Research attention has been focused on the public sphere and librarianship recently, generating disagreement, even controversy. This reflects long-running debates in LIS and related fields. This is not a stale rehash: how we think about the public sphere and libraries is an indicator of libraries in democratic societies and how we position them. A compact account of affinity groupings around this research in LIS will precede an account of the controversy suggesting the question, are there still actually existing public spheres as Habermas deployed the term? The answer clarifies the controversy, and the paper will explore and draw conclusions from it.

The purpose of this paper is to relate individuals’ health information literacy (HIL) self-efficacy to their information technology (IT) use and health status. Using a large-scale field survey with 6,160 valid respondents from undergraduates in a Chinese university, we found that individuals’ HIL self-efficacy was significantly related to some socio-demographics and lifestyle features, IT use, and health status. Meanwhile, some socio-demographics and lifestyle features and health status help identify low HIL self-efficacy individuals, while moderate daily IT use may improve HIL self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical implications, as well as limitations and future work, are also discussed.

Background: Human papillomaviruses (HPV) cause over 500 000 cervical cancers each year, most of which occur in low-resource settings. Human papillomavirus genotyping is important to study natural history and vaccine efficacy. We evaluated TypeSeq, a novel, next-generation, sequencing-based assay that detects 51 HPV genotypes, in 2 large international epidemiologic studies.
Methods: TypeSeq was evaluated in 2804 cervical specimens from the Study to Understand Cervical Cancer Endpoints and Early Determinants (SUCCEED) and in 2357 specimens from the Costa Rica Vaccine Trial (CVT). Positive agreement and risks of precancer for individual genotypes were calculated for TypeSeq in comparison to Linear Array (SUCCEED). In CVT, positive agreement and vaccine efficacy were calculated for TypeSeq and SPF10-LiPA.
Results: We observed high overall and positive agreement for most genotypes between TypeSeq and Linear Array in SUCCEED and SPF10-LiPA in CVT. There was no significant difference in risk of precancer between TypeSeq and Linear Array in SUCCEED or in estimates of vaccine efficacy between TypeSeq and SPF10-LiPA in CVT.
Conclusions: The agreement of TypeSeq with Linear Array and SPF10-LiPA, 2 well established standards for HPV genotyping, demonstrates its high accuracy. TypeSeq provides high-throughput, affordable HPV genotyping for world-wide studies of cervical precancer risk and of HPV vaccine efficacy.

Abstract:This article seeks to contribute to the study of fiction as a source of everyday life information by investigating Young Adult Literature (YAL) as a source of information on sexuality for young women readers. Through the examination of the reading experiences and practices of 11 young women, this article identifies major informational topics on sexuality that can be found in YAL as well as the unique qualities of fiction as an information source on sexuality. Ultimately, this article argues that the type of information that can be found in YAL can help fill in the gaps of traditional sex education and contribute to the sexual well-being of young people. In accounts of identity and making sense of professional roles, time is a linguistic resource that librarians and pharmacists—members of information-rich professions—draw upon. Accounts of time organize narratives of professionalism, make sense of new and evolving roles, frame a profession’s future, and create meaning from the profession’s past.

This article compares cloud service contracts with records management and archival needs to determine whether or not those needs are met by currently available, boiler-plate contracts. It finds that, in general, the requirements of storing and preserving authentic records are not met by current cloud service agreements. It ends by proposing a checklist of requirements for recordkeeping professionals to utilize in negotiating or choosing contracts to better support the needs of authentic records in the cloud.

More and more information is “going to the cloud,”including records and archives. This article focuses on understanding trust-in-cloud solutions from an archivist’s perspective, exploring whether cloud computing has changed the archivist’s role and how archivists respond to cloud-related problems and challenges. Twelve archivists in Sweden were interviewed in Swedish. They describe changes in their role due to cloud computing and services in the domain of archival science. Their role has changed from being reactive to becoming proactive, guarding not only the organization’s needs and assets but also its archival records. Working pro-actively implies guaranteeing that requirements are updated and that contracts and agreements between the organization and cloud service provider are correct. The research shows that trust consists of several dimensions and cannot be easily achieved with technical solutions. Organizations’ risk-tolerance levels have also changed to take advantage of the benefits and savings that cloud services provide for organizations.
