Abstract:Thanks to "Anatol" and "Dalliance", Arthur Schnitzler made a name for himself in France around 1900, but "Round Dance" remained virtually unknown until the film adaptation by Max Ophuls. It took a new translation in 1987 to bring "Round Dance" into vogue in the theatre and arouse the interest of French audiences. Since then there have been a considerable number of very different French-language productions. On the one hand, this diversity offers an interesting insight into French responses to the Viennese writer, especially in the contemporary theatre world; on the other hand, these productions illustrate the range of directorial approaches to a translated text and the difficulties of cultural transfer within the theatre. Obwohl Arthur Schnitzler um die Jahrhundertwende in Frankreich über "Anatol" und "Liebelei" rasch berühmt wurde, blieb "Reigen" bis Max Ophuls Filmadaption fast unbekannt. Nach diesem Erfolg aber musste man auf die Neuübersetzung des "Reigens" 1987 warten, die eine Welle von Aufführungen und das Interesse des französischen Publikums auslöste. Die französischen Inszenierungen sind zahlreich und vielfältig, was einerseits ein spannendes Bild der Beziehungen Frankreichs zum Wiener Autor und ihre Entwicklung in der zeitgenössischen Theaterwelt liefert. Andrerseits jedoch veranschaulichen diese Aufführungen den unterschiedlichen Zugang eines Regisseurs zu einem übersetzten Text und die Schwierigkeiten des kulturellen Transfers beim Theater.
