Some recent articles in this journal have dealt with various ways to gain access to OCLC services. Modes of access have involved different software/hardware solutions to gain access via a Macintosh, a LAN, and a TCP/IP network (vol. 9, no. 4). In my column for this issue I′ll continue that theme. Network access has been a goal at the University of Oregon as well. So we were pleased to be a test site recently for PRISM access via the Internet.

The CORE project is an electronic library prototype that provides networked access to the full text and graphics content of American Chemical Society journals and associated Chemical Abstracts Service indexing since 1980 (some 250 journal years of data). The database is coded in Standard Generalized Markup Language (translated from original typography codes) which captures the structural richness of the original document and provides flexibility for indexing, searching, and display. The prototype provides a full‐scale laboratory environment in which to explore issues of database structure, user interface capabilities, and information retrieval questions on a large, real‐world scholarly electronic journal database. The complete database, representing more than 600,000 pages of full text and graphics, will be the largest electronic corpus of its kind. Scheduled for availability at Cornell in late 1993, this database will be available for use by the Cornell Chemistry Department faculty and students on a loca...

A useful way to pinpoint information in OCLC FirstSearch is through a wordlist bound‐phrase search. A bound‐phrase search looks for the full title, author, and so forth. exactly as you type it. A wordlist search will tell you how many hits to expect before you are charged for a search. You can also browse through the wordlist for additional related terms that may be of interest.

For libraries without an integrated online catalog equipped with an automated authority control function, the maintenance of an authority file is a highly complex and time‐consuming task. Although LC′s name and series authority records are readily available on OCLC, neither holdings nor local information can be added to these records and retained for future use. For the most part, libraries resort to maintaining a local authority file on 3 × 5 cards to assist in cataloging decision‐making.

The Borrowing Update System (BUS) is a customized application for tracking and reporting on current and past Interlibrary Loan requests processed using OCLC′s PRISM and Micro‐Enhancer. Developed in the ILL department at Virginia Tech′s Newman Library over the past two years, the BUS automates many of the common, previously manual, ILL tasks. Here, in this first of a two‐part article on the BUS, I will discuss the steps taken in planning the BUS and give a general overview of the BUS. In the next article, I′ll examine the problems and limitations, the future of the BUS, and explore the technical elements of the program, including the table structure of and some code examples from the BUS.

In Part 1 of my “Authors and Titles and MARC – Oh My!” (Fall 1993) I asked if you wanted me to do a similar article on the Authority File format. Well, there was a resounding reply to the affirmative. Well, maybe not resounding, but it was definitely a reply, more than one, even. Don′t laugh, I welcome all communication on this side of the column. It gets lonely facing these deadlines alone. You, the reader, have the luxury of reading this column whenever you want (well, within the parameters of routing it in a timely manner – I know). I, on the other hand, have to produce, on demand, an interesting, up‐to‐date, pithy expose on a PRISM/PASSPORT‐type topic that will grab your attention. Since I left AMIGOS and moved to this very quiet, private college, I′ve been wondering if anyone is out there...there...there... I′m feeling a little out of touch, so keep those electronic cards and letters coming in. That address: parkercc@class.org.

As CD‐ROM becomes more and more a standard reference and technical support tool in all types of libraries, the annual review of this technology published in Computers in Libraries magazine increases in size and scope. This year, author Susan L. Adkins has prepared this exceptionally useful bibliography which she has cross‐referenced with a subject index.

In the last issue of OCLC Systems and Services we examined a feasibility study being conducted by a few libraries and OCLC. This study was designed to explore the possibility of linking a library′s local ILL electronic request system to OCLC. The OCLC link eliminates the rekeying of patron requests, which reduces the ILL staff workload and speeds request inputting, both of which would be beneficial to any Interlibrary Loan department. Of the four participants in the study, one site, Southeast Florida Information Network, has entered its testing mode, and only one site, Colorado State University, has successfully implemented and is currently using this link.

A consumer survey of document delivery in academic settings was conducted using a conjoint analysis approach. During interviews with 79 randomly chosen faculty members and graduate students at three Ohio universities, respondents were each asked to answer hypothetical questions about ordering a desired article. Questions focused on ordering articles from a commercial document delivery service or through interlibrary loan. Factors such as the price of the document, the speed of delivery, and the method of ordering were varied from question to question. Survey results found the price of the document to be the most important consideration. Respondents also expressed more willingness to use interlibrary loan than a commercial service.
