One of the problems of power electronics engineering is the solution of a problem of electromagnetic compatibility of converters with a network. The nonsinusoidal curve shape of a current consumption reference for the majority of modern converters of electrical energy causes distortion of a line voltage, that degrades activity of other customers, results in increase of power dissipation in wires, transformers and other load-bearing elements. The problem of formation of a sinusoidal input current can be solved, using a boosting converter. The paper describes the design of such a 2 kW converter in which one of the quasisinusoidal currents is reshaped. It is intended for use a source of stabilised constant voltage, or as a power factor corrector.

The research of tribotechnical phenomena occurring in a working area of the tool (punches of heat deforming press and cutting tool) under exploitation appears to be of great significance due to problems of its reliability and durability. These factors depend on properties of new phases which are formed in a working contact zone as a result of cyclical temperature and power effects, and also from interaction with products of tribodestruction of greasing-cooling liquids (GCL). Starting from the above, the purpose of research was the analysis of the origin of self-influence of chemical composition of the GCL. The tool reliability and durability depends on properties of chemical connections formed on working surfaces of the tool. The creation of more plastic and tear-proof chemical connections (phases) on working surface decreases chipping and wearing of the tool. Physico-chemical theory dispersion of hardening allows us to select the most effective fixed methods of chemical-thermal processing and depositions of coatings depending on conditions of activity of the tool.

The authors describe a switched-capacitor approach to battery balancing which is based on the elementary mechanism of charge redistribution, and appears to be the simplest way among all known passive and active methods. They also detail how switched-capacitor power electronic equalizers offer many advantages over other techniques.

At the problematic lab of the Seversk Technological Institute of Tomsk Polytechnic University (STI TPU) two devices are used for heavy metals testing in biological objects: an analyzer (TA-1) which uses the method of inverse voltammetry (IV), and a spectrometer (Spectroskan) which uses the method of X-ray-fluorescence analysis (XFA). Professor N.A. Rolpakova (TPU, Chemical Engineering Faculty) uses the technique of platinum (Pt) test in biological materials (blood, urine, tissue) of patients having Pt treatment by an IV method was developed. Pt is used for treatment of oncological diseases. Its molecules bind the cells of a cancerous growth. To know the concentration of this drug in the blood of an oncological patient is necessary for overseeing a course of treatment. The essence of the method is the following: the Pt from assay is transferred to solution. The solution is placed in glass for polarographic measurement. The electrodes are inserted: an operating electrode (impregnated graphite electrode) and a comparison electrode (AgCl). During a definite time (the time of electrolysis) the Pt concentrates on the surface of an electrode together with mercury, which is beforehand entered in a parsed solution (metal-activator). The current of oxidation of the metal-activator, deposited together with Pt, is proportional to the content of Pt in the parsed assay. The content of Pt is determined by a method of standard components.

In spite of significant successes in the field of lung surgery such complications of the post-operative period as failure of the bronchus stump and bronchial fistulas are still serious problems. According to the information of foreign and native authors the frequency of complications amounts to from 2 up to 30%. Resulting from this mortality amounts to 70%. In terms of treatment success the recovery of such patients' health therefore accounts for no more than 30%. This makes the life quality and social adaptation of patients worse. In the opinion of most authors the main cause of the presented complications is the character and quality of the bronchial suture. A large quantity of suggested types and modifications of bronchus stump sutures is evidence of this. The shortcoming of hand and mechanical sutures traditionally used at present is their effect on the bronchial lumen. The bronchial lumen condition ruins the protective barrier of the mucous membrane. In this connection the development of new methods of bronchus stump capsulation without the above mentioned shortcoming is supposed to be the most effective development to improve lung surgery.

High-accuracy apparatus for researching /spl epsiv/' and tg/spl delta/ of liquid and solid dielectrics over the range of 10-10/sup 7/ Hz and 10/sup 9/-10/sup 10/ Hz frequency was designed and operates in the authors' institute. Measurement assurance as two state special measurement standards of unit of inductivity E', initial means of measurement tg/spl delta/ and standard samples of relative inductivity (SS RI), spreading on this part of the frequency band were designed. Needs of science and production require necessity of frequency band extension up to 10/sup -3/-10/sup -5/ Hz towards infra-low frequencies and area of a very high frequency of range up to frequencies about 70-100 GHz. It is bound to occurrence of volumetric-charge polarization mechanism in the field of infra-low frequencies and to considerable value of a dispersion of relative inductivity in the range of 10/sup -1/-10/sup -3/ Hz.

It has been shown previously that the contribution of the effect of self-diffraction gyration may be the reason of the nonunidirectional exchange at the two wave mixing in a cubic photorefractive crystal. V.Yu. Kransoperov et al. (1999) experimentally demonstrated the polarization dependency of the two-wave coupling gain, when effective nonunidirectional energy exchange exists. But in all previous papers, the polarization dependency of the interaction effectiveness was considered. In this work, the authors show that the above-mentioned effect also leads to a rotation of polarization of the signal (weak) wave.

One of the most difficult tasks in analyzing dynamic scenes is image segmentation on the composing regions, belonging respectively to the target and the background. The segmentation occupies the special place in the operation of the video tracking systems (VTS) due to the capability of the target detection in a search mode on the one hand, and how the quality of the segmentation affects the target location measurement precision on the other. Well known approaches to the image segmentation are the pixels intensities histogram features analysis, and the edge extracting. An advantage of such an approach is its obvious simplicity, clear physical meaning of the selection threshold and small volume of the required a priori information about segmented images.

The firing in furnaces of modern high-power steam generators results in formation and atmospheric emission of a plenty of parasitic toxic substances, in particular nitric oxides (NO/sub x/) and sulphur dioxide (SO/sub 2/). In this connection the consideration of possibility of using effective and rather cheap ways of flue gas treating is actual.
