Mach-Zehnder interferometers were fabricated from suspended membrane photonic crystal waveguides. Transmission spectra were measured and device operation was shown to be in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Lasing near 1300 nm in microdisks with InAs quantum dot active regions is reported for the first time. The microdisks were optically pumped at room temperature, and lasing occurred in devices that are 2.5 /spl mu/m in diameter and larger.

High power operation of electroabsorption modulators 电吸收调制器的高功率运行

In this paper we characterize temperature distribution in an electroabsorption modulator. A self-consistent opto-electro-thermal model is developed that accurately predicts thermal runaway in unoptimized EAM structures. Optimized structures with improved thermal design achieve high power operation with a record damage free power dissipation level in excess of 300 mW. In conclusion, using a thermoreflectance imaging technique, surface temperature measurement of active electroabsorption modulators is acquired.

Coherent addition of N fiber lasers using fiber couplers has been investigated for N=2, 4, and 8. As N increases, higher addition efficiency can be obtained due to suppression of sideband excitation by lineshape narrowing.

We report a new label-free biosensor system for protein interaction characterization. The system consists of a VCSEL, a plastic guided mode resonant filter, and a pin detector. The sensor has high sensitivity and ultra compactness, consumes low power, and can be fabricated in 2D arrays.

Two dimensional electro-optic sampling allows a target's scattered terahertz field to be measured. By obtaining multiple projection images we have performed the reconstruction of three dimensional targets with millimeter resolution.

Remarkably, there exists optimum coupler access waveguide widths which give minimum imbalance. Low excess loss is also achieved at the optimum width. These model results are supported by simulations, and experimental data from InP/InGaAsP couplers.
