Given the serious crisis of the European steel industry between 1974 and 1986, the Member States of the European Economic Community allocated a large amount of public resources to avoid the bankruptcy of major steel undertakings and to facilitate restructuring of the sector. In this regard, what the Spanish government did in relation to the steel aids was no exception. The main difference between the Spanish and European Community steel policies was not so much on the amount of the public resources but rather on the use of them in the restructuring process, especially since the 1980s. So while in the EEC steel aids were granted only in exchange for the elimination of surplus capacity, in Spain not adjustment was made until its accession to the European Communities on 1 January 1986.

This article analyses the female labour participation rates of Laujar de Andarax (Almería) and Úbeda (Jaén), both in Andalusia, in the mid-eighteenth century, representative locations of manufacturing activity linked to wool textile in the South of Spain. A database was composed including 12,195 inhabitants using the records of the Ensenada Cadastre of 1751-1752. The impact of the demand factors was established: A local economy with a relatively stronger presence of the secondary and tertiary sector, especially the textile sector; and the supply factors: life cycles, marital status, number of children, occupation and age of husbands. This study concludes that the female activity rates were 54.2% in Laujar, and 27.4% in Úbeda, and the 2 most important occupations were in the textile industry and domestic service. The local perspective shows that demand factors had a strong influence.

The characteristics of the internal market trading networks, the foreign trade policy and the low wage levels were some of the circumstances that determined the access to food in the Spanish cities at the beginning of the 20th century. For the impact of the trade policy, the prices in the major peninsular cities in 1909-1913 are compared with the prices of Gibraltar and with some of the main cities round the world, such as Madrid in1925. To assess the effects of the trade problems, the prices of each Spanish city in 1909-1913 are compared with the one combined with the minimum prices of all of them. The possibilities of accessing the consumption patterns of each city in 1964-1965 are compared with the prices and wages in the years before the First World War.
