach. The survey was conducted among construction professionals actively involved in construction projects across the country. Analysis of the data gathered was done using mean item score, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). EFA revealed two principal external environment factors (legislation and regulation, and pressure from clients and competitors) that can influence construction digitalization. Further to this, SEM revealed that while the pressure from client and competitors will have a more significant influence on digitalization, the pressure from industry regulations and government legislation cannot be overlooked. The findings of the study can be used as a guide toward the digitalization of construction organizations through the consciousness of the influence of external environmental issues, an aspect that has not gained significant recognition in the construction digitalization discourse.
