ABSTRACTThe multi-layered cultural and archaeological rock-cut settlement of Taşkale in Turkey is a large and complex site to manage. It includes various tangible and intangible values such as historic rock-cut granaries, traditional houses, Manazan Caves, and volcanic formations. Although the settlement largely preserves its historic fabric and has the potential to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL), it does not yet have a sustainable, holistic management plan. Therefore, this paper reflects the results of field studies and individual collaboration with various stakeholders to develop a management plan proposal for the settlement that will ensure its sustainable conservation, strengthen ‘communities of practice’ and ‘identity’, and be a starting point for its inclusion in the WHL. The resulting management plan proposal includes condition surveys, analyses, interviews, and action plans. It is an example of sustainable management decisions and future developments of the site that faced the problem of abandonment.KEYWORDS: Management plansrock-cut heritage sitesTaşkaleUNESCOworld heritage list AcknowledgementsWe thank the local community living in Taşkale for their constructive comments during the field studies and for their support and cooperation.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1. g l endi li l endi,博士。

ABSTRACT Sweden has some of the best-preserved Bronze Age rock art in the world, with more than 20,000 rock art sites. While there is no clear evidence indicating the origin of this tradition, in the World Heritage area of Tanum some of the rock art is enhanced with red colour. However, the practice flattens the more complex time-depth of the engravings and cements faulty interpretations, thus alternative ways for visualising the rock art are being considered. Globally, several Augmented Reality applications have been made for the visualisation of rock art; however, none have yet been developed for the Nordic context, where conditions are affected by seasonal elements. With Tanum, Sweden, as a case study, this paper discusses the challenges in applying Augmented Reality to Nordic Rock Art.

ABSTRACT The Western conservation philosophy has become dominant among practitioners, thereby posing a dilemma in the treatment of African heritage. This article explores the traditional conservation principles and the dilemma they pose to the modern practitioners, using a case study of the Kondoa Rock Art World Heritage Site in Tanzania. Community engagement methods including in-depth interviews with 25 residents and 12 focus group discussions, and non-participant observation revealed that rock art is appreciated by residents as an active cultural construct, reflecting their connectivity with the past, identity, and future expectations. The residents employ the conservation system that is built on the principles of intangibility, change, and continuity. However, the dilemma still prevails with modern conservation principles of materiality, permanency, and durability of rock art, and aesthetics and artistic values. The study argues for an integrated approach, mixing modern and traditional conservation tenets, and for the significance of community engagement methods.
