This essay explores the cross-cultural interplay between North American mission boards and emerging Latin American voices in the conceptualization of Latin America as a mission field. The essay also argues for the recognition of Latin America and the Caribbean in the study of world Christianity beyond the typical recognition of liberation theology and revolutionary movements.

The Fourteenth International Conference of the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network was held from June 22 to June 25, 2022. My summary of the conference was written from the perspective of a historian writing within the discipline of world Christianity with an interest in the exchanges between Christians of the global South as well as the impact of Christianity of the global South on its counterpart in the global North. The conference was held in Puerto Rico, recognized as “the oldest colony” in the world and the “original” land of the Taino people.

This article will explore the impact of the changing world order on global religion. Specifically, it will analyze the challenges and opportunities that the upcoming post-American world order will have on Mormonism, which has been described as the quintessential American religion. In doing so the article will answer the question: How can an America-centric church become a global faith in a post-American world? This will be accomplished by looking at Mormon theology, as well as policy and practice of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including recent challenges it has had in Russia. By merging literature from international relations and religious studies, this article will be able to better understand the interplay between the changing world order and the abilities of global religions to operate within them. As the world order changes, global faiths will have to change as well. For Mormonism, these changes are daunting but not impossible, and they are already taking place.

The Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in June 2022 to discuss the issue of “decolonizing churches” from ecumenical, intercultural, and interdisciplinary perspectives. And, although the place was chosen for a number of reasons, one of the main ones was that the Caribbean context and especially the island of Puerto Rico contributed to further problematize the colonize-decolonize binomial within ecclesial and theological coordinates. This article captures the main insights gained throughout the whole academic meeting as well as the stumbling blocks for decolonizing churches and the challenges that ecumenical theology faces.

As urgently needed as decolonial theory, theology, psychology, and ecclesiology are in the churches that have had their lives and history constrained (or indeed their ecclesial formations given birth) by colonial power and knowledge relations, they are just as urgently needed in the churches that continue to benefit from those relations. The churches of the global North, and particularly those that have been the allies and moral architects of colonial extraction and assimilation projects, the churches whose histories bear out a flow of knowledge and authority from center to periphery and a flow of economic and cultural production from periphery to center, are thereby diminished and distorted in ways that require painstaking decolonial analysis and constructive reorientation to rectify.
