ABSTRACT This article traces the pathway of Ann Loades’ important relationship with feminist thinking as it impacted on her understanding of Christian theology. Starting from Searching for Lost Coins (1987) – based on the Scott Holland lectures she delivered in 1986 – it considers her own contributions to feminist theology in a Briish context. In part a personal recollection and celebration of her feminism, the article concludes that Loades curates women’s writing about Christianity over the centuries, in terms that tend towards the insights of a 20th century western feminism, informed by the classical disciplines of her theological and philosophical training. It suggests that her purpose in writing and teaching feminist theology is to create resources that will continue to make Christianity – and the Anglican Church – possible for women in a world in which this – with all that particularly feminist-inspired theory, philosophy and activism have uncovered – is looking increasingly problematic.

ABSTRACT Ann Loades’ exploration of sacramentality is extraordinarily wide-ranging in its sense of where the sacramental is to be discovered. It is also rigorously theologically discerning. The matters to which she paid attention may seem unconventional at times, but they are always to be referred to the doctrinal criteria which became most significant in her work: creation, salvation, the communion of saints, the incarnation, and the Trinity. This article considers two sets of evidence – a video interview conducted near the end of Ann’s life in which she meditates on aspects of embodiment through the governing metaphor of dance, and those examples of her writing explicitly addressed to sacramental concerns – as important sources for illuminating her distinctive approach to sacramentality.

Two thirds of the way through reading the book, I had lots of useful things to say about details of the treatment of Galileo, and they have gone by the board dealing with the rush of ideas at the end of the book. As it is, the urge to tell you more about all the interesting things in this book must be curtailed by my word limit, but please, read. It starts well, and gets even better. The only things I could wish improved are the index – reasonable, but there was so much I wanted to look up to cross-reference – and a few more stops to assess the history in the light of the key questions. But maybe that would have slowed the excitement down.
