SOCIAL POLICY AND SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS ON INTRODUCED MEASURES AND MEDIA COVERAGE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC 社会政策与社工专业学生对新冠疫情期间出台的措施和媒体报道的思考

Introduced measures to deal with COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia affected everyday life of people. Media coverage during the pandemic played a significant role in providing verified information, protecting human health and well-being. In order to gain insight into the reactions of social work students on introduced measures and media coverage about these measures during the state of emergency in Republic of Serbia, an analysis of reflective journals is presented. Eighty reflective journals were analyzed, where students’ reactions on introduced measures and media coverage related to these measures are monitored and linked to the electronic archive of the public media service Radio Television of Serbia news. Students’ thoughts on several identified measures are presented and analyzed together with their reactions on media coverage about these measures. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAMILY AND ADOLESCENTS’ FAMILY LIFE SATISFACTION ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to determine adolescents’ family life satisfaction and to investigate whether there are differences in adolescents’ family life satisfaction depending on the personal characteristics of the study participants (gender, age) and family characteristics (family structure, education and employment of parents). The study involved 10,138 students from all grades of high schools from five major Croatian cities: Zagreb, Osijek, Split, Pula, and Varaždin. The quota sample was stratified with respect to three Croatian secondary school programs, three- and four-year vocational schools and grammar schools, and individual orientations within each of the schools. In the total sample, 47.5% were young men (N = 4,595) and the mean age was Mage = 16.2 (SDage = 1.16). Of the total number of participants, 4.5% (N = 456) did not report their gender. The results show that there are differences in adolescents’ family life satisfaction in terms of gender, age, living with both parents or one parent, and parents’ educational and work status. The results point to the need for a timely implementation of effective parenting skills programs and preventive interventions aimed at the family or parents, considering the gender of adolescents. Low levels of parental education and unemployment are associated with lower levels of adolescents’ satisfaction with their family life. Systematic investments through national policies and programs that increase opportunities for (lifelong) education and employment for parents seem to be important for investing in the quality of the family environment. CHALLENGES IN POVERTY ALLEVIATION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE MINIMUM INCOME SYSTEMS IN CROATIA AND SLOVENIA ABSTRACT Minimum income systems in the countries of the European Union are an important instrument in the policy of fighting poverty. Although in several strategic documents of various EU institutions, member states are invited to improve their minimum income systems and the recommendations how to do it are included, in a large number of EU countries, including Croatia, the aforementioned recommendations are still awaiting implementation. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to achieve a deeper insight into the potentials and challenges of the minimum income system in their focus on poverty alleviation and better social integration of their users in Croatia and Slovenia through a comparative analysis of the minimum income systems in Croatia and Slovenia. For the comparison and evaluation of the minimum income systems, numerous indicators will be analysed, such as the rate of adequacy of the minimum income and the rate of coverage of the poor by the minimum income for the period from 2018 to 2020. Elements of the availability of the minimum income system to citizens will be analysed, such as the complexity of the application process and the complexity of the method of checking income and assets, the so-called means test. At the end, after the analysis, certain recommendations for improving the minimum income system in the Republic of Croatia will be presented. Marko Buljevac Petra Liber Antonela Previšić QUALITY OF LIFE OF ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DIFFICULTIES AND THEIR PARENTS: INSIGHTS AND SPECIFICITIES ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to summarize and explore certain specificities of individual domains of the quality of life of adults with intellectual difficulties and their parents. The paper presents, describes and discusses insights into and specificities of personal development, self-determination, interpersonal relations, social inclusion, rights, emotional well-being, physical well-being and material well-being of adults with intellectual difficulties, as well as physical health, psychological health, social relations and environment of the parents of adults with intellectual difficulties. The aforementioned domains with related indicators show the quality of life of the families of persons with intellectual difficulties who are frequent users of the formal support system. The quality of life of adults with intellectual difficulties and their parents is determined through different subjective and objective indicators, and it is affected by variousfactors,such assupport,social networks, formalsupportsystem, but also by certain characteristics of individuals. Persons with intellectual difficulties influence the quality of life of their parents, and the parents affect the quality of life of their adult children with intellectual difficulties. The quality of life represents an important concept in work with families of persons with intellectual difficulties and it should be determined in order to gain an insight into the lives of adults with intellectual difficulties and their parents, but also as a feedback about the support provided within the formal support system. CHARACTERISTICS OF »SNAPCHAT« USE AMONG ZAGREB HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABSTRACT In the last decade, social networks have become one of the most important »technological tools« in the lives of people around the world, used mainly by adolescents (especially girls). Currently, the most widely used ones are Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. This paper aims to explore the characteristics of Snapchat use among high school students in the City of Zagreb, mainly due to its great popularity, the amount of time spent on this social network, and possible psychosocial risks, mainly due to its great popularity, but also due to the lack of domestic literature in this field. A total of 825 students participated in the study (NB=404; NG=418; 3 students did not provide gender information), and the age range was from 14 to 20 years (Mage=16.65; SDage=1.208). The results show that over 80% of high school students use Snapchat, and the differences in frequency of use were found in terms of gender, age, i.e., grade, and type ofschool. Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok are the most popular social networks among Zagreb high school students, and the use of one of these networks is moderately related to the use of the others, so the resultsspeak offor a preferred and dominantsocial network that is used more often than others. In conclusion, no differences in the severity of Internet addiction were found in relation to the frequency of Snapchat use. The results obtained allow a better understanding of the characteristics of the use of thissocial network among high school students and are interpreted in the context of the current challenges of scientific research and the possibility of developing psychosocial interventions. Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok are the most popular social networks among Zagreb high school students, and the use of one of these networks is moderately related to the use of the others, so the resultsspeak offor a preferred and dominantsocial network that is used more often than others. In conclusion, no differences in the severity of Internet addiction were found in relation to the frequency of Snapchat use. The results obtained allow a better understanding of the characteristics of the use of thissocial network among high school students and are interpreted in the context of the current challenges of scientific research and the possibility of developing psychosocial interventions. THE BENEFITS OF SERVICE LEARNING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FUTURE SOCIAL WORKERS Service learning (DKU) is an innovative method based on experiential learning whose implementation in the educational system can achieve numerous benefits for the academic and social community. The aim of the research presented by this paper was to examine the perceived profits of DKU among social work students (N = 23) due to the pilot implementation of the elective DKU course in the first year of study. Three research questions were asked related to the student’s perception of gains from participation in DKU projects for various actors in the project, self-assessment of satisfaction with certain elements of the DKU and proposals for improving the course. Research questions were elaborated in a survey applied upon completion of the course; answers to open-type questions were processed using the method of qualitative content analysis, and answers to closed-type questions by quantitative analysis of data. According to the results, students primarily recognize the numerous profits of DKU for themselves on a personal and professional level, but they also perceive a range of profits for users, associations and the wider community. Furthermore, students are very satisfied with the different elements of DKU and believe that it has enabled them to get to know the practice of social work better. And, finally, students propose (even) more emphasis on the preparation and design of projects and on working in the association / community, as well as more reflections orally. The results speak in favor of increasing quotas in the DKU course and/or the implementation of DKU on several courses at the beginning of the study. ABSTRACT The aim of the research was to examine the moderating role of the group status (minority or majority) on the relationship between intergroup contact and willingness to get involved in a collective action with the aim of reducing inequalities of the persons with homosexual orientation with regard to the heterosexual majority. Additionally, the aim was to analyse the moderating role of the group status on the relationship between intergroup contact and perceived intergroup threat. The research was conducted via online survey on a sample of 286 respondents out of whom there were 187 heterosexual persons and 99 members of the LGBTIQ population. The respondents completed a survey which included a measure of quality of contact with the members of the other group, the scale of perceived symbolic threat and the scale of willingness to take collective action aimed at the improvement of the position of the LGBTIQ population. The results show a significant connection between intergroup contact and willingness to take collective action and perceived intergroup threat. The moderating role of the group status was confirmed, whereas on the sample of heterosexual persons a more positive contact with the members of the other group increases willingness to take collective action, while for homosexual persons the intergroup contact is not connected with the willingness to take collective action. Furthermore, the moderating role of the group status was confirmed on the relationship between the quality of contact and perception of symbolic threat, at which a more positive contact with the members of the other group was connected with the reduced perception of that group as a threat in both samples of respondents, but a higher effect of it was observed in the case of heterosexual persons. The results are analysed from the perspective of the contact theory and the neglected role of group status in that context. DO CHILDREN WHO LIVE IN POVERTY HAVE EQUAL ACCESS TO EDUCATION? ABSTRACT Growing up in poverty bears numerous risks for children which may have different consequences on their growth and development and affect their adult age. Education is one of key parameters of breaking the cycle of poverty, but educational and social policies still do not recognise to a sufficient extent the importance of investing in targeted measures and services which are directed towards overcoming the barriers these children are faced with. Although according to the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia education should be free and accessible to all, different research and status review of the accessibility of services and other aspects related to educational processes clearly indicate numerous aspects which require substantial material resources. In that sense children who live in poverty are extremely disadvantaged which puts them in an unequal position in comparison with their peers in the education system. The paper presents some obstacles that the children who live in poverty are faced with which additionally contribute to social differences in the education system. Introduction of accessible and universal services and measures into the system of education would contribute to a fairer position of the children of lower socio-economic status and enable their equal participation with other children. Literature in developmental psychology mentions fathers in child development much less than mothers. Previously the primary attachment between a mother and a child was emphasised, however today a dual attachment is stressed – a child may develop an attachment to the father and the mother. Modern, or as some researchers call them “new” fathers want to be involved in their children’s lives, which reflects in a greater well-being of fathers and children alike. Fathers can be biological and non-biological, more or less involved in their children’s upbringing. The paper provides an overview of the forms of fatherhood which are less represented in the general population: fathers who do not live with their children, single fathers, step-fathers, homosexual fathers and sperm donor fathers. It can be concluded that fatherhood is still largely unexplored, especially in the case of less common forms of fatherhood. In this article we discuss the nature of service user involvement in Higher Education (HE) social work programmes in both England and Slovenia. This discussion is based on our experiences of supporting such programmes alongside evidence derived from the literature. Firstly, we present a discussion of the effective development of service user involvement in the respective HEIs in our two countries. Secondly, we explore how the involvement of experts-by-experience in HEIs benefits the learning of social work students. Thirdly, we investigate how the emergence of Covid-19 has influenced the delivery of social work education and the involvement of service users in our respective social work programmes. We conclude by noting that our social work programmes have been forced to adapt to the needs of students in an online community and have embraced inclusive education. As a result of this, we suggest that the needs of experts-by-experience should inform the development of social work education and that they should be consulted on how they choose to be involved in educational practice. This discussion is based on our experiences of supporting such programmes alongside evidence derived from the literature. Firstly, we present a discussion of the effective development of service user involvement in the respective HEIs in our two countries. Secondly, we explore how the involvement of experts-by-experience in HEIs benefits the learning of social work students. Thirdly, we investigate how the emergence of Covid-19 has influenced the delivery of social work education and the involvement of service users in our respective social work programmes. We conclude by noting that our social work programmes have been forced to adapt to the needs of students in an online community and have embraced inclusive education. As a result of this, we suggest that the needs of experts-by-experience should inform the development of social work education and that they should be consulted on how they choose to be involved in educational practice.
