This article studies the interdependence between structural and pragmatic aspects of code-switches (CS) observed in the dialogic speech of the novel «Marseille Caper» by Peter Mayle. The matrix language of bilingual utterances is English and the embedded language is French. The article provides a detailed description of the classification of code-switches according to types and the functions they perform. Different types of code-switches have been identified: intersentential (44 units), intrasentential - within a phrase (insertions - 25 units, embedded language islands - 36 units), parenthetical switches - 20 units. The study has shown that the intrasentential type (81 units) is the most frequently used code-switch type in the bilingual characters’ speech. Besides, intrasentential type occurring within a simple sentence is more popular in comparison with parenthetical switches with the embedded language islands being predominant. It is argued that the most common pragmatic function in the bilingual characters’ speech is the subject-thematical one represented by the embedded language islands. It is revealed that the code-switches in the novel perform mainly subject-thematic (62 units), emotional (18 units) and emphatic (18 units) functions. The subtype of intrasentential type - parathentical switches - is represented by the greatest variety of functions (7).

The article presents the analysis of author's self-presentation means in historiographical texts. The author of a historiographical text studies scientific context of historic events and therefore acts as a historian and historiographer. The current study enabled to discover the major strategies of expressing author's intentions. Those turned out to be objectiveness, appeal to documents, detached subjectivity, explicit evaluation and argumentation strategies. Dialog strategy was in the periphery. It was found that historiographical texts show the dominants common for scientific discourse in general including a pattern of “a research analyst” who uses certain techniques of proving a hypothesis by means of elaborated logical description and reasoning. The analysis of linguistic means of expressing author's intentions enabled to reveal explicit and implicit indications of those strategies. The explicit ones included adjectives sometimes used with intensifiers; nouns; set expressions and phrases with evaluative meaning; an appeal to other scientists opinion with the abundance of quotations and references. The implicit ones contained argumentation strategies including author's comments with unfortunately rare appeal to the analyst's own research results and dialog strategies with interrogative sentences and question-answer patterns indicating them.

In this article, the example of a causative situation actualizing the modification of the emotional state is used to consider semantic variants of expressing the meaning of intensification. The study is conducted from the viewpoint of functional grammar, particularly, semantic categories of intensification, causativeness, emotiveness and their intercategorial interaction. The category of intensification reflects the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the phenomenon which may be accompanied by estimated values. As a result, intensification increase serves to increase the expressive power of the utterance. Thus, in situations with emotive causations, we observe an example of intercategorial interaction of several categories: intensification, evaluation, expressiveness. The purpose of the paper is to identify and systematize adverb intensifiers relating to the expressive means of the language and implementing the function of enhanced influence on the addressee. The object of the analysis are aspects of intercategorial interaction. The focus of the current study are adverbial intensifiers in situations with emotive causatives. Methods of contextual analysis, definition and synonyms analysis, generalizing and interpretation are used to classify adverbial intensifiers in situations with emotive causatives. It is concluded that the intercategorical interaction of these categories is a tool for purposeful influence on the addressee of the utterance.

This article examines the dependence of the metaphor power in communication and patterns of the metaphorical mapping as well as methods for quantitative analysis of metaphors in the text. Metaphor functional typology index (MfTI) is proposed and tested. This index is based on the division of metaphors into orientational, ontological and structural, which perform descriptive, identification and restructuring functions. The mathematical logic of calculating the index assumes that, based on the final numerical value, one can draw a conclusion about the predominant function played by the system of metaphorical models in the text or discourse, and, as a result, analyze the level of its speech impact. This method was tested in practice to solve two research problems: a descriptive analysis of the whole text’s metaphor power and a comparative analysis of metaphorical models with different source domains and one target domain. We analyzed the metaphorical nature of the texts of the New Year addresses of the political leaders of the Russian Federation, China and Great Britain, the public speeches of V...

Fluencyin a foreignlanguagepresupposesadvancementinvariousskills. When learning a foreign language, listening is one of the most difficult types of language practices for non-native speakers. The results of the present research based on the survey of 52 Chinese and 50 Russian L2 learners, aged 18-28 (Bachelor, Master and PhD levels) in Chelyabinsk support this viewpoint. The current paper analyzes the causes of mistakes in listening comprehension made by Chinese learners of Russian and Russian learners of Chinese. The causes can be of psychological nature (anxiety and the lack of motivation), of linguistic nature reflected on the phonetic (number of sounds, syllable tone vs lexical stress, connected speech processes), lexicographic, lexical-grammatical (the lack of vocabulary, differences of grammatical categories and syntactic sentence patterns) levels, as well as the lack of knowledge regarding cultural realities. These mistakes are a naturally expected as a result of the negative interference of the mother tongue.

This article reports the results of a contrastive study of the impact that headlines have on the image-building of Europe in mass media discourse of the USA and Great Britain. The role and functions of headlines are considered in communication and information exchange; their linguistic peculiarities are analyzed in connection with the image of Europe that they create in American and British mass media. The obtained results enables to draw the following conclusions. First, the headlines of certain largest American and British newspapers and magazines are aimed at forming the negative image of Europe. Second, the linguistic image of Europe in the American press is more vivid and emotional than that in the British one due to the fact that British journalists use much less linguistic and stylistic means than their American colleagues.

The paper focuses on the structure and content as well as linguistic and axiological aspects of students’ reflective essays on their studies at university. The research has revealed that those essays can be referred to as hybrid genre as far as they combine the features of acknowledgments, reviews and reflective essays. The addressees could be particular teachers, a particular Department of the University as a whole. The essays are an amalgam of specific evaluative meanings as well as common evaluations manifested by single lexemes, word groups or even whole utterances, with ethical and teleological evaluations being dominant among them. Students characterize positively their teachers’ contribution, their (teachers’) personal and professional characteristics. In 100% of the essays, teacher professionalism is noted to play a considerable role together with an opportunity to engage in research and conclusions concerning students’ own personal growth and professional development.
