In this qualitative study, the authors examined young adult Black American men's perceptions of treatment in mental health diversion programs. Findings included 3 themes: helpful treatment factors, cognitive dissonance, and treatment barriers. The authors explore counseling competency and advocacy considerations for judicial settings.

The authors examined the contributions of emotional intelligence (EI) on burnout in addiction counselors. Results indicated that EI may act as a buffer against burnout, mitigating the impact of addiction counselor burnout. Recommendations are given for counselors, supervisors, and counselor training.

The authors evaluated the effectiveness of continuing education training in motivational interviewing (MI) for addiction counselors. Participants reported a significant increase in counseling self-efficacy, and 87.5% reported increasing MI use in their practice. Only 3.8%, however, participated in posttraining consultation.

The authors examined age differences in baseline features and program response in individuals completing indicated prevention (Prime For Life®) for impaired driving. Risk perception, substance use, and support differed by age at baseline and, despite improvements, continued to differ postprogram.

The authors propose sand tray therapy as a developmentally appropriate, trauma-sensitive, engaging intervention in counseling juvenile offenders as an aid in rehabilitation. The authors present a fictional case study to demonstrate the use of sand tray therapy with a juvenile offender in a correctional setting.

This study examined whether baseline trauma patient characteristics and randomized participation in 1 of 2 brief interventions predicted changes in alcohol use at 6 months postintervention. Higher total Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores predicted greater changes, and specific AUDIT items were significant predictors.

A review of DUI education literature reveals weak evidence of effective interventions. New models are suggested that offer a combination of psychoeducation and evidence-based counseling approaches. Existing DUI programming models are explored with recommendations for areas for future research.
