Among all the ritual performances following the death of an individual, specialattention is given to the corpse in almost all religions. Islamic Shari'a laws provide specific guidelines as to how to treat the corpse, including washing, drying, shrouding and burial. These practices differ from American Christian-based funeral practices of embalming and planning a memorial service through a funeral home. In the Austin (Texas) metropolitan area, there are a few options for members of the Muslim community seeking Islamic burial services for deceased individuals, including a cemetery that provides an ‘Islamic section’ where Muslims in the Austin area can practise the traditional requirements for burials. The purpose of the study reported here was to examine the resources available to those seeking an Islamic burial in this area. Through semi-structured interviews conducted with religious leaders, organizers and volunteers in Muslim communities, this research offers new and important information detailing the experience of seeking and acquiring an Islamic burial in Central Texas.

Employing Dagenais’ performative model of textual production and his notion of ethical reading, this article analyses how scribal re-inscription and intertextual references to kesik-bas (severed head) and menakibname (accounts of heroic and miraculous deeds) effectively foreground or elide the prophetic dreams and miraculous saint-like powers of an Ottoman commander in a corpus of early modern Ottoman gazavatname (campaign) manuscripts. In doing so, they demarcate very different spiritual and political geographies, and reflect a tension between a hero who reflects a more imperial state-centred vision of loyalty and one who appeals to audiences who geographically, politically or religiously are positioned on the periphery. To this end, the depiction of the prophetic and miraculous powers of the commander can be read as a commentary on the post sixteenth-century process of bureaucratization and confessionalization that took place in the Ottoman Empire.

This article explores the use of dreams and dream interpretation by teachers and disciples within a prominent Sufi order in contemporary Pakistan. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and Sufi texts, the analysis describes how Chishti Sabiri Sufis employ dreams as models for Muslim selfhood and sainthood, tools for spiritual development and markers of spiritual attainment.

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the Western Rif (Morocco), I examine three types of oneiric experiences: dreams (ahlam, manaym) and visions (ru’yan) of a prophetic nature obtained through lethargic sleep; and dream incubation (istikhara) at Sufi saints’ shrines. I argue that dreaming, dream-sharing and dream-interpretation become a significant source of power for women, as they make possible a feminine management of the dead and the dead saints’ discourses and actions.
