The Dance and Movement Work of Jennifer Pike Cobbing: Economies of Effort and Vitality Dynamics

Jennifer Pike (1920-2016) was a majorartist whose practice traversed the disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, photography, jewellery-making, poetry andperformance. Although a fuller appreciation of the scale and range of herachievements has been recently enabled by the making of a film about her lifeand work by Holly Antrum (Catalogue,2013) and the publication of two volumes of selected works by Veer books (The Conglomerization of Wot and Scrunch, both 2010), her work has stillyet to be the subject of extended academic consideration. One aspect of Pike’spractice which is of particular interest to my larger project of examining therelationships between poetry and movement (2011, 2012, 2013), is her dance andmovement work which was often conducted in the context of collaborativeperformance with sound and visual poet Bob Cobbing and musicians such as VeryanWeston, Lol Coxhill and Hugh Metcalfe. This article introduces this aspect ofPike’s practice and offers some theoretical framing from Dee Reynolds’ work oneconomies of effort (2007) and Daniel Stern’s work on vitality dynamics (2010)before analysing recordings of performances in 2002 and 2007.

Prac Crip

This article develops what I call ‘prac crip’ as an innovative methodology to perform on the page the scholarly realities of working, living and writing with the disability of repetitive strain injury. Prac crip is a prac crit of crips that complicates liberatory crip criticism. It shows how repetitive strain injury changes an approach to practical criticism, but also, by association with ‘crit’, how practices of practical criticism with repetitive strain injury shift some key uses of the ‘crip’. Critical of this mode of cripping as well as cripical, prac crip demonstrates the emancipatory limits of practising crip criticism for those crips the work also hurts in the act.Peter Larkin’s fascination with gleaning runs parallel to the rise of lean. To glean and its derivatives have a ‘distinctive presence’ in his lexis from Pastoral Advert (1988) to Seven Leaf Sermons (2018), a thirty-year period during which lean management has become increasingly global. The article traces through Larkin the eco-politically crucial relationships between the common right of gathering after harvest known as gleaning, historically, a practice for disabled people; the gesture of leaning; and the genealogy of global lean management technologies in the packing of lean meat. The essay explores how disability is an integral part of how its readings are produced, as well as addressing the predicament that work-related upper limb disorders, which are driven by lean managed environments, continue to be driven by writing against lean managed environments.

Conference Report: Therapy & Experimental Poetry Symposium, Birkbeck, University of London, 28th September 2019
IF 0.1 Q3 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2020-12-02 DOI: 10.16995/bip.3179

During and following the symposium the concepts of ‘therapy’ and ‘experimental poetry’ were sites for questioning and exploration. Months into the Covid-19 pandemic the practises of therapy and experimental poetry as sites of interpersonal relationships which make these practices possible are emphasised. Relationships and their distance or absence are pressure points registering the micro and macro individual and societal challenges Covid-19 has forced into focus, even for those who previously turned away from the challenges of social injustices. If therapy and experimental poetry, therapies and poetries, arise in the crucible of relationships, what is happening to these relationships during this pandemic? At the Therapy and Experimental Poetry Symposium in September 2019, Scott Thurston advanced the argument that experimental poetries are a political subculture. How are these politics enacted towards each other during the unfolding societal consequences of Covid-19? The questions and ideas circulating before and after this symposium are magnified by global attention focusing on how the politics of care are enacted not only for ourselves but also for each other.
