The Clinical Characteristics of Nosocomial Sinusitis in Patients with Nasogastric Tube: A Single Center Retrospective Study

Background Nosocomial sinusitis is one of the most common nosocomial infections, and has been reported to be associated with fever and other nosocomial infections. In the case of patients with neurological diseases, the incidence and the risk factors of nosocomial sinusitis have not been well studied. Methods We conducted a retrospective study including patients with nasogastric tube in the neurology department. The demographic information, the clinical data and the severity evaluation including Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score were collected. Results: A total of 118 patients were enrolled, and 50 of them were treated in neuro-intensive care unit (NCU). Up to 56.78% of all the patients and 54% of NCU patients have developed nosocomial sinusitis. The length of stay in NCU was significantly correlated with nosocomial sinusitis with the P-value of 0.048. Compared with patients without nosocomial sinusitis, patients with nosocomial sinusitis revealed higher percentage of tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation and longer ventilation duration, though not significantly. The high incidence time of nosocomial sinusitis after indwelling gastric tube was 1.74-9.88 days. Conclusion: Nosocomial sinusitis was highly prevalent in neurological patients with nasogastric tubes. The length of stay in NCU was significantly correlated with nosocomial sinusitis. More research is warranted to elucidate the risk factors for nosocomial sinusitis.

Aim: To review existing literature on adult intussusception and idiopathic adult intussusception, and to summarise current recommendations for the management of adult intussusception and idiopathic adult intussusception. Methods: An electronic search of PubMed was performed with search term “intussusception”, “adult intussusception”, and “idiopathic intussusception”. Studies concerning the paediatric population was excluded. Resultant searches were reviewed and studies which were felt to be relevant were identified with full text retrieved. The references of all retrieved texts were searched to identify any further relevant studies. Background: Intussusception

Long-Term Testosterone Treatment Improves Fatty and with Safe Men with Prospective Abstract Hypogonadism is receiving recognition for being a risk factor for fatty liver and impaired kidney function [1,2]. Emerging data, summarized here, suggest that long-term treatment with testosterone undecanoate injection may improve both liver and kidney function as well as metabolic deterioration with favorable safety profile on metabolism and prostate health [3,4].

Evaluation of the Anti- Yersinia Activity of Botanicals Used During the Abstract Background: During the fourteenth century, the Black Plague ravaged through Europe. At this time, records described using specific botanical formulations, the “Four Thieves” recipe and Nostradamus’ “Rose Petal Lozenges”, as successful therapies for preventing plague-associated bacterial infections. Purpose: This study describes the characterization of the antibacterial activity associated with botanical extractions prepared from these medieval formulations against Yersinia pseudotuberculosis , a related species of Y. pestis , the causative agent of the Plague. Methods: Ethanol and acetic acid extracts were prepared from16 botanicals that may have been used in masks or formulated into tinctures to protect medieval populations from contracting the Plague. These extracts were tested in a dose-dependent manner related to inhibition of the growth of Y. pseudotuberculosis . Results and Conclusions: The results suggest which botanicals may have been useful in reducing infection during the historically detrimental pandemic of Y. pestis . With a renewed and emerging threat of Yersinia -related infections, the results provide insight into the history of botanical medicine and indicate which botanicals may act as another defensive measure against future Yersinia -related infections.

Testosterone Treatment (TTh) Improves Anemia and Hematocrit Increase Reduced Death in Hypogonadal Men: Paradigm Shift of a Risk Factor of TTh. Curr Trends Intern Abstract Real-life 12 years data show that long-term treatment with testosterone treatment has significant reduction in mortality [1-3] and increase of hematocrit, which theoretically could increase risk of fatal cardiovascular events, could not be proven [4]. Summarizing results of research results that aimed to throw the light on the relationship between hematocrit and all-cause mortality in men receiving TTh in long-term setting [5,6].

Anti-Bacterial Activity of Honey Based on Floral Origin
Pub Date : 2022-08-26 DOI: 10.29011/2638-003x.100060

Modern research has documented the potent antimicrobial properties of honey, giving rise to the use of honey-based medical products for the topical treatment of wounds and burns. This study examined the influence of the floral origin related to the antibacterial efficacy of heat-treated honey. For each honey type of a specific floral origin, at least three geographically distinct samples were tested to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration against seven pathogenic bacterial strains. Results supported a significant degree of consistency supporting the role of the honey floral origin in affecting the antibacterial potency. Buckwheat honey performed the best, followed by avocado honey, and then manuka and blueberry honeys. These results support the role of the floral origin in determining the antimicrobial efficacy of honey and the potential therapeutic use of honey from buckwheat, avocado, and blueberry floral origins.
