ABSTRACT This is a paper about a possible philology. To help envisage it, I draw on three recent books which between them speak of two kinds of readerly love: love of the word, and love of literature; I examine the interplay between these two ways of loving written texts, together with the effects of subjectivity and coercion that they generate and the future they imagine for the love of the word.

‘Why Read Literature?’: Appeasing the Appetite for Play “为什么要读文学?”:增加游戏欲望

ABSTRACT This article begins by questioning the ethical turn in literary studies (Hillis Miller, Attridge) and suggests that this redirection has tended to downplay the importance of what Friedrich Schiller had labelled ‘the play-drive’ (Spieltrieb). Drawing on neuroscientist Jaak Panskepp's findings concerning the primacy of the play instincts, the article focuses on Wolfgang Iser's ‘literary anthropology’ and a theory of reading that can describe games played by authors and readers in what, following Freud, may be called a ‘playground’ (Tummelplatz). Iser's concepts ‘the fictive’ and ‘the imaginary’ are then placed alongside traditional concepts from play theory to explore an extract from Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye in which the protagonist plays with and dismembers a doll. This analysis appropriates, in particular, Iser's ideas in order to highlight the fundamentally playful nature of our engagement with literature.

Postcolonial National Space in Meena Alexander's Nampally Road Meena Alexander的Nampally路中的后殖民国家空间

ABSTRACT This paper offers a reading of Meena Alexander’s Nampally Road (NR) (1991) in the light of Homi K. Bhabha’s theorisation of the relation between nation and narration. For Bhabha, the nation is narrated through narratives which are unstable and inconsistent. These narratives, based on the past or established regularly in the present, are relentlessly refashioned. Negotiating the questions of personal and national identity, Meena Alexander’s novel delineates a post-independence Indian society, dominated by an ‘imagined’ political narrative. Throughout the novel, the protagonist’s observations of the nation and its cultural bases lead her to a redefinition of her national self. Furthermore, the novel exorcises Indian history from the shadows of colonial narratives and reconstructs an alternative postcolonial account. The marginalised female voices, resisting victimisation through their search for self-reconciliation in the interstices of memory and culture, empower a new discourse of the nation in the hybrid realm of culture. NR, it is argued, offers an image of national consciousness as achieved by undermining the hegemony of the past and the tyranny of the present. It tries to give voice to the subaltern by imaginatively and socially engaging them in the national, political, cultural and social narratives of their nation.

Don't Mention the War!: Geography, Saracens and King Horn's ‘Diplomatic’ Poet

ABSTRACT Scholarship of the Middle English King Horn (c. 1250–1290) has grappled inconclusively with its obscure toponyms Westernesse and Suddene and with identification of its nebulous Saracen antagonists. Recent work on the literary impact of the historical crises of the Norman Conquest and the Crusades may offer fresh resolution, positing that thirteenth-century romances responded to contemporary realpolitik both by avoidance of taboo issues – here Edward's difficulties in Wales and Scotland, by apposite reference to Havelok the Dane, also in MS Laud Misc. 108 – as well as by fostering a national narrative of identity including the Normans, here evinced in the accentuation of difference between nascent Englishness and the foreign otherness of the Saracens. Thus, a more generative hypothesis is that the text's place names and antagonists may be strategically vague, and analysis of other analogues of the Horn story suggests that detail is ambiguated rather than lost. This interpretation may catalyse a new reading of the poem where imprecision serves political as well as stylistic exigencies.

Re-framing Vulnerability and Wound Ethics: Colm Tóibín’s The Testament of Mary

ABSTRACT In keeping with the current ethical turn in humanities, this paper analyses Colm Tóibín’s The Testament of Mary as a literary testimony of post-Levinasian relationality. Such relationality – whereby the One and the Other both meet, ‘emasculate’ and give meaning to each other – draws on vulnerability. That is, the novella shows that to be human is to be exposed and vulnerable to the Other. This is not necessarily negative because such exposure relies on the ethics of care that Mary performs particularly with her neighbour Farina, her cousin Mary, Jesus and Lazarus. Indeed, the wounds both men suffer are not only traumatic symptoms, but also relational meeting points. Hence, the article proves that wound ethics (vulnerability being the etymological root of the wound) is recast into interpersonal care to re-present the encounter with the Other.

‘Is There Anybody There?’: Solitude and the Hermeneutics of Love in the Writings of Walter de la Mare “那里有人吗?”:沃尔特·德·拉·马雷作品中的孤独与爱的解释学

ABSTRACT Solitude and a striving to communicate are major themes in the poetry of Walter de la Mare. While best known for his verse and fiction, de la Mare also produced a series of unconventional anthological works which contain explicit treatments of those themes which are only implicit in his creative work. Drawing on the insights found in these anthologies, this paper argues that, for de la Mare, solitude – along with its opposite state, connectedness – form the endpoints of an axis of concern that is present throughout his body of work. His poetry can be read as an exploration of the infinitely varying degrees of solitude and connection that exist between these two absolute states, manifesting as the possibility of communication held indefinitely in abeyance. Furthermore, in a critical essay on the discourse of love, contained in his 1943 anthological work Love, de la Mare links the themes of solitude, connectedness, and the attendant possibilities of communication, to his deep concern with the problems of language. In doing so, he foreshadows the work of later critics concerning absence and presence in literature, and the possibility of language and meaning in the absence of an addressee, doing so at a time when much of the critical consensus took the communicative efficacy of language for granted.

What Makes a Modernist Short Story a Story?: The Case of Katherine Mansfield’s ‘At “Lehmann’s”’

ABSTRACT Allan Pasco has noted the relative paucity of critical attempts to define the short story as a genre. Most critics, he suggests, ‘insist upon the story, for the causally and chronologically constructed narrative is generally viewed as central.’ One means of moving beyond causation and chronology, we argue, is by recourse to the concept of the plot genotype, first elaborated by Vladimir Propp in his analysis of the Russian fairy tale. In this essay, we show how a refined Proppian morphology can be used to interpret Katherine Mansfield’s story ‘At “Lehmann’s”’ (1910). In doing so, we offer a model that is capable of accounting for short literary fictions, specifically modernist ones, that critics have tended to regard as ‘plotless.’

In doing so, we offer a model that is capable of accounting for short literary fictions, specifically modernist ones, that critics have tended to regard as ‘plotless.’","PeriodicalId":40530,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language Literature and Culture","volume":"64 1","pages":"151 - 166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20512856.2017.1402457","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43196199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Tilism-e-Hoshruba is a part of Dastan-e-Amir Hamza, which has entertained audiences in different parts of South Asia for many centuries. Despite its transregional appeal, Tilism-e-Hoshruba is little known in the West. The first English translation appeared as late as 2009, introducing it to the English-speaking world. However, Tilism-e-Hoshruba's new found accessibility does not recompense the lack of scholarly research on it. Most discussions about it have focused exclusively on its genre, ignoring the complex interplay of gender and religion that it offers. To curtail this surprising lack of attention, this paper focuses on the text's religious and gender binary by interrogating the symbolic status and narrative function of Amar Ayyar, an ayyar who deconstructs religious ideas in the guise of humor and playful performativity. Through the figure of Amar Ayyar, this paper contests the stereotypical assumptions (both Eastern and Western) about the fixity of religious and gender boundaries in Indo-Islamicate cultures in addition to challenging the hegemonic appropriation of Islamic discourse by religio-patriarchal structures in the modern era. By constantly questioning, de-centering, and challenging religious and gender values, this paper highlights the ways in which Amar opens interesting spaces for subversion.
