WITOLD WOJTOWICZ University of Szczecin “KOMEDYJA JUSTYNA I KONSTANCYJEJ” (“A COMEDY OF JUSTYN AND KONSTANCJA”) MORALITY PLAY BY MARCIN BIELSKI AND THE CARNIVAL Marcin Bielski’s Komedyja Justyna i Konstancyjej (A Comedy of Justyn and Konstancja, 1557) may be linked to the carnival due to that it clearly categorises both the negative attitudes and the ones which gain approval, which is typical of the morality play poetics. Theological circumstances of the carnival meet in the debate of Krotofila (Burlesque), Justinus and Czas (Time) with a medical context. RYSZARD ZAJĄCZKOWSKI John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin JÓZEF WITTLIN – TRACING ESCAPE AND SALVATION The article refers to war and post-war life of Józef Wittlin and his family. It initially depicts his trials and tribulations from the moment of the poet’s departure to the former Royaumont Abbey near Paris in June 1939 till his voyage from Lisbon to the USA in January 1941. From the moment Wittlin reached America he permanently lived in New York, struggling with numerous health and financial problems. In spite of that he continued his writing, and was even laureate of American awards for literature. In the year 1948 he finally decided to stay in America. His memories (continued till his death, though not always published) depict America as an emigrant-unfriendly country. Truly, however, Polish writers (e.g. Aleksander Janta-Połczyński, Kazimierz Wierzyński, Czesław Miłosz) left also a different images of this country, and Wittlin’s voice should not be seen as the only reflection on American reality since it almost completely neglects its positive sides. All in all, Wittlin gives a provocative vision of the country and compels to a discussion on the American myth.

The article is devoted to a reflection on sensuality and representations of mental experience in Zygmunt Krasiński’s correspondence. It depicts the themes related to the phenomena and presents a hierarchy of senses with a marked sight-centrism. The poet proves to be a figure that desensualises experience, and he strives to inward it. The vision of ideal subjectivity formulated by Krasiński admittedly sets up a synthesis of body and soul as the vision gives a spiritual character to what is sensual. Residual sen-sual experience is in the poet occupied by feeling love and – especially – facing disease and death.

ROMAnTiciSM Georomanticism is a collection of studies on the connections between Romantic literature and broadly understood space. The new approach to the issues that have been raised many times unfolds in rec ognising the cultural perspective as overriding, since this perspective opens the field of research in identity problems (connected e.g. with political and civilizational changes), in confrontation of various spatial orders (consideration on common/arguable/separate places) or spatial imagery, as well as in the “avant-garde” role of Romanticism for such fields of new humanities as politics of place, ecocriti -cism, and open or comparative regionalism. A separate value of the collection is its polyphony display ing in a variety of approaches and diversity of applied methods and discourses to which the volume refers.

MARCIN CAŁBECKI University of Gdańsk SKAMANDER AND AVANT-GARDE ON THE FIRM GROUND ON KAROL WIKTOR ZAWODZIŃSKI AND JÓZEF CZECHOWICZ’S ARGUMENT The article is an account of a vigorous polemic between two important representatives of the Inter-war literary life, namely Karol Wiktor Zawodziński and Józef Czechowicz. It took place in the papers in the year 1935. On the surface, it referred to the issues connected with poetic criticism, but in consequence it led to personal accusations and almost ended with a duel. What remains in the background is the revealing of Czechowicz’s homosexuality which in the 1930s meant infamy and became the source of his grave personal problems. The article also allows to reconsider the picture of Polish Inter-War literary life. As it transpires, the representatives of the epoch’s elites were familiar with prejudice, disrelish and simple meanness.
