PurposeOnline learning is well-known by its flexibility of learning anytime and anywhere. However, how behavioral patterns tied to learning anytime and anywhere influence learning outcomes are still unknown.Design/methodology/approachThis study proposed concepts of time and location entropy to depict students’ spatial-temporal patterns. A total of 5,221 students with 1,797,677 logs, including 485 on-the-job students and 4,736 full-time students, were analyzed to depict their spatial-temporal learning patterns, including the relationships between identified patterns and students’ learning performance.FindingsAnalysis results indicate on-the-job students took more advantage of anytime, anywhere than full-time students. Students with a higher tendency for learning anytime and a lower level of learning anywhere were more likely to have better outcomes. Gender did not show consistent findings on students’ spatial-temporal patterns, but partial findings could be supported by evidence in neural science or by cultural and geographical differences.Research limitations/implicationsA more accurate approach for categorizing position and location might be considered. Some findings need more studies for further validation. Finally, future research can consider connections between other well-known performance predictors (such as financial situation, motivation, personality and major) and the type of learning patterns.Practical implicationsThe findings gained from this study can help improve the understandings of students’ learning behavioral patterns and design as well as implement better online education programs.Originality/valueThis study proposed concepts of time and location entropy to identify successful spatial-temporal patterns of on-the-job and full-time students.

PurposeMicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been proved to be a significant type of non-coding RNAs related to various human diseases. This paper aims to identify the potential miRNA–disease interactions.Design/methodology/approachA computational framework, MDIRM is presented to predict miRNAs-disease interactions. Unlike traditional approaches, the miRNA function similarity is calculated by miRNA–disease interactions. The k-mean method is further used to cluster miRNA similarity network. For miRNAs in the same cluster, their similarities are enhanced, as the miRNAs from the same cluster may be reliable. Further, the potential miRNA–disease association is predicted by using recommend method.FindingsTo evaluate the performance of our model, the fivefold cross validation is implemented to compare with two state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results indicate that MDIRM achieves an AUC of 0.926, which outperforms other methods.Originality/valueThis paper proposes a novel computational method for miRNA–disease interaction prediction based on recommend method. Identifying the relationship between miRNAs and diseases not only helps us better understand the disease occurrence and mechanism through the perspective of miRNA but also promotes disease diagnosis and treatment.

PurposePalmprint recognition is a very interesting and promising area of research. Much work has already been done in this area, but much more needs to be done to make the systems more efficient. In this paper, a multimodal biometrics system based on fusion of left and right palmprints of a person is proposed to overcome limitations of unimodal systems.Design/methodology/approachFeatures are extracted using some proposed multi-block local descriptors in addition to MBLBP. Fusion of extracted features is done at feature level by a simple concatenation of feature vectors. Then, feature selection is performed on the resulting global feature vector using evolutionary algorithms such as genetic algorithms and backtracking search algorithm for a comparison purpose. The benefits of such step selecting the relevant features are known in the literature, such as increasing the recognition accuracy and reducing the feature set size, which results in runtime saving. In matching step, Chi-square similarity measure is used.FindingsThe resulting feature vector length representing a person is compact and the runtime is reduced.Originality/valueIntensive experiments were done on the publicly available IITD database. Experimental results show a recognition accuracy of 99.17 which prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed multimodal biometrics system than other unimodal and multimodal biometrics systems.

PurposeSince the development of web 2.0, there has been a paradigm shift in methods of knowledge sharing. This has equally impacted on techniques of research evaluation. Many scholars have argued that the social utilization of research is hardly reflected in the traditional methods of research evaluation. The purpose of this paper is to determine the research impact of Library and Information Science (LIS) journals using Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar (GS) and then examine whether there is a correlation between their citations and altmetric attentions.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is an attempt to contribute to this discussion with focus on the field of LIS. This paper adopted descriptive informatics to analyze LIS journals. The paper extracted citation data from WoS, Scopus and GS, and altmetric attentions from 85 LIS journals indexed by WoS. Further, 18 journals with high altmetric attention were identified, while 9 of these maintained consistent presence in the three databases used.FindingsFindings show that of these databases, citation data from GS was found to have a high correlation with altmetric attention, while the other two databases maintained moderate correlations with altmetric attention. The paper also found a positive but non-significant correlation between citation scores and altmetric attention in the nine journals that maintained consistent presence in the three databases.Practical implicationsThe findings of this paper will be useful to librarians in selection of relevant journals for their libraries and also will assist authors in the choice of publication outlets for their papers particularly when considering journals that have visibility and research impact.Originality/valueThe originality of the paper lies on empirical evidences from the citation and altmetric data extracted from the databases used for the paper.

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the personality traits (agreeableness, openness to experience, extraversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism) of library and information science (LIS) students in Pakistan. The difference among the personality traits of LIS students toward their information needs and seeking behavior is also analyzed.Design/methodology/approachTwo instruments, namely, BFI scale and a self-structured instrument were used to collect the data. Kruskal–Wallis test was applied to find out differences among the personality traits of LIS students toward their information needs and seeking behavior.FindingsFindings of the study revealed that out of 320 respondents, 186 possessed openness to experience, while only 7 possessed extraversion personality trait. Moreover, the students having extraversion personality trait were, generally, more concerned toward information needs. On the other hand students having conscientious trait were increasingly more seekers of information. Overall, the conscientiousness was identified as the most suitable personality trait for LIS students. A significant difference was also observed among all the personality traits of LIS students.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study will help in the identification of LIS individual’s personality. The library managers can use these personality traits for the selection of suitable library professionals for their libraries.Originality/valueThis study can be valuable for the induction of new library professionals and also help managers in assigning the duties based on these personality traits.

PurposeThe study aims to discuss the special needs-centric information delivery as a new genre of the academic library services. It also sheds light on the assistive technology used to help blind or visually impaired (BVI) students to access the available digital contents and use online services conveniently. A particular emphasis placed on gaining some insights into BVIs’ perceptions towards the orientation and assistance offered by the access service librarians, as well as any experience in using assistive educational technology for reading and information access.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used semi-structured interview survey to gather the necessary data from 35 BVI university students drawn from the Special Needs Services (SNS) Unit at the UAE University. The interview was concerned with use of library e-resources and online services for doing their assignments, easy-to-use facilities to access the e-resources and main challenges facing them in communicating with the librarians.FindingsThe findings revealed that the BVI students considered that the university library does not answer their needs for getting access to digital content and using online services adequately.Practical implicationsThe Main Library should cooperate closely with the SNS Unit to get the most benefits from their experience in the BVI-devoted services to develop an efficient library information discovery and delivery to this student group.Originality/valueThere is scarcity of scholarly studies on the pedagogical and information acquisition challenges facing the BVI university students in the UAE higher education. This is the first research study that tackles the experience of the BVI students in using the academic library.

PurposeOwing to the huge volume of documents available on the internet, text classification becomes a necessary task to handle these documents. To achieve optimal text classification results, feature selection, an important stage, is used to curtail the dimensionality of text documents by choosing suitable features. The main purpose of this research work is to classify the personal computer documents based on their content.Design/methodology/approachThis paper proposes a new algorithm for feature selection based on artificial bee colony (ABCFS) to enhance the text classification accuracy. The proposed algorithm (ABCFS) is scrutinized with the real and benchmark data sets, which is contrary to the other existing feature selection approaches such as information gain and χ2 statistic. To justify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the support vector machine (SVM) and improved SVM classifier are used in this paper.FindingsThe experiment was conducted on real and benchmark data sets. The real data set was collected in the form of documents that were stored in the personal computer, and the benchmark data set was collected from Reuters and 20 Newsgroups corpus. The results prove the performance of the proposed feature selection algorithm by enhancing the text document classification accuracy.Originality/valueThis paper proposes a new ABCFS algorithm for feature selection, evaluates the efficiency of the ABCFS algorithm and improves the support vector machine. In this paper, the ABCFS algorithm is used to select the features from text (unstructured) documents. Although, there is no text feature selection algorithm in the existing work, the ABCFS algorithm is used to select the data (structured) features. The proposed algorithm will classify the documents automatically based on their content.
