ABSTRACT The object of this article is to show that in recent times of crisis – notably in view of the repeated terrorist attacks that have taken place in France – a form of insidious backlash on feminism has operated through antifeminist appropriations of feminism by self-named French “decolonial intersectional feminists” whose antiracist stance and praxis leads them to sometimes distort and even betray the goals of feminism. Contrary to their purported use of intersectionality as a pluri-identity analytical tool, these “feminists” assign people to a single dominant primary identity, based either on their religion or the colour of their skin, which leads them to defend antifeminist views. 1

ABSTRACT Susan Faludi’s feminist classic Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women was first published in 1991, thirty-one years ago, and yet its message seems to resonate more clearly than ever. The current issue focuses on present-day Europe and the last few decades, covering a very wide spectrum. There are surveys of countries or their crucial sectors (Bulgaria, Italy and France). The social media are dealt with in a separate essay and various subchapters. The literary works studied include Ali Smith’s Summer and verbatim theatre. Prominent examples are Angela Merkel’s 1993 review of Backlash and the Spanish Manada case. In conclusion, an intergenerational dialogue highlights recent controversies and tries to find pathways forward.Part I of the Introduction argues that one of today’s major aspects of the patriarchal backlashes against women remains rooted in biological, deterministic socio-political constructions of women’s bodies, which aim to deprive women of their agency as human beings. After a critical discussion of the backlash concept, Part II briefly characterises the structure of the issue and the individual articles.

ABSTRACT In a dialogue, the authors discuss controversies in feminisms and their hopes for feminist futures. The first sections dismantle oppositional catfight narratives regarding feminisms and highlight the misogynist and transphobic cultural-political work they perform. Feminists and trans activists find common cause in resisting the subordination and control of womxn’s and trans persons’ bodies. Later sections outline an activist approach to doing feminisms online, while asking participants to keep the capitalist embeddedness of social media in mind. Body-positive activism and body neutrality are explored as strategies of resistance. Rather than adhering to a narrative of opposition, the authors advocate for acknowledging the common ground that shared vulnerability holds for community building and mobilising political agency. Healing and points of joy are sought in connection.

ABSTRACT This article is a response to the neoliberalist/right-wing populist backlashes in times of crisis and their reflection in the media, as well as the multidirectional crises that Europe is facing at the moment, most notably the war in Ukraine and the recent Covid-19 pandemic. I argue that these appeared as crises within crises, happening to an already socially precarious world, laying bare the shortcomings and deepening the multiple inequalities that already existed. I turn to the fictional representations of the discourses and practices which simultaneously explicate the problematic workings of today’s reality and provide tentative hope through literary imagination, employing the methods of feminist criticism and ecocriticism. Using Ali Smith’s novel Summer (2020) as an example, I draw attention to language and its agency to both construct a provisional reality, and to be deconstructed to reveal other agencies, i.e. the material workings of nature, bodies and seasons. I argue that Smith connects events, characters and temporalities in cyclical repetitions to interrogate the agenda of humanism, sociality, history and nature, presenting the pandemic as a global phenomenon which cannot be countered by individual choices, in a world that is connected on multiple scales that affect all lives, because of our material and transcorporeal connections.

ABSTRACT Globalisation has made it easier for progressive ideas to cross borders. Yet the same can be said about regressive ideologies. Under the guise of protecting local traditions, family rights and national identity, genderphobic discourses have spread in seemingly unrelated parts of the world. Bulgaria is a case in point: a powerful religious-nationalist-conservative front has formed against women’s, LGBT+ and ethnic minority rights. This article explores the roots of the anti-feminist movements in the USA, Russia, and Europe. It looks critically at a range of discourse strategies and manipulation techniques used by these movements. And it presents three examples from Bulgaria: the assault on the term “gender,” a seemingly benign pro-birth media campaign, and raising moral panic about the threat to the traditional family. Apparently, behind the anti-globalist, genderphobic campaigns, there are well coordinated global forces at work. Distorting and toxifying the meanings of words, appropriating human rights terms, strategic lying and manipulation have become the tools of a hybrid war meant to undermine democratic societies. The role of language in this process is crucial. So is the role of linguists, who need to approach these phenomena from a critical perspective.

ABSTRACT This article highlights the persistence and violence of rape culture not only insofar as it pertains to sexual aggression but also in reference to arguments used in court cases. The language and body language used by defence attorneys add to the psychological pain suffered by the victim in having to face her aggressor(s) and relive a traumatic experience. I will analyse some contemporary British and Spanish works of literature that bring to the fore the structural misogyny women face today. Louise Doughty’s novel Apple Tree Yard and Jordi Casanovas’s play Jauría (Wolfpack) are particularly explicit in their treatment of court cases concerning rape while drawing on certain characteristics of verbatim theatre. The gang rape and subsequent trials that are at the core of Wolfpack attracted international attention because they clearly signalled towards a persistent loathing of and disregard for women.

ABSTRACT Through a number of case studies, this article will conduct an analysis of the sometimes seemingly ubiquitous antifeminism, and even misogyny, in certain anglophone online spaces, and of their roots in older historical antifeminist discourses. It will also discuss how this patriarchal backlash is strategically presented by its proponents as an indicator of a crisis in contemporary masculinity, and to what extent it is part of a wider phenomenon of reaction against progressive advances, in both online and offline spaces.

ABSTRACT Angela Merkel’s review of Susan Faludi’s Backlash from 1993 is an illuminating document as regards her relationship with feminism as well as with the media. She wrote it as Minister for Women and Youth, when a central task was bringing East and West Germany again closer together. Twelve years later, during the decisive election campaign of 2005, Alice Schwarzer’s EMMA, a leading feminist magazine, reprinted the review in an effort to style Merkel into a feminist and so mobilise disappointed female voters. Nevertheless, almost to the last minute of her four terms as Germany’s first female Chancellor, Merkel notoriously refused public identification with feminism.

Victorian materialisms: approaching nineteenth-century matter

ABSTRACT In this introduction to the special issue Victorian Materialisms, the authors review the material turn in cultural and literary studies, foregrounding the necessity of more historical nuance. While new materialist accounts tend to stress the post-Enlightenment persistence of dualistic oppositions between nature and culture, humans and nonhumans, body and mind, the editors of this special issue argue that Victorian conceptions of matter reveal a wide range of materialisms that anticipate current new materialist interventions. Closer attention to nineteenth-century cultural, literary, philosophical, and scientific approaches to matter, the authors submit, uncovers not just anxiety about boundary breaches, but a widespread interest in material agency and the entanglement of animal, chemical, human, plant, and inorganic matter. The introduction suggests that a broader enquiry into Victorian materialisms beyond canonical figures and texts helps recuperate the pervasiveness and mundaneness of Victorian engagements with matter and material agency.

ABSTRACT This article offers a new reading of Mary Seacole’s autobiography from the perspective of material ecocriticism. The Black Atlantic origins of Seacole’s pharmacopoeia reveal a troubled, complex engagement with histories of medicine and cure, with local indigenous knowledges, and with the often-violent circulation of plants and people across the planet. Paying close attention to instances in the text when plants meld and move with humans, within and beyond the Atlantic medical complex, the article links together vegetal materiality and medical, botanical histories of slavery, the plantation, and resistant black ecologies. To foreground the vibrant plant-human encounters at work in the text, the article selects three plants from Seacole’s medicine chest and follows their routes across the Black Atlantic, articulating how Seacole used her pharmacopoeia to save white Anglo patients while inadvertently addressing the long histories of slavery and colonialism.
