Malaysia, home to a multiracial community consisting of Malay, Chinese, Indian and others, typically practise two or more languages as Malay language is the official national language and English is the second language. The use of translanguaging amongst Malaysians is regular in spoken as well as written discourse. This particular research examined the use of translanguaging in written discourse, specifically in a comic book by Malaysian cartoonist Ernest Ng titled If Malaysia was Anime: Covidball Z. This comic book addresses real Malaysian scenarios such as the recent Covid-19 pandemic and political scenes with an adoption of Malaysian style of spoken discourse in written form. This research aims to explore the use of translanguaging in the mentioned comic book and explore Malaysians' views of the use of translanguaging in this comic book through interviews. To determine the use of translanguaging in the comic book, this study adopted Jakobson's (1987) six language functions as the theoretical framework. The findings of this study revealed that out of the six language functions stated by Jakobson, five were found in the comic book excluding the phatic function. Most interviewees were also found to have positive perceptions towards the use of translanguaging in comic books as it could display Malaysians' unique plurilingual communication skills. © 2023 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Benefits Perceived by Vietnamese EFL Learners and Their Engagement in Online Collaborative Learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic 2019

The benefits of collaborative learning have been proven by previous research across disciplines, contexts, and levels of education. The present study aims to validate these benefits perceived by 76 English-As-A-foreign-language (EFL) learners who experienced online-collaborative learning via group work activities in English translation classes at a local university, South Vietnam during the Covid-19 pandemic. Surveying these learners at the end of the course via a questionnaire and analyzing their reciprocal assignment discussion recordings were carried out. The survey results uncovered that the learners highly appreciated online collaborative learning because they perceived that it was beneficial to their future life, career, cognition, and social communication strategies. Their positive view on collaborative learning benefits was deemed to engage them in online group work activities while interacting with partners to complete shared assignments. Furthermore, the empirical discussion recordings analysis documented their sound engagement via a range of group work interactive acts. It is believed that these online purposeful interactions make learning occur, knowledge acquired, and social skills reinforced by the learners. As a result, the present study not only validates the robust benefits reported in previous studies, but also it could be used as a guidance to implement collaborative learning in teaching other subjects other than English translation. © 2023 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Tertiary Students’ Perceptions of Learning Oral Presentation Skills in In-Class and Online Learning Environment: A Case Study

Online learning is seen to be the solution to education throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Instructional sessions and assessments are conducted in the virtual setting which affects instructors and students alike. Oral assessments like presentation sessions are conducted on teleconferencing platforms which bring different dimensions in pedagogy and online learning strategies employed by students. Thus, this study aimed to determine undergraduates perceptions of online and in-class presentations. These undergraduates went through remote learning sessions and were not physically campus bound. For this study, the mixed-method approach was adopted and a set of questionnaires with two open-ended questions was distributed online to 1187 Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) undergraduates who were enrolled in the English for Professional Communication (UHL2432) course for Semester 2, session 2020/2021. Quantitative data were collected, and the descriptive statistics were calculated. The findings revealed students mixed perceptions towards the effectiveness of applying delivery skills and elements of professionalism in online and in-class oral presentations. Furthermore, although findings have shown that students have adapted to online learning and preferred certain elements of oral presentation in a virtual environment, they also indicated that students preferred to learn oral presentations in a face-To-face classroom. Students mixed perceptions were due to challenges in aspects such as maintaining eye contact, projecting voice, using visual aids, gestures and postures as well as interacting with the audience virtually. The findings of this study will provide a useful guide for the enhancement and development of online teaching and learning methodologies. © 2023 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
