In this paper, I analyse the role of prefixation in the Old Church Slavonic (OCS) verbal aspect system. For my analysis, I first need to establish how the aspect of OCS verbs can be determined. To that end, I use a combination of methods: morphological categorization, grammatical profiling and semantic analysis. My analysis shows that, although prefixation in most cases equals perfectivization in OCS, it does not create aspect pairs like suffixation does. This is mainly because of the fact that many simplex verbs in OCS are anaspectual, even when prefixed formations exist.

Psychoanalysis spread earlier and faster in Russia than in Western Europe. According to the author, there are three main reasons for this. First, psychoanalysis is based on the fictional structure of patients’s narratives. In a literary-centric country such as Russia, the ‘literary character’ of psychoanalysis quickly attracts the Russian intelligentsia. Secondly, the formal similarities between literary and psychoanalytic language, and the close connection between the poetic word and the rhetoric of the unconscious, contribute to rendering Freudian language particularly familiar in Russia. Thirdly, the Silver Age, with its attention to the symbol, the ‘other’, and the double, contributes to increasing interest in the theory of the unconscious. This will continue until after the October Revolution as the state relies on psychoanalysis to help forge the new Soviet citizen. This ‘alliance’, however, is short-lived, and Freudian psychoanalytic theory will be ostracized from the 1930s up to the end of the Soviet regime.

The lyric poem Fra Andželiko (1912) was inspired by the vivid impressions Nikolaj Gumilëv gained during his Italian tour in the very same year. The work should be seen in its context that acts as a background for the gumilevian perception of the artistic civilization of the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello, Benvenuto Cellini, Michelangelo are here awakened, described and matched to the eponymous character. This article aims to reconstruct the image of Italy, of Poetry and to depict the poet through the verses of the poem.

Gerasim Zelić (1752-1828) è una delle figure più emblematiche del panorama culturale serbo a cavallo fra Sette e Ottocento. Archimandrita del monastero serbo-ortodosso di Krupa, diplomatico e scrittore, dal 1794 al 1811 Zelić ricoprì la carica di Vicario generale dei serbi di Dalmazia e, come tale, fu uno degli attori principali degli eventi legati alla polemica confessionale che al tempo agitava la regione. La sua autobiografia, intitolata Žitije e pubblicata a Budapest nel 1823, lo colloca inoltre fra i protagonisti di un’epoca cruciale per la nascita della nuova letteratura serba. Seguendo un approccio multidisciplinare, i saggi raccolti nel volume Gerasim Zelić e il suo tempo analizzano la vicenda di Gerasim Zelić, il suo coinvolgimento negli eventi legati alla polemica confessionale in Dalmazia e la sua attività letteraria, allargando la discussione all’epoca in cui visse l’archimandrita serbo. The monograph focuses on a special type of collocations–Support, or Light, Verb Constructions (SVCs). SVCs consist of a semantically reduced verb together with a noun (as the direct object or embedded in a prepositional phrase) that conveys core lexical meaning to the combination. SVCs often vary cross-linguistically, with languages using different strategies to conceptualize the same denotative situations. This study in line with the principles of the Integrated Contrastive Model, aims firstly to offer a corpus-driven contrastive cognitive-semantic description of SVCs in Russian and Italian based on the Construction Grammar model; and secondly to conduct a Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis of the use of Russian SVCs by Italian-speaking students. The findings of this study, in addition to its theoretical significance, may be useful in teaching Russian as a foreign language and could be of interest for lexicography.

I survey cases of contact-induced influence of Slavic and Baltic systems of prefixal perfectivization on Yiddish, Romani, Livonian and Istroromanian. I show that, although both matter and pattern borrowing of entire systems of Slavic or Baltic verbal prefixes is attested, grammatical aspectual categories similar to those of the donor languages do not arise in the contact languages, or develop in a way distinct from the donor languages (as in Istroromanian). This indicates that abstract grammatical oppositions such as “Slavic-style” aspect are immune to direct transfer in language contact.

This paper analyses the concessive connectives – like, for example, “Куда бы тебя ни занесло/где бы она ни была…” – introducing universal concessive conditional clauses from the point of view of Construction Grammar. The analysis aims to account for the lexical, morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic conditions to be realized in order to show the phrasematic nature of this group of conjunctions. In doing so we address also the role of the expletive negation in this construction, which is of crosslinguistic relevance.

The paper illustrates the reasons that lead Serbian philologist Pavle Solarić not to finish his editing of Gerasim Zelić’s autobiography Žitije, which was originally supposed to be published by the Venetian typography of Teodosio. It is generally assumed that ill health and ultimately death prevented Solarić from finishing his job; however, the paper speculates that Solarić may have set his editing work aside in order to give priority to other editorial activities, as well as to foster his social connections with Frederick North and with members of the Shelley Circle.

The paper summarizes the results of a research project dedicated to Serbian archimandrite Gerasim Zelić (1758-1828), one of the main protagonists of the interconfessional polemic that engulfed the Serbian Orthodox community living in Dalmatia between the 17th and 19th centuries. Firstly, the paper describes the activities that were carried out during the project, particularly the digitalization and on-line publication of a corpus of manuscript documents connected to Zelić. Secondly, it presents the results of a historical and culturological analysis conducted on the aforementioned documents.

The term preverb stacking (PS) designates the co-occurrence on one verbal base of two or more prefixes bearing spatial, aspectual, or quantificational meanings. The phenomenon is especially productive in Slavic but is also attested in other Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages. This paper provides a first attempt at a cross-linguistic typology of PS. It will also pay attention to problems typical of Slavic (i.e. the interaction of PS and the aspectual value of the verb in terms of the typical Slavic perfective vs. imperfective dichotomy). Special attention will be paid to Bulgarian.
