John Mayne wrote extensively on results-based management. While his thinking evolved, some key tenets remained. He emphasized the importance of leadership in managing for results. In this article, we elicit his understanding of sound results-based management and the role of leadership. Mayne argued that a salient task for leaders was building and sustaining an evaluative culture, wherein the organization uses and learns from performance information. The authors analyzed his recommendations for leaders and grouped them into four different types of leadership roles. These roles concern setting a results course of expectations, managing operations, managing change, and managing people and systems.

This practice note describes how listening is an essential practice and can be part of honoring relationality and ceremony in Indigenous research and evaluation. Through a research project assessing the quality and availability of culturally attuned services for Native survivors of gender-based violence, the authors describe how they put being a good relative into practice by centering Indigenous values and protocol while utilizing western methodologies. Aligning with the Eastern Door, this note offers insight into the incorporation of Indigenous approaches into how evaluators honored and engaged with the research process.

Systematic evaluation contributes to a strong governance function that leads to improvement and accountability in school systems. Evaluation is integral to the policy development cycle. Elected school board trustees in River City school division were challenged in their governance role by a lack of evaluative feedback on policies. A four-step change process was created to guide the development of an evaluation framework to address the gap and foster an evaluative culture within the board. The change process described could be applied by other school divisions to enhance their policy evaluation function. More broadly, the importance of careful planning and the benefits of a participatory approach to evaluation are integral pieces to any change effort.

Empowerment Evaluation (EE) aims to teach program stakeholders, including beneficiaries, how to conduct their own evaluations. In this mixed methods research project we sought to investigate and formally document the involvement of youth in EE of programs targeting youth. Phase 1 surveyed evaluators about the extent to which they involve youth in EE. Phase 2 involved interviews with evaluators and explored what factor(s) facilitate and hinder: the involvement of youth in EE of programs targeting youth. The findings show that youth are involved to some extent in EE, and there are factors that can facilitate and hinder the involvement of youth in EE.

In this practice note, the authors reflect on their experiences evaluating a three-year behavioural health equity initiative that was conducted with eight community coalitions located across the southeastern United States. The main focus of the practice note is on the challenges the authors experienced in their evaluation, most of which were largely outside their control: unpredictable funding cycle, complexity of problem, level of local knowledge, level of data literacy, and collaborative approach not realized. While they acknowledge the complexity of behavioural health equity issues, they conclude with four key implications for practice that they note can help relieve the stress of some of the challenges they experienced.
