Cynthia Bourgeault is a prolific author and workshop leader deeply committed to Christianity's apparent need to rediscover its integrity, and deep heart wisdom. This heuristic phenomenological contribution documents some of the author's personal experiences and resonances with wisdom themes from Bourgeault's books. The main theme is that Bourgeault's works reveal a transcendent level of consciousness that runs through wisdom traditions in general and Christianity in particular. This is evident in her wisdom teaching, especially through transformations of consciousness, universal heart awakening, and Centering Prayer. Her committed contribution to teaching and spreading the rediscovery of the wisdom path has valuable future implications for healing and holiness.

This article delves into the intersection of race, economic ideology, and Christian identity formation within the context of Black preaching to articulate what is referred to as the “neoliberal homiletic.” The neoliberal homiletic refers to the uncritical adoption of economic, ideological concepts within preaching practices, leading to a reshaping of theological goals and individual identity as examined in the context of the Black church. Preaching influenced by economic ideas constructs a Christian identity that aligns with market values and reinforces economic systems of oppression. Despite these challenges, a hopeful path forward is found in a return to historical traditions of Black preaching, which emphasize community solidarity, resistance to oppression, and a theological preference for the poor. Reclaiming these traditions can empower the Black church to address the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized communities and counteract the pervasive influence of economism.

This article explores the richness of African American preaching. It contends that preaching is central in African American worship and interweaves aspects of African traditional religion. It reviews certain theological and rhetorical characteristics of Black preaching, such as poetic storytelling, call and response, rhythm, and musical sound. This article further contends that the soul of Black preaching is both an art and a discipline. It is also a historical, life-giving, and empowering entity, reflecting a rich tapestry of culture, communication, inspiration, faith, and empowerment within the African American religious tradition.

By delving into traditions of Black preaching and the historical context of the Black church's activism, the article strives to illustrate the benefits of a more collectivistic approach. Finally, it outlines potential strategies to encourage a return to collectivism, as well as means to counter the persistent structural inequities within the Black community. This examination adds to the discourse on the prevailing influence of religious institutions on societal change and equity.

The reflection seeks to offer alternative thoughts on a “search for the soul of Black preaching.” Casual allusion is made to experience, music, Scripture, literature, scholarship, context, and jurisprudence, for clues as to how and where the soul of Black preaching might be found. A central suggestion is that “Black preaching” is not simply a contemporary racial or ethnic construct, but a timeless provisional and contextual divine warrant from the beginning of creation to proclaim liberation from chaos, profess divine truth to power, and offer enduring hope in light of historical injustices.
