Most of the recent work on distributed multimedia systems has concentrated on the transmission, synchronization and operating system support for continuous media data streams. We consider the integrated control of remote multimedia devices, such as cameras, speakers and microphones, to be an important part of a distributed multimedia system. In this paper we describe MCAM, an application layer architecture, service and protocol for Movie Control, Access, and Management in a computer network. The OSI Reference Model is our framework. We present the protocol data units and the Finite State Machine for our application protocol and outline the automatic generation of the implementation code for layer 7 from our formal specification. MCAM allows complete and integrated control of movie data streams and devices in a heterogeneous multimedia network.

High-quality multimedia conferencing through a long-haul packet network

Desktop multimedia may be just the first step toward longdistance multimedia collaboration. This paper describes both the challenges and the opportunities of transmitting high-fidelity multimedia data streams though long distance packet networks, in the context of practical experience with a worldwide videoconference system that operates over a new internet with realtime transmission capabilities. This system conveys full-motion color images and sound at nearVCR quality and is currently in use both as a research testbed and as a production videoconferencing system. It is also designed to support less common shared media such as realtime simulations or digitized maps. Its implementation incorporates a number of unusual features including the adaptation of commercial codecs to a packetized network, use of the ST-II network protocol for bandwidth reservation and multicasting, an experimental media negotiation scheme, and a new “sticky” conference control protocol designed to minimize the effects of transient network failures and to scale up gracefully to large conferences.

A publisher of business and financial news and a regional telephone service provider are developing the means to produce, distribute, and retrieve multimedia news over wideband information networks. The goal is to deliver business news ondemand to corporate and financial services professionals in nearreal-time using advanced network-based multimedia services. The new requirements of this application led to the creation of the following prototypes: a multimedia news programming format for live and stored information; a system concept for network-based multimedia information services; a flexible information structure to support composition, linkage, reuse, indexing, versioning, access control, and presentation control for live and stored multimedia; a groupware authoring system for audio-video capture, editing, indexing, and publishing; a digital information network with dynamically allocated stream and packet channels; a network-based multimedia store-and-forward service to provide notification, controlled distribution, access via authorizations, and database search and retrieval; a multimedia local area distribution system; and a user interface for browsing, search, notification and retrieval, with automatic hyper-linking to associated information and non-linear view/playback of audio-video material. The prototypes make efficient use of available multimedia and communications technologies, and are intended to exploit future network and media products as they become available. The resulting system serves as a high-performance testbed to study user requirements, to evaluate new technologies, to probe market needs, and to develop new multimedia service concepts. While the current work focuses on a specific application, it is expected to provide a model for developing a wide range of multimedia applications and services.
