A number of studies show that being happy is linked to many benefits for the subject. Can it also be associated with prosocial behaviour? Several studies confirm the existence of the glow of goodwill , but this effect is mainly a result of experimentally induced positive emotions. We aimed to investigate whether various forms of well-being are linked with social value orientations and to what extent it depends on individual differences regarding trust, agency and communion. the Generalized Trust and the Agency-Communion Scale. The results revealed that the association between happiness and prosocial orientation was significant and positive, but only in the case of high trust and when agency and communion were controlled for. When psychological wellbeing was applied as a predictor, high trusters were more prosocial and low trusters were more selfish, irrespective of their levels of agency and communion. Our study indicates that the relationship between social orientation and various expressions of wellbeing (such as happiness and psychological wellbeing) is complex and that it should be analysed with reference to the level of trust.

background Although the three-dimensional Vedic personality model (Triguna) and self-compassion have been linked with a variety of life outcomes, little is known about their interplay in shaping goal orientations. We explored the interrelationships and interplay of the Triguna (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) with positive and negative self-compassion in shaping the goal orientations of Indian students.

participants and procedure For this study, 446 healthy women were recruited from a nonclinical population via an online recruitment platform. The participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 65 years (M = 29.67, SD = 8.39). The Polish version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire was used to assess affective temperaments (depressive, cyclothymic, hyperthymic, irritable and anxious). Meteorosensitivity was assessed through the Polish adaptation of the METEO-Q questionnaire. Insomnia was evaluated by the Athens Insomnia Scale.

results The maternal grandmother was most often indicated as the closest grandparent. The perception of grandparental influence was predicted by the quality of intergenerational relationships and grandparental empathy after controlling for sociodemographic variables, moderated by grandchild’s gender. Particularly, both for granddaughters and grandsons the relational closeness with the closest grandparent and perceived empathy were significant predictors of grandparental influence, but perceived grandparental empathy was a stronger predictor for granddaughters, whereas the relational closeness was a stronger predictor for grandsons.

background Emotions and personality traits seem to be important factors affecting social attention. In the present study, we used eye-tracking equipment to investigate the differences between extraverts and introverts in visual attention to positive and negative emotions shown in human faces. We want to describe more detailed types of eye movements in this visual attention, and especially patterns of spatial and temporal fixations. Based on previous research we would expect that extraverts would be more attentive to faces showing positive emotions compared to introverts.

Multilingualism creates possibilities of personal growth, which influences the sense of self-esteem and self-identity. This paper reviews topics related to its impact on the activity of the individual. The relationship between L2 (understood both as a second and/or a foreign language, with a focus on learning English as a foreign language) linguistic achievement, motivation, intercultural competence, and the development of L2 identity depending on foreign language speaking skills are discussed. Some learners aspire to acquire a “bicultural” identity, which involves 2 versions of the learner: 1) a usually English-speaking, globally involved one, and 2) a local L1-speaking self. Therefore, classroom instruction should include teaching materials focused on the L2 culture, and respect students’ aspirations for personal development through foreign language education. Moreover, the students should have control over their own learning, which could be achieved by promoting oracy, studentcentred instruction and cooperative learning.

background Lexical research based on the assumption that all the main human characteristics are encoded in the natural language constitutes one of the alternative ways of developing a taxonomy of individual differences in psychology. The majority of studies to date, including Polish ones, have been restricted to the analysis of the adjective lexicon, which means their results are at risk of reductionism. The aim of the presented research was to develop a classification of the complete Polish lexicon of person-descriptive terms (adjectives, participles, adverbs, nouns, and verbs).

background The goal of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a therapeutic program for female survivors of interpersonal trauma, among others, of domestic violence. The participating women took part in four two-day modules in a group setting during which they were offered focusing training and arts-based Gestalt therapy. The effectiveness of the interventions was evaluated in terms of improvements in body image and body experience, according to the model of body self as developed by Sakson-Obada.
