Nous explorons dans cet article la maniere dont la « vie authentique » se constitue a travers un style de conscience norme, que la pratique de la litterature et de certains psychotropes conteste. Cette exploration se consacre plus precisement aux hallucinogenes dits « psychedeliques » et a The Wild Boys, que William S. Burroughs publie en 1971. Cette analyse comparee s’appuie sur la notion platonicienne de pharmakon, et sur la prise en compte des specificites neurophysiologiques de la litterature et des substances psychedeliques. Nous concluons en observant que l’usage que fait Burroughs de l’ekphrasis agit comme une drogue psychedelique, perturbant la conscience sequentielle habituelle et liberant la sensation et le desir des contraintes normatives de la production et de la reproduction promues a l’epoque moderne.

Starting with a reference to Anne Ollivier-Mellios’s work on magazines and intellectual networks, this article offers a review of modern/modernist periodical studies. Periodical studies have developed considerably in the US and Britain since the 1990s, mostly in relationship to the renewal of modernist studies—which moved from a study of modernism’s big names to a reflection on how and where modernism began, with a focus on “little magazines.” This article shows how dynamic this field of study is today, mentioning its connections to broader fields of research (including the history of the book and print studies, the history of the media, and cultural history), unveiling its characteristics and methodologies (such as interdisciplinary work, the question of the materiality of the printed object, the notion of networks, and the impact of the digitization of archives), and looking at its resources in the US, Britain, and France (current digital projects, learned societies, and main publications in periodical studies). It addresses the question of digitization and its technical, methodological, economic and political challenges, the current interest in “big magazines” and newspapers (as opposed to “little magazines” and “high culture”), and the recent move towards more collective, interdisciplinary work on periodicals that focuses less on just modernism.

Cet article vise a montrer que la bombe atomique a eu des effets psychotropes sur la conscience americaine. Il propose d’etendre la signification du terme « psychotrope » afin d’englober la tropologie de la bombe atomique et le tournant initie par l’apparition de la bombe au milieu du xxe siecle. L’analyse porte sur une variete d’exemples de « culture nucleaire » issus de la photographie, du cinema, de la television, du theâtre et des paysages des armes nucleaires, faisant emerger deux categories d’effets « psychedeliques » de la bombe atomique. Il s’agit d’abord d’identifier brievement quelques-uns des moyens par lesquels la bombe rend la conscience americaine plus receptive aux formes de conformite requises pour defendre l’usage des armes atomiques. L’article ensuite repere les moments les plus perturbateurs dans le psychedelisme de la bombe atomique, ces moments ou l’apparition de la bombe dans la culture populaire vire a l’absurde.

Cet article propose de reflechir a l’imbrication entre la narrativite et l’impact visuel de la peinture murale en quatre panneaux de l’artiste africain-americain Aaron Douglas (1899-1979) Aspects of Negro Life (1934). Douglas emploie certains elements des techniques du collage et du pastiche comme autant de structures narratives complexes pour creer une textualite visuelle, historique et ideologique modernisante. La serie peut alors etre « lue » intertextuellement, dans une pluralite d’espaces, une multiplicite de temporalites, simultanement et a plusieurs niveaux. Participant d’une vision politique et utopique, la serie integre de facon complexe le texte et l’image, le sens et la forme, et est au cœur meme d’une comprehension de la capacite de l’artiste a condenser l’essence du recit litteraire et historique en un texte visuel. Si la serie dejoue une lecture immediate, elle sollicite en meme temps le lecteur a plusieurs niveaux de lecture. Par un feuillete de rayons geometriques transparents et une gradation de cercles de couleur et de lumiere places sur des formes epurees, l’artiste entre simultanement en prise avec le verbal, l’ecrit et le visuel. Les motifs deviennent symboliques ou allegoriques en condensant le recit en une modalite de lecture unique, concentree, et cependant porteuse de sens. Le collage et le pastiche, chez Douglas, ont pour effet de rendre l’histoire noire americaine a la fois universelle et singuliere.
