For thousands of years, bricks have been considered as one of the most important and indispensable materials for most construction projects. Nevertheless, bricks manufacturing is mainly composed of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that still need to make greater efforts to adopt automation and digitized solutions to face the difficulties that face the industry and create improvements related to efficiency, quality, and wastes and cost reduction. This article proposes an internet of things (IoT)-based platform to improve workflow in bricks production. The platform aims to detect the number of stoppages in the production process, report these stoppages, and identify the sources for variability and inconsistency in the workflow. The article explains the development of the platform and its different components, its use in a family SME in the north of France, and the faced challenges during the use of this platform.

The increased use of wood-based materials such as CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) can reduce the GHG emissions of the construction sector. Likewise, offsite and modular construction methods can lead to more efficient material use, reducing construction-generated solid waste. However, it is worth noting that employing mass timber and modular construction is not automatically beneficial under all circumstances. The transition from the current linear, high-impact, and wasteful construction practices to a circular, regenerative one can offer an alternative solution to the problem. Moreover, high education institutions can play an influential role in this transition. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding education for circularity in architectural design. This paper aims to address this gap. It presents an educational approach integrating circular design principles with mass timber and modular construction in the setting of an architectural design studio. This paper analyses the pedagogical methods employed and the learning outcomes of the design studio. The results showed students successfully integrated architectural design and knowledge of modular mass timber technology with an innovative circular rationale and exceeded the learning outcomes in two cases.

Worksite communication is a key to boosting teamwork and improving worker performance on the construction worksite. Communication among workers on the construction site mostly consists of speech communication. However, construction sites are typically noisy due to construction tasks like drilling and operation of heavy equipment. Meanwhile, workers on construction sites typically represent a range of different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and have different speaking accents. This can make it difficult for the listener to understand the speaker clearly, leading to miscommunication and errors in decision making on the construction site. Technological advancements in recent years can be leveraged to mitigate this problem. In this paper, a keyword identification framework is developed for speech communication on the construction site. For this framework, 12 hours of raw audio data containing 18 crane signalman speech commands (referred to as “keywords”) are collected. The crane signalman uses specific keywords to communicate with the crane operator and guide the crane operator in the crane operations. The 2-second audio clips (this being the approximate duration of each keyword) are extracted from the raw audio dataset, and construction site noise is added. Moreover, mel-frequency cepstral coefficients are extracted from the waveform audio dataset. The extracted mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, in turn, are used to train the 1-dimensional convolutional neural network. After training, the model is found to achieve a training accuracy of 97.3%, a validation accuracy of 96.1%, and a testing accuracy of 93.8%. The model is further deployed for real-time identification of keywords in speech, with the model achieving an accuracy of 95.3%. In light of these findings, it can be concluded that the developed framework is suitable for real-time application in noisy construction sites for identifying specific keywords in speech.

The use of off-site construction methods is increasing within the construction industry. While this method has been captured by a variety of terms, they all refer to the process of producing project components in a manufacturing-like facility off-site and transporting completed units to site to be assembled to achieve the desired end-product. To support the quantification of safety performance in off-site construction versus conventional on-site methods, the research has developed a generalized model for capturing and evaluating construction methods. The methodology was developed in partnership with local practitioners to define, assess and compare on-site and off-site construction practices with a safety lens, and the methodology is partially validated in collaboration with various project owners to assess case study projects that employed off-site construction into their processes. The evaluation methodology takes a construction product-focused approach with emphasis on defining a complete material supply chain and capturing the data needed to support quantifiable safety evaluations of the process. As such, the approach takes a unique approach to establish an evaluation methodology for future comparisons.

Applying Design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) principles in building has gained attention in recent years. Studies reported that the application of DfMA in building projects can significantly enhance overall productivity. However, the literature on DfMA in the construction industry is still limited. This paper aims to provide an updated and comprehensive review of DfMA approach and its applicability in the construction industry. Web of science, and Google Scholar databases were used to obtain relevant articles from the literature. The study is based on a systematic review of 52 selected articles through search keywords for DfMA. The bibliometric results mapped the research publications by year, journal, and country in which the DfMA study is conducted. The thematic analysis results revealed the research themes and trends. In conclusion, the DfMA literature has increasingly focused on integration and sharing of information during project life-cycle to optimize design, manufacturing, and assembly, and to address issues relating to the integration of off-site manufacturing with on-site assembly. Finally, the review is concluded by providing recommendations for researchers and practitioners, and by identifying future works and opportunities for the application of DfMA in the construction industry. The results of this paper can help future theoretical and empirical research and developments.

Although Modular Construction (MC) is already known in Brazil mainly to due the fast construction of health facilities during the Covid 19 pandemic, very few developers and building companies have adopted it as an ordinary strategy. Previous studies do not focus on analysing how start-up companies can contribute to MC establishment in the country. This study aims to describe the journey of a local start-up company in adopting MC following a descriptive case-study approach. The findings suggest that the following drivers are crucial for the survival and success of a start-up MC company (i) the development of a variety of products that fits market segments and ensuring a minimal sale revenue regularly to pay fixed costs until it manages to capture investment to scale its business; (ii) taking into consideration it takes time and practice first on a smaller scale before going to larger projects, and multi-story modular buildings; (iii) training of skilled professionals and education on design and detailing on MC building technologies; (iv) standardization of building components, product and design to certain levels is inevitable.

The main objective of this study was external facade deviation analyses applied to prefabricated off-site concrete modules. This article is decomposed into three main parts: the first part is dedicated to the introduction and to the research background. The second part explains and details the construction project, the off-site factory, the modules as well as the use of a terrestrial laser scanner. A Framework and a data acquisition layout are also exposed. The third part elaborates, in addition to the discussion and study limitations, the main key results which were obtained. The bulging effect on the bottom half of the modules can be explained by the fact that, the greater the quantity of concrete is poured, the more the inside pressure of the formwork increases, exposing the mould’s structure to additional deformations.

With the enormous population growth in the last few decades, there is a demand for infrastructure development and rapid urbanization that result in the depletion of natural resources, emission of greenhouse gases, and subsequently, exacerbation of the climate crisis. Moreover, waste materials generated by different industries such as the construction industry end up by burning or dumping them in landfills further posing serious health hazards. Besides, skyrocketing prices of housing and limited income of major population groups have resulted in the housing crisis. Therefore, it is imperative to find low-cost, environment friendly and sustainable solutions to mitigate aforementioned problems. The literature indicates that the modular construction method could be a viable solution that can reduce waste generation and construction costs. This method has been extensively used in many parts of the world in different applications mostly in the construction of low-rise buildings. However, with the advent of technological advancement in the construction industry, studies have shown that modular construction can also be successfully employed for medium and high-rise buildings. This paper presents a holistic review of the existing literature on the development of modular wall panels to foster sustainability and alleviate the housing gap. To this end, a proactive approach has been undertaken to identify key research areas to study the use of waste materials in the development of modular wall panels. The results of the literature review revealed that modular wall panels have the potential to substantially reduce the construction cost and carbon footprint. The barriers to the growth of modular construction were also discussed in this paper.

The literature indicates that the modular construction method could be a viable solution that can reduce waste generation and construction costs. This method has been extensively used in many parts of the world in different applications mostly in the construction of low-rise buildings. However, with the advent of technological advancement in the construction industry, studies have shown that modular construction can also be successfully employed for medium and high-rise buildings. This paper presents a holistic review of the existing literature on the development of modular wall panels to foster sustainability and alleviate the housing gap. To this end, a proactive approach has been undertaken to identify key research areas to study the use of waste materials in the development of modular wall panels. The results of the literature review revealed that modular wall panels have the potential to substantially reduce the construction cost and carbon footprint. The barriers to the growth of modular construction were also discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":422911,"journal":{"name":"Modular and Offsite Construction (MOC) Summit Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130827670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lean Construction (LC) combines theoretical research and industry best practices in an off-site industrialized construction environment that adopts Lean Manufacturing (LM) concepts and the know-how to reduce waste in the end-to-end lean construction process. Off-site construction industries strive to implement lean manufacturing theory and application to maximize the allocation of their resources, reduce construction waste, and optimize processes to be economically competitive. However, decision-makers usually encounter barriers while selecting the best lean tools for successful integration. Those barriers are organizational priorities, mass customization, process limitation, and improvement consensus. As a result, lean practitioners tend to implement tools such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Process Activity Mapping (PAM), Root Cause Diagram (RCD), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Pareto Analysis (PA) to analyze and propose improvements to a manufacturing process effectively. However, the construction industry lacks a tool that can assess the effectiveness of the lean construction concepts implementation. Thus, this paper proposes an innovative approach to select and evaluate the appropriate lean concepts implemented in an off-site industrialized factory. Firstly, the assessment matrix utilizes Fuzzy-AHP in a pairwise comparison to determine the relationships and calculate the correlations between lean concepts based on the designed hierarchy structure. Secondly, the House of Quality (HoQ) matrix will be integrated to prioritize the selection criteria based on the company's strategic requirements and customer requirements. Finally, the proposed multi-criteria multi-decision ranking matrix is able to prioritize the top lean concepts and demonstrate their combinational impact by eliminating participant's subjectivity, bias, and preferences. The proposed assessment matrix was implemented in an off-site panelized construction case study to prove its effectiveness and validity. The results presented the synergies between different lean concepts combinations and their importance in a lean construction environment.

BIM implementation by organisations is a bit challenging for many organisations. It has become an essential yardstick for project execution in the construction industry. However, many organisations struggle to achieve its implementation as they are still in the chaotic stage due to the BIM introduction. However, the knowledge of the inherent value and usefulness resulting from BIM implementation can help them transform from the status quo to a new status quo. The study adopted purposive sampling through a quantitative approach to identify the merits of organisational BIM adoption. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire from thirty BIM aligned construction organisations. The study identified the critical BIM benefits to construction organisations. In addition, the structure among the factors was identified through principal cluster analysis and three clusters were identified; these are achieving competitive advantage through BIM adoption, effective organisational process and enhanced work output and achieving project outcome. The results of this study provide insight, and it is instructive to stakeholders in the construction industry to aid BIM diffusion.
