ABSTRACT Religious leaders in Roman Catholic and Sunni Muslim communities in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi are charged with responding in an official capacity to the pressing concerns facing their respective communities both theologically and practically. However, speaking about sexuality from a religious perspective particularly on the use of condoms in AIDS prevention has been rather troublesome topic many leaders and clergy find problematic discussing openly. This paper offers a comparative analysis of Muslim and Catholic views on sexuality by establishing the parameters within which to consider the presence and activity of Catholic and Muslim leaders in Kenya and the holistic, grassroots approach in responding to the AIDS epidemic in Nairobi regarding condom use.

ABSTRACT When Sweden introduced same-sex marriage in 2009, this change in legislation was preceded by a well-organized, professional campaign of an alliance of various religious leaders. Since political support for a gender neutral marriage law was substantial and public opinion in favor, the question that is raised in this article is: what was at stake for the Christian opposition in its defiance of same-sex marriage? It is argued that through their “Protect Marriage” initiative, the marginal “free churches” confidently claimed a space for themselves in the Church of Sweden dominated religious landscape and the liberal values dominated political landscape. Paradoxically, it was precisely the overwhelmingly mocking, derogatory responses to the campaign which allowed conservative Christians to firmly position themselves in the debate.

Vasey-Saunders invokes the notion that lifelong, monogamous, heterosexual unions are the norm for men and women as sexual beings (p. 1). One might well ask in the light of Girard whether beginning with such an operative assertion only risks adding fuel to an already intense “mimetic rivalry” – both within the church, but also in the wider society. Yet, such concerns aside, this is a book that merits attention.

Given Mormon theologies around Heavenly Mother, even those in this book, are heavily invested in heterosexual marriage and reproduction, the question is whether Mormonism can offer theologies of the female deity for more than one type of idealized woman. For example, could we imagine Her as single, transgender, gay, bisexual, celibate, polyamorous or childless, and what would these images mean for Mormonism and Mormon women? As Graham-Russell emphasizes, “‘Woman’” is not a universal experience” (p. 270). If the female deity has a “woman’s body”, what does/can it look like? Set apart by its inclusion of a range of different styles and gender,Mormon Feminism proves an excellent resource for those interested in the dialog between faith and feminism. If one were to summarize this book in a word, it would be “recovery”; first, in that many contributors seek to reclaim the stories of past Mormon women, and second, in that there is in these pages the desire of healing selves and others. Although the lack of LGBT-engaged theologies is noticeable, Mormonism teaches us that perfection and knowledge are ever ongoing; thus, my sincere hope is that Mormon Feminism, with its appeal to a wider audience than purely academic works, can be one stepping stone to many more.

If not, most readers will be able to appreciate Thatcher’s initial impulse to direct theology of gender towards Christology and Trinitarianism, and his creative approach to understanding human solidarity alongside sex difference.
