The E-Blocks Development System, from Matrix Multimedia, is a comprehensive range of modules supporting the design and development of electronic products. It is based on the PICmicro microcontroller family, and aimed at the post-16 education and industrial sectors. A large variety of projects can be assembled using the available modules, from very simple systems requiring just switch inputs and LED outputs, to a fully-functional mobile phone.

Before the era of electronics, electromechanical machines were used for complex calculations. The WW-II Bombe machines, that played a vital role in cracking the Enigma code, represented the ultimate in pre-electronic processing power.

When I reached secondary school at the age of 11, the very first project I made in Technology (woodwork as it was then called) was a table lamp based on a halving joint. When I arrived at my present place of work, I was amazed to find that similar projects were still being made! Fortunately, such projects have since been banished but a safe low voltage version could offer students a really interesting design project. With this in mind, I looked for ways to provide battery powered lighting projects that would be suitable and safe in a young child's bedroom.

The NE555 timer first appeared in 1971. Although it is now well over 30 years old, many exam boards still include it in their specifications. This seems rather odd in a fast developing subject such as electronics. With an ever expanding range of new technology and devices to learn about, perhaps it is now time to relegate the 555 to the museum along with germanium transistors, valves and transistor multivibrators.
