This article aims to identify the contributions of Steve Reich’s music to sociology. His music reveals three main characteristics: it is made out of empirical material collected on the field; it is a theory of processes; it is a political and cultural act. Steve Reich’s music affects sociology on these three points: it reminds the sociologist of the nature of his craft and his commitment to the social world, questions his methods and practice; it even sheds light on his own concepts (in particular that of “process”). The author proposes to extract from Steve Reich’s compositional work some useful elements for the profession of sociologist.

In the mid-19th century, recreational opium use began to spread in America. Initially seen as an innocuous remedy, it soon morphed into a hobby—and a vice—for a select few via a newly imported establishment: the “Chinese” opium den. Seen as a source of potential moral decay and physical deterioration by mainstream hygienist discourse, the opium den was also a sanctuary and a home for its disciples. Caught between evolving notions of identity, community, morality and a scientific revolution in the making, the opium den briefly embodied the defining struggles of turn-of-the-century urban America.

In this extract from her 2012 unpublished manuscript, Les Intellectuels critiques aux Etats-Unis. 1913-1933. Chronique d’une generation oubliee, Anne Ollivier-Mellios offers insight into the rich transatlantic exchanges between American and French intellectuals in the immediate aftermath of the First World War and in the continuity of peace activism. Through personal letters and published editorials, she maps the attempts to set up international organizations, and she records how French and American radical or liberal intellectuals struggled to find a common definition of the commitment, role and means of political action of the artist or writer. Ultimately she suggests that these earlier transatlantic debates informed local achievements but also the rifts and failures in New York’s intellectual circles in the 1930s.

This study focuses on the intellectual process by which historian Howard Zinn conducted research about the bombings of Royan in 1945. It looks at the historian’s published work on the topic in both English and French and considers the political motivations which prompted him to look into this particular event. The uniqueness of this investigation is due to the personal dimension of this military episode because Zinn served as a US Air Force bombardier during the war. Yet it is only in the specific context of the 1960s that he realized the historical value of his experience.
