preoccupations of letters where neither genre takes precedence” (198). Michael O’Neill contrasts Percy Shelley’s letters from Italy with the letters of contemporaries such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats, suggesting that Shelley’s letters evince the “sensibility, awareness of natural beauty, and questioning intelligence” that mark Mary Wollstonecraft’s Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796). For O’Neill, Shelley’s “epistolary prose is light on its feet, mercurial, a messenger from the poet’s godlike thought that is also an incarnation of such thought” (217). Anthony Howe identifies some of the drawbacks of relying on standard print editions, where an author’s writings are usually organized by genre, thus concealing the provocative “hybrid character” that may be central to their achievement. After touching on what is missed by printing Shelley’s A Defence of Poetry alongside his early political prose, Howe turns to several poems by Keats to provide readings that would be “impossible for readers of most standard editions of the poetry,” which divorce the poems from their original epistolary context (251). Finally, beginning with a discussion of the epistolary aspects of Mary Shelley’s first novel Frankenstein, Angela Wright explores how her subsequent fiction and her letters after the death of her husband interrelate as she works through her grief. If the letters of Romantic period authors have for the most part been viewed as a supplement to the creative work, valuable for substance to the exclusion of literary qualities, Romanticism and the Letter does much to challenge this misconception while opening the way to further critical work on the epistolary culture and aesthetics of the early nineteenth century.

Some of these were spontaneous and others were solicited and collected by scholarly organizations such as the Centre for Life Writing at Oxford and the Mass Observation Project at the University of Sussex. Henderson’s text likewise draws examples from far and wide, including a course syllabus on life writing at the University of Texas at Arlington, and she cites diaries written in diverse cultures (including Iraqi, Vietnamese, French, Polish, Japanese, American, and Canadian diaries) and diaries written from diverse perspectives from the sixteenth century to the present with the most recent online examples. In short, Henderson’s how-to text is a springboard for many kinds of discussions and projects, a useful starting point for researchers and students, effectively and wisely packaged but covering a wide array of topics that all fit in that elusive but intriguing category of the “diary.”

memory work as part of writing her life narrative in the context of imperial networks and Australia as part of an ongoing settler colonial nation. In different ways, the case studies highlight the active role of researchers, while posing questions and possibilities about how scholars might create and sustain research projects that have the potential for significant community impact and engagement. In collecting life stories for research, Andrew Jakubowicz reflects on the novel technologies he has utilized throughout his career and how these technologies can facilitate connections with audiences and be used by people who are sharing their life stories. In particular, Jakubowicz highlights the impacts of having recordings of people’s speech publicly available on a dedicated website where listeners can hear “the tonal and intonal components” of people’s narratives and “the stresses the narrators placed on words and phrases.” Jakubowicz notes that through these recordings listeners can hear “how hindsight has helped shape their accounts” (190). In the context of Melbourne’s Immigration Museum, Moya McFadzean explains how “new technologies” have enabled “more sophisticated memory enactments,” which pose challenges for curators in preserving “the authenticity of memories of migrations,” but also have the potential to “transform the world view of visitors” (256). While these are only two examples, what is evident throughout this collection is the place of technologies in creating new opportunities, which are not without constraints, for collecting, understanding, preserving, and sharing life stories. Remembering Migration provides those researching and writing about life narratives many case studies that cross time, place, and generations to engage with scholarship that centers the lives and legacies of individuals. Collectively, the works critically assess the power of disciplinary discourses, institutions, and organizations, considering how they function to represent and remember people’s lives. The book provides exciting examples of how scholars might engage with communities and work towards expanding the life stories featured in the public realm, and it showcases innovative ways for stories to be shared and understood.

Abstract:How should we regard the characters and accomplishments of celebrities? We examine this question by drawing upon virtue ethics in political philosophy as a set of analytical tools and a framework for thinking about life writing about celebrities. We apply our virtue ethics framework, informed especially by Aristotle's views about human excellence and honor and Alasdair MacIntyre's concept of narrative unity and self-reflection, to the life stories of the well-known humanist, activist, and performer Paul Robeson and the celebrity president Donald Trump. Our analysis helps account for both the nature of discontent with celebrity culture and why we admire a subclass of celebrities who display particular attributes. It also demonstrates life writing's relevance to and inseparability from central concepts in virtue ethics.

Abstract:This article examines the biographical and psychoanalytic works of Freud's biographer Isidor Sadger (1867–1942), placing these works within the broader context of the role of lifewriting genres in the history of psychoanalysis. Sadger is presented as a key figure in the development of one psychographic genre in the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (1902–1938). Although one of the most prolific authors within Freud's circle, Sadger's works remain largely forgotten. The author analyzes Sadger's unknown psychographic and biographic works, and reveals his largely overlooked theories of literature and the psychology of creators. A close reading of his biography, Recollecting Freud (Sigmund Freud, persönliche Erinnerungen), sheds new light on the relationship between life writing, literary experimentalism, and early psychoanalysis.
