The demand for knowledge workers is on the increase, yet little is known with regard to their career perceptions and attitudes. This article focuses on exploring the issues and factors affecting the career development of South African knowledge workers. Specialization and dual career ladders are required to ensure that the knowledge residing in the minds of knowledge workers is not lost. A survey was conducted to determine career development opportunities for knowledge workers in South Africa. The results revealed that knowledge workers are motivated through traditional means such as money, awards, and recognition, but place less emphasis on temporary assignments and mentoring than their counterparts from other countries. Organizations should leverage the knowledge contained in the minds of their knowledge workers to create a sustainable, competitive advantage.

A quantitative investigation of information science publications indexed in Web of Science by scholars affiliated with Canadian institutions was conducted for the period 1989 to 2008 as a follow-up to a 1991 study conducted by Chu and Wolfram. The findings reveal essentially linear growth in the number of contributions, as institutions housing library and information science programs contribute the most publications. The largest growth was observed in the area of information behaviour, where greater levels of author and inter-institutional co-authorship have been observed in recent years.

What is the experience of information seeking (IS) by leaders of a church in transition, as they seek the will of God for their church? In this ethnographic pilot study, I begin to create a picture of leaders’ information seeking, first for personal faith building and then for corporate decision making, and I consider the impact of new technologies on these processes. Religious IS did not differ significantly from other everyday-life information seeking (ELIS) experiences, except when subjects were acting in leadership roles. Prominent themes were theological diversity and prayer.

Over the last several years, public library boards in Canada, like most public bodies, have adopted a neoliberal marketization approach to their policy and decision-making processes. This approach is at odds with traditional professional practices of librarianship. This paper focuses on two competing approaches to public library board governance: neoliberalism and communitarianism. In the assessing of the discourse between these two models, it is contended that neoliberalism has instilled operational procedures and an organizational culture that are contrary to a spirit of positive public engagement, a spirit that should be the cornerstone of public library boards. In contrast, communitarianism, by providing a set of guiding principles, makes public library boards more accessible within their communities, and can therefore lead to the rediscovery of the public library board’s positive spirit of public engagement. Through a search for praxis, recommendations on how public library board trustees can maintain their dual responsibility of professional ethics of librarianship while remaining an integral part of their local community are proffered.

This study measures the service quality of university libraries of Pakistan from the user’s perspective. The data were collected (N = 1,473) from undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members of 22 Pakistani universities through a locally modified LibQUAL+ survey in Urdu. Library users rated 22 core survey items on a scale of 1 (low) to 9 (high) in terms of minimum acceptable service quality, desired service quality, and perceived service quality. Study findings indicate that libraries overall do not meet users’ minimum acceptable and desired levels of service quality. The zone of tolerance identified eight problematic services, most of which are related to the information control dimension. This study also indicates a wide gap between users’ perceptions and expectations of service quality.
