WOJCIECH TOMASIK Kazimierz Wielki University, Bydgoszcz JASIEŃSKI’S SHADOW A BIOBIBLIOGRAPHICAL CONTRIBUTION In Bruno Jasieński’s literary output there is a piece which remains unnoted in biographical papers and bibliographies, namely a volume published in Moscov in the year 1934 entitled Беломорско-Балтийский канал имени Сталина: История строительства, 1931–1934 гг. (Belomor: An Account of the Construction of the Great Canal Between the White Sea and the Baltic Sea) edited by Maxim Gorky, Leopold Auerbach, and Semen Georgievich Firin. Jasieński is found among the group of 120 writers who came to sightsee the White Sea–the Baltic Sea Canal build with the hands of prisoners, and subsequently entered the group of 36 men of letters invited to prepare a collective work documenting the visit. The work’s content is preceded by a list of contributors. Jasieński is found among the co-authors of chapter 9: To Kill Class Enemy in which the Polish writer probably prepared the parts the protagonists of which are Central Asia prisoners. Before his travel to the construction Jasieński published a novel in Russian about the building of a canal in Tajikistan entitled Man Changes His Skin. With the novel he might have won favor of Soviet authorities which made him responsible for preparing the fragments of chapter 9 about the ideological maturation of builders from national minorities. It cannot be excluded that Jasieński participated also in the parts prepared by Anna Berzin, at that time the writer’s wife. 36 J a s i e ń s k i, Człowiek zmienia skórę, [Księga 1], s. 201–202. 37 Ibidem, s. 350.

THE yEAR 1836: JULIUSZ SŁOWACKI By THE PIRAMIDS Among the many Polish travellers who visited Egypt in the 19th century, Juliusz Słowacki deserves special attention. He stayed in Egypt from October 20th, 1836, to the end of that year. Słowacki’s companion in the travel was Zbigniew Brzozowski, and also, though separately, two brothers and their friends Stefan and Aleksander Hołyński made a trip to that country. All of them, with the exception of the émigré poet, were wealthy landowners. Słowacki robbery of Egyptian antiquities done by art An effect of Słowacki’s travel were poetic reflections about the history of Egypt and the monuments of Egypt. The reflections surpass the “Egyptian” pieces by Western poets contemporary to Słowacki, not excluding Ozymandias by Shelley who, after all, never went to Egypt. Słowacki’s notebook from his travel to the East, containing images, notes and poems, has re cently been found. A part of Krasiński Library collection, for many years considered as destroyed dur ing the war, the notebook, following many war vicissitudes, reached a library in Moscow and is pres ently a subject of editorial activities performed by Polish specialists within the framework of the project sponsored by the Polish National Centre for Science (grant nr. NCN 2014/15/B/H52/01360) and di rected by professor Maria Kalinowska.

AGNIESZKA CZECHOWICZ John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin WACŁAW POTOCKI’S “MUZA POLSKA” (“POLISH MUSE”) AS AN EPIDEICTIC HEROICUM The article refers to Wacław Potocki’s poem Muza polska na tryjumfalny wjazd Najaśniejszego Jana III [...] (Polish Muse for a Triumphant Entering of His Majesty John III [...] ) published anonymously on the occasion of King John III Sobieski’s coronation in 1676. The piece, the content of which concentrates on the course of the 1672–1676 war waged between Poland and Turkey, is equally panegyrical and epic-historical in its character. The author of the paper focuses her attention on Potocki’s poetic creation of King John III Sobieski’s image, the most important attribute of which is temperance (Lat. temperantia) described in Plato’s Republic as an ability to abstain from lust due to which a man’s better part dominates over the worse one. The martial efforts undertaken by Sobieski and crowned with victories are depicted in Potocki’s poem not only as the example of regal virtues but also as an allegory of a war a man is waging against one’s own weakness and passions in order to gain control over oneself.
