Edward Westermann tells two parallel stories of intoxication: one about the physical act of drinking and the social role of drunkenness, and another about the metaphorical intoxication of being drunk on power. While they at times veer apart, they entwine throughout the book to contribute to our understanding of belonging in a hypermasculine community. ABSTRACT:The Holocaust is associated primarily with death camps, but mass executions alongside crematoria were an equal way to exterminate Jews during World War II. This article presents the perspective of Jews who survived the shootings. On the basis of ninety-one personal accounts of people who survived under the corpses, I describe their experience: the circumstances of the massacre, falling into the grave, getting out of it, and returning to the living. In the text, I pose the following questions: what can we learn by analyzing this experience? Does it bring anything new to our knowledge of the Holocaust? Did those once "buried alive" know something that other witnesses do not say? The article complicates received understandings of how, precisely, people died during the Holocaust; and challenges the common assumption in the scholarship that those who survived were all "irreversibly changed."

abstract:A strict ban on organized Jewish activities apart from those of a limited number of religious bodies, coupled with the state monopoly on all publishing, simplified the Soviet Union's control over Holocaust-related publication. The appearance of any such work was an idiosyncratic event, associated with concurrent political and cultural contexts and official agendas. The relatively liberal climate of the first post-Stalinist decade raised the possibility of such events. Soviet publication of both the diary of Anne Frank and Masha Rolnikaite's I Must Tell reflected in part foreign policy considerations, but each played a rather different role in the Soviet cultural sphere. Anne Frank's diary—not reprinted for three decades—would be referred to as, and possibly read only as, an important anti-fascist narrative with distant relevance to wartime events in the Soviet Union. Masha Rolnikaite (Rolnik), a survivor of the Vilnius ghetto, would become a widely published belletrist "Soviet Anne Frank."
