Renewal of the 14-year journey of the Endangered Archives Programme
R. Suliman
Historical archives around the world are subject to general neglect, ravages of time, poor storage, damaging environmental conditions or the destructive forces of war. The Endangered Archives Programme, first established in 2004, addresses these issues through its unyielding efforts to preserve endangered material, digitise it, safely deposit surrogate copies in more than one location and, most importantly, making it freely available online through the British Library’s website. The Programme ensures that histories of human activities from around the globe remain available for contemporary users and for future generations. This article focuses on the journey that started 14 years ago and is still ongoing due to the valuable contribution by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, to preserve documentary heritage. This article discusses the growth, development and achievements of the Programme. In 2018, Arcadia generously renewed its support of the Endangered Archives Programme, hopefully enabling it to reach further archives that are yet to be preserved.

A place called home: Encounters with libraries
J. Hudson
Libraries exist the world over across diverse cultures and have been in existence since the dawn of civilisation. Libraries can be seen as a collection of marks, often representing sounds, made upon some kind of support, such as stone, papyrus, paper or magnetic discs, which require deciphering and interpretation to have significance. Whether tiny island libraries or huge national libraries, each offers resources that help define identity at a global, national, community and personal level. The library has many roles to play, one that cannot be measured by statistics alone; it embodies freedom of speech and the principles of democracy but can and has been a means of social control; it is often a spontaneous expression of community and conviviality, sharing viewpoints and knowledge or it can be an engineered, assertive national statement; it is often a mixture of all these. The library is more than the sum of its parts and is an expression of the relationship between the human and the mysterious universe we live in.

Wikipedia and libraries
J. Lubbock
As the quality, scope and usefulness of Wikipedia (and its sister projects) increases, the Wikimedia community are increasingly reaching out to academic, library and other information professionals. Through institutional partnerships and training, we show how using Wikimedia projects can bring extra value to the library as a place of digital study and media literacy. Libraries and Wikipedia both aim to bring knowledge to a wider audience, to create spaces where people can safely learn and find the resources they need, and we believe it is possible for us to reach those goals together. This article will describe the complex and wide scope of our work with libraries and explain how our work complements the work of libraries and other cultural institutions. It will provide paths and ideas for librarians to understand how to effectively use the resources provided by Wikimedia to imagine how libraries can serve the public in our digital age.

Book review: Metadata for information management and retrieval – Understanding metadata and its use
N. Schenk
This new and updated second edition of a classic text provides a thought-provoking introduction to metadata for all library, museums, archives and information management students and professionals. The concepts explored, and examples described, arise from a wide range of disciplines including libraries, information and records management, digital objects, research data collections, web resources, digitised images and photographs, social media, music and sound records and museum objects. Metadata for information management and retrieval has been fully revised by David Haynes to bring it up to date with new technology and standards. The new edition, containing new chapters on metadata standards, encoding schemes, very large data collections and the politics and ethics of metadata, assesses the current theory and practice of metadata and examines key developments in terms of both policy and technology. The book is not an instruction manual on how to design or create metadata but is instead a detailed study, introducing the concepts and models behind metadata. It explores how metadata operates from the perspective of both users and managers. The book is divided into three parts:

The effectiveness of the National Library and Information System Authority of Trinidad and Tobago in its role as a national library
Ruth N Williams, S. Renwick
The National Library and Information System Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (NALIS) aims to provide both the functions of a national library as well as a national library service. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of NALIS in its role as a national library. Utilising a qualitative approach, the study used mixed methods: semi-structured interviews with NALIS’ senior management; review of the International Organization for Standardization performance indicators; and comparative analysis of the strategic plans of the National Library of Jamaica and NALIS. Findings revealed that, despite NALIS performing the functions of a national library, key aspects of its services remain unfulfilled. Participants could not agree on the description of NALIS as outlined in the NALIS Act but 60% concluded that, in their personal opinion, NALIS could best be described as a public library which provides a national library service. Point score analysis determined that the most important function was ‘Central Collection of the Nation’s Literature’. The strategic planning of NALIS was found to be in alignment with the age of the organisation, as it is currently in an early phase of operation when policy formulation is critical. Given the turbulent economic environment and the many constraints that NALIS faced, it proved to be effective in the performance of national library functions and continues to strive for excellence in service delivery. It was noted that effective quality management was not adequately performed. Thus, in order to improve the level of service delivery, better quality management measures must be implemented.

Emerging Formats
Caylin Smith, I. Cooke
Since 2013, the UK Legal Deposit Libraries (LDLs) have actively collected, preserved and provided access to e-Journals, e-Books and archived websites acquired under the UK's Non-Print Legal Deposit Regulations. The LDLs are currently in the midst of focusing on more complex content types that have yet to be addressed. The Emerging Formats project is investigating the collection management needs of published works that are created with digital formats that have significant software and hardware dependencies. These include e-Books created as mobile apps, web-based interactive narratives and structured data. This article discusses the collection management challenges of these format types within the framework of UK Non-Print Legal Deposit.
