PurposeThis paper reports on a workshop discussing the views of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) community on the opportunities and risks posed by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into voice output communication aid systems. The views of the community on whether a Code of Practice was needed for the use of this new technology were also sought.Design/methodology/approachThis was an explorative, qualitative study in which members of the AAC community attending a session at a UK national conference were invited to discuss the topic, responding to structured questions from the research team. The use of AI for both novel language generation and rate enhancement was discussed within the session.FindingsMany potential opportunities and benefits of AI to AAC users were discussed by the group. Risks associated with new and existing biases in AI language models were raised, as was the need to ensure that outputs generated by AI were authentically authored by users. Whilst there was broad support for the idea of a Code of Practice, questions were posed about how it would be designed and what it should contain.Originality/valueThis study presents a unique insight into the views of the AAC community on the benefits and risks of incorporating AI into AAC systems. The views of the community on the need for a Code of Practice may support how the field moves forward with this complex technology.

PurposeThe purpose of this case study is to discuss the development of a Video-Based Instruction (VBI) intervention in supporting a learner with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to independently complete a coffee preparation task in a community work setting.Design/methodology/approachThe participant was a student with ASD enrolled in a public high school transition program with work experiences. The VBI was fully developed using an iPad’s built in camera and photos app to develop a sequence of video prompts (VP) demonstrating each step of the coffee preparation task. Baseline and intervention performance data were collected with the use of a 19-step task analysis.FindingsThe VBI intervention improved the student’s independent task completion, eliminating the need for external prompts. The student used the iPad to navigate the VP clips and completed all 19 task steps without errors, demonstrating increased independence and task proficiency.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings suggest that VBI with the iPad photos app can be an effective instructional strategy for career development individuals with ASD. Future research should explore using VBI with readily accessible technology applications for tasks essential to paid employment for learners with ASD. Additionally, it should examine the involvement of relevant stakeholders in the development and implementation of VBI.Originality/valueThis study uniquely utilized the existing iPad camera and photos app to develop and deliver VBI, highlighting its potential as an accessible tool for developing individualized VBI. The use of widely available technology simplifies the implementation process and may be easily adopted in various career development contexts for learners with ASD.

PurposeThe main purpose of this paper is to discuss findings from original research conducted on barriers in work-related settings for PwID and how to detach those challenges from medical diagnoses.Design/methodology/approachData on impairments, barriers and possible solutions was collected through semi-structured interviews with PwID using an interview guide based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. The data collected was analysed using qualitative content analysis.FindingsVideocall programs, passwords, lack of social contacts or possibilities to regenerate and insufficient usability or digital skills are among the biggest barriers identified. Possible solutions include creating social opportunities, offering external structure and creating opportunities for participation.Research limitations/implicationsDue to the small number of participants the results should be seen as explorative and need to be verified further.Practical implicationsThe results made apparent, that those challenges identified can also affect people without disabilities and the offered solutions may not only help develop a more inclusive workplace but also create a healthier working environment for all kinds of people.Originality/valueThe approach appears to be a good way to separate impairments from medical diagnoses and related stigma. The impairments that were described by the interviewees do not appear disability-exclusive. It is apparent that those challenges can also affect people without disabilities and the offered solutions may not only help develop a more inclusive workplace but also create a healthier working environment for all kinds of people.

PurposeWe examined the role of technology in employment and work for people with disabilities (PWD). We intended to identify publication trends, key terms, research areas and potential gaps in the topic.Design/methodology/approachWe scrutinized relevant articles from two major databases through bibliometric and systematic review analyses. The bibliometric data involved 256 articles analysed through the VOSviewer software to produce publication trends and network maps. We then scanned article abstracts and selected 114 articles for thematic analysis using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline.FindingsThe findings revealed a dominance of authors from Western and European countries, particularly the United States of America. Three themes emerged as the crucial factors shaping technology utilization for PWD employment and workplace inclusion. These were identified as individual, environmental and societal, which shed light on the multifaceted influences surrounding PWD’s technology empowerment.Originality/valueThe hybrid review approach enables a thorough examination of the published work. Our study proposes a conceptual model for PWD employment and workplace inclusion. Founded on the theories of Work Adjustment, Human–Computer Interaction and the Social Model of Disability. The model provides a clear visualization to guide further research and relevant initiatives in this area.

We then scanned article abstracts and selected 114 articles for thematic analysis using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline.FindingsThe findings revealed a dominance of authors from Western and European countries, particularly the United States of America. Three themes emerged as the crucial factors shaping technology utilization for PWD employment and workplace inclusion. These were identified as individual, environmental and societal, which shed light on the multifaceted influences surrounding PWD’s technology empowerment.Originality/valueThe hybrid review approach enables a thorough examination of the published work. Our study proposes a conceptual model for PWD employment and workplace inclusion. Founded on the theories of Work Adjustment, Human–Computer Interaction and the Social Model of Disability. The model provides a clear visualization to guide further research and relevant initiatives in this area.","PeriodicalId":42168,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Enabling Technologies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141824918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PurposeA wide gap exists between the innovation and development of self-monitoring, analysis and reporting technology (SMART) technologies and the actual adoption by older adults or those caring for them. This paper aims to increase awareness of available technologies and describes their suitability for older adults with different needs. SMART technologies are intelligent devices and systems that enable autonomous monitoring of their status, data analysis or direct feedback provision.Design/methodology/approachThis is a scoping review of SMART technologies used and marketed to older adults or for providing care.FindingsFive categories of SMART technologies were identified: (1) wearable technologies and smart tools of daily living; (2) noninvasive/unobtrusive technology (i.e. passive technologies monitoring the environment, health and behavior); (3) complex SMART systems; (4) interactive technologies; (5) assistive and rehabilitation devices. Technologies were then linked with needs related to everyday practical tasks (mainly applications supporting autonomous, independent living), social and emotional support, health monitoring/managing and compensatory assistance rehabilitation.Research limitations/implicationsWhen developing, testing or implementing technologies for older adults, researchers should clearly identify concrete needs these technologies help meet to underscore their usefulness.Practical implicationsOlder adults and caregivers should weigh the pros and cons of different technologies and consider the key needs of older adults before investing in any tech solution.Social implicationsSMART technologies meeting older adult needs help support both independent, autonomous life for as long as possible as well as aiding in the transition to assisted or institutionalized care.Originality/valueThis is the first review to explicitly link existing SMART technologies with the concrete needs of older adults, serving as a useful guide for both older adults and caregivers in terms of available technology solutions.

PurposeThe present paper answers two significant questions: (1) What are the relative consumer and firm-level effects of marketing through metaverse compared to conventional marketing endeavors? (2) What are the current trends in utilizing the metaverse as reported in the recent literature?Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a systematic literature review methodology, utilizing a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart to synthesize existing research. Thirty-five articles written in English were selected and analyzed from two databases, Web of Science and EBSCO Host.FindingsThe findings indicate that consumer-level effects of the metaverse include consumer loyalty and brand attachment. The firm-level benefits are decentralization and cost reductions. The paper proposes a framework indicating variables that could attenuate or enhance the association between immersive components of the metaverse and their resultant effects.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding the role of metaverse in marketing practices related to the marketing mix components. The study conceptualizes a novel framework for the metaverse and its resultant effects.

PurposeThis study assessed two technology systems aimed at enabling a man with intellectual disability, blindness, deafness and motor and tactile discrimination problems to make verbal requests through simple one-hand signs.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted according to an ABAB design. During the B (intervention) phases, the man used the two systems, which included (1) nine mini recording devices fixed on the man’s clothes or wheelchair (i.e. in positions the man touched with his sign movements) and (2) nine tags with radio frequency identification codes (fixed at approximately the same positions as the mini recording devices) and a dedicated tag reader, respectively. Making a sign (i.e. touching a recording device or reaching a tag) led to the verbalization of the request related to that sign.FindingsDuring baseline, the mean frequency of signs/requests made was below 2 per session, and only some of those requests were identified/satisfied. During the intervention, the mean frequency of requests made and satisfied was about 10 per session with each of the systems.Originality/valueThe results, which are to be taken with caution given the preliminary nature of the study, seem to suggest that the systems can help translate simple signs into verbal requests.
