It presents the result of theoretical research on the history of information science from its theories and concepts. From the systematization of the collected data, a framework has been built in which information science is divided into three major moments: the founding period, in which information science was born as a result of five distinct phenomena (the 1960s); the period of expansion of the problems, with the constitution of six sub-areas (1970s to 1990s); and contemporary perspectives, presented here from the identification of twelve distinct approaches developed in the last twenty years. Next, the six dimensions of the information concept are presented in which the most significant conceptual advances have been made over these decades. Its findings show that the diversity of theories is an enriching factor for the field, but also produces the need for systematization and mapping works.

The paper traces the development of digital encyclopedias through four main stages: 1. The age of the first text-based online services; 2. the age of multimedia CD-ROMs, mainly based on the idea of an offline multimedia encyclopedia; 3. the first generation of web encyclopedias, when the web version initially supplemented and then thoroughly replaced CD-ROMs; 4. the age of data oriented, semantic-aware encyclopedias. This chronological framework is used to discuss how different models of encyclopedias and encyclopedism – including the Wikipedia model – have been intertwined with technological developments on the one side, and with the cultural debate on the new digital ecosystem (and on its role for the publishing industry) on the other.

Researchers, particularly doctoral students, face numerous challenges in their academic pursuits. The influence of gender and marital status factors in a researcher's Ph.D. journey in this context was examined. The study aimed to identify whether researcher problems were influenced by marital and gender factors and attempt to determine how the library could support the researchers. Few studies explore the role of support systems, especially the library, to meet researcher needs and help alleviate their doctoral challenges. The present study examined a sample of 500 AHSS (Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences) doctoral students, from five top-ranking Indian state universities regarding their researcher problems. Data was collected with a structured questionnaire. The study found conclusive evidence that a researcher's marital status and gender played an essential part in their research career. The authors recommended the library's possible roles as research support within this framework and how best the library could help assuage doctoral challenges.

The librarian interest in the preservation and cataloguing of cartographic resources is an old topic, but the widespread awareness within the library profession belongs to the post-World War II period. For a very long time, in fact, these resources were not subjected to adequate bibliographic control. The reasons for this delay are many: the lack of awareness of these resources by the library community, the tendency to consider them an "inferior" category compared to traditional library resources and the difficulty in defining a common description model both at national and international level. It is only since the middle of the 20th century that the urgency of dealing with this heritage of extraordinary documentary value has been felt. Since then, much has been done both in terms of the census of these resources and the definition of guidelines within international standards, but much remains to be done.

Il fondo preso in analisi e l’Archivio Chini, appartenente all'artista toscano Galileo Chini.

The Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program and its sister program the Preassigned Control Number (PCN) Program have provided prepublication metadata to publishers since 1971. For the first three decades, CIP publishers submitted paper applications, and CIP staff manually keyed the information into the Library of Congress’s local cataloging system. Between 1999 and 2003, the Library developed an in-house online CIP and PCN system with separate backend modules, the EPCN Traffic Manager and the ECIP Traffic Manager. In 2017 the Library let a contract to completely overhaul the aging online system and replace it with a custom application on a ServiceNow platform. The intensive design and development phase, followed by the controlled chaos surrounding implementation, resulted in a stable, functional, and state-of-the-art application named PrePub Book Link (PPBL). PPBL brought both the CIP and PCN programs into the future with an overall improved user experience, increased security, advanced account management, dynamic Web forms, enhanced ONIX integration and workflows, and features such as the MARC Editor and the customizable CIP data block generator. As the CIP Program prepares for the next 50 years, continued development of PPBL will enable the CIP and PCN programs to thrive.
