A new instantaneous torque control strategy is presented for the high performance control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. In order to deal with the torque pulsation problem of the PM synchronous motor in the low-speed region, new torque estimation and control techniques are proposed. The linkage flux of the PM synchronous motor is estimated using a model reference adaptive control system technique and the developed torque of the motor is instantaneously controlled by a torque controller combining variable structure control with space vector PWM. The proposed control scheme provides the advantage of reducing the torque pulsation caused by the nonsinusoidal flux distribution of the motor. This control strategy is applied to a high torque PM synchronous motor drive system for direct drive applications and implemented by using a software of the DSP TMS320C30. Computer simulations and experiments are carried out for this system and the results demonstrate well the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

The instability of the input capacitors midpoint voltage in the half-bridge topology observed using peak current-mode control is investigated and a simple solution, which does not require any modification of the converter power stage, is proposed. As far as voltage-mode control is concerned, a novel multi-loop control allows synthesis of the desired regulator transfer function by using only low-pass filters, thus reducing the high-frequency noise coupling typical of standard PID regulators and reducing the dependency of crossover frequency and phase margin on output capacitor ESR. In the paper, useful design considerations are given and verified with an experimental prototype.

As consumer and industrial requirements for compact, high power density, electrical power systems grow substantially over the next decade, development of high power/energy density capacitor technology is a major enabling technology component element. This paper describes the results of a continuing study of the Power Sources Manufacturer's Association Capacitor R&D Committee of capacitor technologies for microsecond to fractional-second electrical energy storage, discharge, filtering and power conditioning applications. For such applications, capacitor technology is unequalled in flexibility and adaptability to meet a broad range of requirements in the future.

Xenon flash lamps are one of the brightest light sources available. They are used from simple applications like camera flashes to extremely demanding ones such as photometry, chemical analysis, spectroscopy, etc. A power supply to drive a xenon lamp must provide a substantially high voltage and current, and must provide a controlled high voltage pulse to strike the arc. The influence of the parameters of the power supply and parasitics on light output, stability and lamp life is analyzed in this paper. The experimental results have been evaluated with several types of lamps and with power supplies developed to make them.

A three-phase inverter with a neutral leg is presented in this paper, in comparison with a conventional neutral point clamped three-phase inverter with split DC link capacitors, to deal with load unbalance in a high-power rotary standalone power supply system. With the additional neutral leg, the space vector modulation control is much more complex, and there is no precedent literature addressing this issue. In this paper a general definition of space vector in a three-dimensional space is described. Space vector modulation control of this inverter is discussed, as well as design considerations.

A new single-ended, zero current switching DC-to-AC power inverter named the Class-L introduced. Because of its parallel resonant nature, the Class-L inverter is well-suited for high voltage applications. Circuit operation is illustrated by a detailed description and a ballast application is given for driving a cold cathode fluorescent lamp. Solution for the output characteristics of the inverter is illustrated by the output plane plot of the inverter. Experimental results are also presented.

Printed circuit board mounted DC-DC power converters, also referred to as point-of-use power supplies (PUPS), are an integral and critical component of products developed and manufactured by Nortel. As a key component, the reliability of these devices has direct impact on quality of product manufactured by Nortel. Many of the converters utilized in Nortel products are standard "off the shelf" commercial units, available from a wide variety of manufacturers. With the proliferation of the use of these devices, former qualification methods had proven incapable of assuring the quality and reliability requirements for a telecom environment. This paper describes the current setup, test, statistical analysis and failure analysis methods used to assess DC-DC power converter design quality and reliability.

A review of literature and patent records for industrial controls and power electronics over the past 100 years shows a pattern of circuit invention, loss and reinvention, often repeated. This has resulted in a great waste of time and effort, as well as interminable legal wrangling and the loss of useful ideas for long periods of time. This paper gives an overview of the problem using several examples of circuits of interest. The paper then goes on to discuss searching for prior work.

This paper proposes a new filter topology that suppresses the high voltage gradient (dv/dt) in AC motor terminals when a cable feeding a motor is very long. By using the proposed filter in the inverter terminal, the rising and the falling edge of the PWM waveform of the inverter are smoothed, resulting in less voltage gradient to the AC motor. The effectiveness of the proposed filter is compared to that of the conventional scheme and its effectiveness is verified by computer simulation, as well as by prototype experiments.

A lossless turn-on snubber was studied analytically, by simulation and experimentally. Limits were found for the proper operation of the snubber and are expressed as permissible duty cycle as a function of input current. It was found that a modified version of the snubber, which includes a tapped main inductor, improves the performance by allowing a wider operational range. The experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis. A reduction of power losses of about 19 W was observed when the snubber was implemented in a 1 kW boost power converter.
