Abstract:The 2014 horror film Ich seh, ich seh [Goodnight Mommy], directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, employs a range of uncanny archetypes, from the mother as bandaged mummy to the doubling of the twin sons. Set in a rural landscape suffused with religion and death, it presents the unsettling of a domestic environment and unspoken questions about guilt and the past. This article analyses the film through the work of key theorists such as Freud, Rank and Jentsch, putting it also into the wider context of Austrian post-war history. Ultimately the film blurs the distinction between fiction and reality, questioning whether what is seen can be believed.

Abstract:The endless debate about the 'Austrian' quality of Austrian literature is here reduced to some of its illustrative names, since names are themselves brief illustrations of geographical, social and cultural contexts. Hence literary naming is a criterion of difference. In theory, the name is considered completely arbitrary, yet also as a 'significant' part of the personality; the literary code, of course, endows it with deeper meaning. Seen historically, literary names can affirm or criticize dynastic, national or religious conceptions. For satire, 'speaking' names are particularly rewarding. As 'real' names, they can refer directly to contemporary figures. Intertextually, literary names establish links to great predecessors and anticipate the abolition of the onomastic division between the sexes.

Abstract:This article surveys the multi-faceted career of Max Pirker (1886-1931), who made it his life's work to promote stronger cultural ties between Vienna and Austria's Alpine provinces, especially his native Carinthia. Greatly influenced by Josef Nadler's ethnographic approach to literature, he not only made a significant contribution to Viennese theatre history but also enjoyed productive friendships with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and his circle and with key members of the Carinthian cultural elite. After playing an important propagandist role during the Carinthian 'Resistance Struggle' (1918-19), Pirker increasingly rejected the Austrian state in the 1920s and embraced German nationalist rhetoric, but without turning against Vienna in the process.

Abstract:Drawing on material in the newly published supplementary volumes (2007) of the Nestroy edition (HKA), the article argues that scepticism towards scholarship and advances in knowledge cannot be reduced to a biographical explanation (Nestroy's education and family background), nor to the traditional opposition between 'popular' theatre and high culture: he followed with scepticism press reports of technological progress and of scholarly controversy, and his characters are aware of the limitations of knowledge, but Vincenz's scorn for study in "Die beiden Herrn Söhne" is an extreme case. In general his satire shows respect for learning and for culture, while testing them against ideals of truth and authenticity.
