Distribution of dense bone island in the jaw based on the classification of radiopaque areas and their location on panoramic radiographs 基于射线不透区分类及其在全景x线片上定位的颌骨致密骨岛分布

Objectives: This study is aimed to find out the distribution of DBI in the jaw based on the classification of radiopaque areas and their location using panoramic radiographs at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive observational study with total sampling method. The study used secondary data from panoramic radiographs at the RSKGMP Airlangga University Surabaya during 2018–2021, which had a DBI appearance, and analyzed them based on the classification of radiopaque areas and locations. The results of the analysis are then presented in the form of tables and pie charts. Results: Classification of DBI based on radiopaque areas was found in type 5 separate (47.81%), type 4 apical (29.82%), type 3 apical and interradicular (17.54%), type 1 interradicular (3.07%), and the least in type 2 interradicular and separate (1.75%). The most common locations of the lesions were in the premolar region (42.54%), the molar region (27.63%), the canine region (12.28%), the canine-premolar region (8.33%), the premolar-molar region (6.58%), and the least common location in the incisor and incisor-canine regions (1,32%). Conclusion: Classification of DBI based on the most common radiopaque area was found to be type 5 separate, with the most lesion locations in the premolar region. While the least classification was found in type 2 interradicular and separate, the incisive and incisive-canine regions had the fewest lesion locations.

Analysis of the panoramic radiographic density of the mandibular bone in the elderly due to increased cortisol levels 老年人皮质醇水平增高所致的下颌骨全景x线片密度分析

Objectives: Mandibular bone is generally formed by intramembranous ossification. Bone density mandible can be assessed from the trabecular pattern. In the elderly, the hormone cortisol affects bone formation through bone resorption by blocking calcium.  The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation of cortisol levels to mandibular bone density in elderly women and men. Materials and Methods: This study was an analytic survey, where the population was determined from secondary patient data in the form of 31 panoramic radiographs and 31 laboratory results of cortisol examination, the research sample was divided into two groups. The bone density of the mandible was assessed from the trabeculae of the neck condyles region of the right and left. Density assessment using the ImageJ software program on panoramic radiographs was an examination that is often done in dentistry. Results: This study showed that the lowest density was in the group of women over 60 years. The results of the t-test with the independent sample obtained a p-value of > 0.05, which indicated there is no significant difference. The negative correlation value indicated that the relationship that occurs is opposite, p-value <0.05 which indicated the lower bone density, the higher cortisol level. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, there was a correlation that with the increasing age of both women and men there was an increase in cortisol levels and a decrease in mandibular density.

Lateral cephalometric radiograph analysis on obstructive sleep apnea patients 阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停患者侧位头颅x线片分析

Objectives: This review article is aimed to investigate changes in anatomical factors in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients through means of a cephalometric radiograph, which covers relation and size. Review: This literature review used online databases (PubMed and Scopus) discussing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults aged 18-80 years, using cephalometric analysis, and several keywords such as “obstructive sleep apnea and cephalometry” were employed to do the literature search. The search was limited to full-text articles written in English and published during the 2011-2021 period. Articles were selected by complying with literature review guidelines. Conclusion: Dentists can detect OSA early through lateral radiograph, which is originally an early screening tool, by paying attention to patients’ position during exposure, irradiation condition (kV, mA and Sec) and patient position in OSA diagnosis in regards to hard and soft tissue being evaluated. The specific craniofacial morphological variable could be a reliable parameter in determining the existence of OSA.

The effectivity of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in dentigerous cyst management: a literature review 锥形束计算机断层扫描(CBCT)在牙本质囊肿治疗中的有效性:文献综述

Objectives: This review aims to understand the effectiveness of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in the management of dentigerous cysts by looking at the advantages and disadvantages based on the quality of the resulting radiographic images. Review: Based on the literature review that has been carried out on 10 journals were eliminated from 22 journals that had the criteria according to the topic but there was a duplication in the identification results of the initial 50 journals from Pubmed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and EuropePMC, with a range of 2012-2022 using the Boolean Operator Strategy with inclusion criteria developed from PICOS framework, it was found that the CBCT radiographic method is the most widely used method in the management of dentigerous cysts because of the predominance of advantages over disadvantages. This radiographic method is able to produce three-dimensional radiographic images without overlapping structures, distortions, and amplifications at a low cost, although it has weaknesses. Conclusion: CBCT 3D may assess dentigerous cyst lesions effectively by taking into account several considerations and the accuracy of the SOP in its use. This radiography method can provide clear radiographic images without structural overlap, distortion, and amplification at a low cost to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment plan despite the drawbacks as a new result of development technologies in dental radiography.

Interprocessus distances based on gender using panoramic radiographs 利用全景x光片测量基于性别的突间距离

Objectives: This research is aimed do find out the differences of interprocessus distances between males and females using panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: This research is using observational analytic with cross sectional study design. Secondary data was taken from 96 panoramic radiographs consisting of 48 males and 48 females, from RSKGM-P Universitas Airlangga. Measurements were carried out using ImageJ Software by 3 observers. The measurement results were then analyzed by independent t-test and the inter-measuring reliability was tested using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) on IBM SPSS software. Results: The result showed that the significance value (2-tailed) of interprocessus distances measurement on males and females was <0.05 in both regions. Reliability test of inter-observer using ICC obtained the overall measurement results was more than 0.75 which means excellent reliability. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the interprocessus distances on males and females as measured by panoramic radiographs.
目的:本研究旨在利用全景x线片了解男性与女性间突距离的差异。材料与方法:本研究采用观察分析和横断面研究设计。次要数据取自96张全景x线片,包括48名男性和48名女性,来自rskgmp Universitas Airlangga。测量由3名观测者使用ImageJ软件进行。计量结果采用独立t检验,计量间信度采用IBM SPSS软件内相关系数(Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, ICC)检验。结果:结果显示,在两个区域中,男性和女性的加工间距离测量的显著性值(双尾)均<0.05。采用ICC对观察者间进行信度检验,总体测量结果大于0.75,信度极佳。结论:用全景x线片测得的男性与女性股骨突间距离有显著差异。

The accuracy of extraoral periapical radiography on determining the working length in endodontic treatment: narrative review 口外根尖周x线摄影对确定根管治疗工作长度的准确性:叙述性回顾

Objectives: This review article is aimed to determine the accuracy of extraoral periapical radiography as a determinant of the working length in endodontic treatment and the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. Review: Endodontic treatment is a dental treatment for damages reaching the pulp which aims to maintain the tooth. One way to succeed in endodontic treatment is to determine an accurate working length. The working length can be determined by intraoral periapical radiography examination but some people are sensitive to intraoral film placement. The placement of film on periapical radiography extraorally is needed. Conclusion: The study showed that the extraoral periapical radiography had more than 75% accuracy in determining the working length depending on angulation used. This review concludes that extraoral periapical radiography can be used in patients who can not tolerate to intraoral film placement with an accuracy that is not significantly different from that of the intraoral periapical radiography but is not meant to be replaced intraoral periapical radiography.

One way to succeed in endodontic treatment is to determine an accurate working length. The working length can be determined by intraoral periapical radiography examination but some people are sensitive to intraoral film placement. The placement of film on periapical radiography extraorally is needed. \u0000Conclusion: The study showed that the extraoral periapical radiography had more than 75% accuracy in determining the working length depending on angulation used. Comparative analysis of impacted maxillary canine and dentigerous cyst diagnosis using panoramic and CBCT imaging 全景与CBCT对上颌阻生犬牙囊肿诊断的比较分析

Objectives: This report is aimed to compare diagnostic accuracy of impacted maxillary canine and dentigerous cyst in determining its dimension and position using panoramic and CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) imaging. Case Report: A 30-year-old woman was referred to Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology with the suspect of upper right impacted canine. She had chief complaint of swelling pain in the palate for ± 3 months. Panoramic showed 13 impacted superiorly to the maxillary sinus and surrounding with a radiolucent lesion attached on cementoenamel junction. However, panoramic has limitations in assessing the labio-palatal position of impacted canine and lesion extension. CBCT revealed the tooth located closer to palate and no sign of direct contact with sinus. The radiolucent lesion has destructed anteroposterior aspect of cortical plate which explain the reason of swelling and pain. Conclusion: Precise dimension and position are important to avoid mistakes since impacted maxillary canine accompanied with dentigerous cyst required invasive management. In our case, panoramic and CBCT contributed to guide the diagnosis and help the referrer determining the exact site of surgery.

Alternative tools as a guide for measuring the vertical dimensions of teeth on periapical radiographs 在根尖周x线片上测量牙齿垂直尺寸的替代工具

Objectives: This research is aimed to find out the advantages of alternative tools as a guide for measuring the vertical dimensions of teeth on periapical radiographs and comparing the lengths of vertical dimensions of teeth on periapical radiographs with the actual lengths. Materials and Methods: This research is using analytical observational study with a cross-sectional study design. The research data were primary data from 30 periapical radiographs of two maxillary central incisors, which were photographed using a periapical projection with bisecting technique and a periapical film that had been attached with wire on the outer layer of the film wrap. The data were analyzed by a paired T-Test using SPSS software. Results: The p-value of ALT (Actual Length of the Tooth)  for tooth 11 was 0.53 and for tooth 21 was 0.140. These results show a p-value > 0.05. Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference between the calculation of tooth length on periapical radiographs using alternative tools and the calculation of actual tooth length so that alternative tools can be used as a guide for measuring the vertical dimensions of teeth on periapical radiographs.

Analysis of peri-implant tissue post-implantation using periapical radiograph: a scoping review 根尖周围x线片对种植体周围组织植入后的分析:范围回顾

Objectives: This review article is aimed to review various studies evaluating changes in peri-implant height and bone density post-implantation using periapical radiographs. Review: This scoping review was carried out according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis for Scoping Review (PRISMA-Scr) by reviewing literatures related to the evaluation of peri-implant bone post-implantation using periapical radiographs. PRISMA-ScR is a guide for writing a scoping review to increase the relevance and transparency of methodological and research findings. Literature searches were performed on PubMed NCBI, Science Direct, EBSCOHost, and Clinicalkey databases with the keywords “((dental implant) AND (periapical radiograph)) AND (peri-implant) OR (alveolar bone))”. Literature screening was carried out based on the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria that have been set in journals published in 2016-2020. A total of 18 eligible studies were included in this study. The data from the included studies was then synthesized, and the literatures were reviewed. Conclusion: Peri-implant bone generally experiences a decrease in height (marginal bone loss) and an increase in density during the process of bone adaptation to functional loading. The design and placement techniques of the implants have an impact on the extent of the change in bone height.

Multiple hypercementosis – a case report of an incidental finding on panoramic radiograph 多发性积血过多-一个偶然发现的全景x线报告1例

Objectives: This case report is aimed to describe radiographic features of multiple hypercementosis in an incidental case. Case Report: A 38-year-old man came to the Dental Hospital of Padjadjaran University with a complaint that he had lost some of his teeth and wanted to make dentures because he found it difficult to chew food. Then the patient was referred for a radiographic examination, the results of a panoramic radiograph found abnormalities in the form of thickening of the cementum at the apex of the remaining teeth. The teeth were in vital condition and there were no clinical signs. Conclusion: Based on the examination results, it was concluded that the panoramic radiograph showed excessive cementum thickening and root enlargement on the remaining teeth. This case leads to a radiological diagnosis suspect of multiple hypercementosis or cementum hyperplasia.
