The generically-called Tourist Information Offices were a key element in the promotion of tourism in Spain in the first third of the 20th century. These non-profit entities and with little financing emerged mainly from private initiative to promote the tourism development of their locality or region. In spite of being treated with certain indifference by public authorities, these associations published periodic newsletters that were tourist references of the time. They published and spread posters of the events in their localities. They provided free information to the tourists and they organised tours, conferences, exhibitions, events, and congresses. In addition, they repeatedly collaborated with the authorities and the business sector involved, in order to improve access, transport, and accommodation in Spain.

This study examines the development of the Andorran banking industry during the second half of the 20th century. Not having established any legal tender has historically meant the free movement of currency in the country. In this context, this work proposes that the possibility of maintaining Eurocurrency deposits in Andorran banks would have been one of its main competitive advantages to attract Spanish and French capital. To test this hypothesis, we compare the arbitrage opportunities shown by the major Eurocurrencies against the Spanish peseta and the French franc in the different exchange regimes experienced by both countries. The results show that, in all cases, Eurocurrency deposits in Andorran banks were more profitable than onshore deposits. At the same time, the opportunity cost of not moving capital to Andorra would have been higher for Spanish investors than for the French ones.

Proto-industrialisation theory originally combined the development of rural industry with a set of changes in demographic behaviour patterns. In Spain, with some exceptions, these changes have not been studied in the proto-industrial areas. There are contributions that analyse some population factors regarding the manufacturing activity, but in no case the analysis has been directed towards finding the set of hypotheses derived from the proto-industrialisation theories. The present work focuses on the verification of some of these assumptions. The issue is approached from the study of a relevant local case: the Valencian textile region of Alcoi. Using the aggregative method, an analysis is made of the changes in fertility and marriage to check whether they conform to those that Mendel, Medick and others attribute to the demographics of the proto-industrial areas.

The aim of this paper is to show a source for the study of consumption of goods in Spain: the data from the ‘impuesto de puertas’ (municipal tax) in 1835-1839, that are included in the ‘Diccionario de Madoz’ (Madoz Dictionary), as well as the methodology used to build shopping baskets from these. To this end, an estimate is made of the urban consumption structure of two cities in the South of the Iberian Peninsula, Jaén and Granada. The results seem to be in line with that found in other cities, such as Valladolid and Alcoy, using other sources.
