Seven-functional-layer 3D photonic crystals with midgap wavelength at 1.55 /spl mu/m were fabricated with a layer-by-layer approach. We employed e-beam lithography to align and define the pattern, reactive-ion-etching to transfer the pattern, and spin-on-dielectrics to planarize the surface. Four such cycles were sufficient to complete the fabrication.

Coupling of radiation to /spl Gamma/ point photonic crystal resonances is explored through photoluminescence measurements. Photoluminescence from a quantum well embedded in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is enhanced by resonant fields. Experiments and simulations are compared.

We propose a new concept of "in-plane proportional hetero photonic crystals (PCs)" to obtain optimum performance of PC-based devices at multiple wavelengths. Ultrasmall channel add/drop device is successfully demonstrated based on the concept.

In this study, numerical experiments of three-photon ionization of He/sup +/ are performed. He/sup +/ is chosen over He because it is easy to prepare (by optical field ionization) and its 1s - 2s transition (40.8 eV) is close to the two-photon resonance of the 13th harmonics of a Ti:sapphire laser. Moreover, the exact solution can be delivered for this hydrogenlike system. We solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation numerically using the Peaceman-Rachford method. Results show that this process is an attractive candidate for the observation of a third-order nonlinear optical effect and even above-threshold ionization in the XUV range.

Recent advances in the generation of attosecond-duration electromagnetic pulses demand the development of methods to measure them. The combination of sources and measurement technology provides an important set of tools for the study of electron dynamics in matter of all kinds. I survey several recent proposals for attoseconds metrology, and compare their efficacy and range of applicability.
