Abstract : The amplitude and phase are calculated for oblique propagation across a coastline with a sloping beach. In this case, the land and sea are taken to be plane surfaces and the beach slope is constant. It is shown that the reflected wave may be quite significant and it has a fundamentally different character from the reflected wave in the case of a flat-lying coastline. (Author)

Abstract : An experimental investigation is described on the influence of ground inhomogeneities on the reception of skywave signals, especially the influence of the conductivity contrast near a coastline. This gives rise to a rapid decrease in field-strength near the coastline as is well known from groundwave mixed-path theory. Comparison with theory is given. Influence of diffuse reflection from the ionosphere is also considered.
