Purpose Identifying and analyzing aspects related to sustainable human resources (HRs) in an emerging, Iberoamerican location (Monterrey, Mexico). Documenting employee experiences regarding sustainable practices of HR in their companies to understand the enacted meaning of sustainable HR management (HRM). This study aims to seek answers to understand the ways environmental sustainability is present in HR subprocesses and the ways companies regard HRs from a sustainability perspective. Design/methodology/approach This exploratory research has a qualitative approach. The authors collected and summarized semi-structured interviews with 31 key informants that work fully or partially in HRs in a large, industrialized city in an Iberoamerican, emerging economy (Monterrey, Mexico). Findings The main findings based on responses from HR professionals are as follows: HR activities may contribute to the sustainability of the business and its physical environment; HR can create a culture of care for the resources, but training and development activities are not currently used optimally; and in addition to the economic sustainability of the employers, social and environmental sustainability are also within HR’s influence sphere. Originality/value This study contributes to the emerging literature on sustainability in HRM, due the dearth of information related to “green” or environmental practices in HRM. This study reports specifically on the ways this perspective adds value within Mexican enterprises, but the authors are confident that these findings also generalize across industries, enterprises and regions.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret the effect of governmental financial support to generate knowledge-based collaborations between actors in cross-border regions for the design of mission-oriented policies to improve the regionalization process taking into account the interregional innovation systems in Peru. Design/methodology/approach Innovation systems, social network analysis and mission-oriented policies contribute to analyze links between border subnational territories and to build strategies toward interregional innovation systems. Findings A total of 5 out of 18 possible regional interactions are strong enough to be considered interregional innovation systems. Thus, mission-oriented policies may be designed to strengthen ties between regions. Research limitations/implications As the amount of data observed is not large enough, this study and its outcomes must be considered an exploratory exercise. Originality/value Innovation policy design based on the Peruvian context and evidence opens opportunities to rethink regionalization processes in the country.

Purpose This paper aims to explore if employee engagement (EE) influences the relationship quality of long-term partnerships between non-profit organisations (NPO) and for-profit organisations (FPO) and offer a theoretical framework for NPO and FPO long-term partnerships’ success based on the literature. Design/methodology/approach The study resorts to qualitative research, and through 45 in-depth structured interviews with NPO and FPO employees, this paper intends to investigate the theoretical framework using a hypothetico-deductive method. Findings The findings support the authors’ theoretical framework, where EE influences satisfaction, trust and commitment to the partnership. The results highlight that organisations creating high levels of satisfaction, trust and commitment may have a higher propensity for long-term partnerships. Originality/value This study offers a novel theoretical framework for developing long-term partnerships between NPO and FPO. However, each variable’s extent of influence still needs to be further explored, creating a fertile ground for future research in this area.

Purpose The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has brought us a serious economic, health and social problem worldwide crisis. In this context, there has been an increase in inequality between men and women throughout the world. In this situation of home confinement, uncertainty, stress and fear, women have been the most affected, regardless of their education level. The purpose of this study is to know the impact on the perception of academic women who suffered from a lack of gender equality (sustainable development) during the pandemic (SDG 5) and, therefore, the increase in the gender inequality gap (SDG 10) in Latin America (LA). Design/methodology/approach This qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study has a nonexperimental field and cross-sectional design that uses the field technique of focus groups. Findings This study revealed the deepest feelings of women researchers on this issue, leading to a deep reflection on the need to build the basis to transform unequal gender relations and introduce the gender perspective in a cross-sectional manner in a university context. Originality/value This study, analyzed from a gender perspective, aimed to unravel the complexity in which the majority of LA women academics live and to explain the gaps and differences in their lives caused by the inequalities that have increased due to the pandemic in Latin American societies.

Purpose This study aims to explore the degree of diversity and coherence of the components of an entrepreneurial ecosystem at the micro, meso and macro levels in Central Sabana Province in Colombia to establish the strengths and opportunities for improvement of the mentioned ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach This study uses cross-sectional analysis of multiple cases. Findings The entrepreneurial ecosystem under study can be categorized as an imbalanced system due to the great diversity it presents in terms of its actors, resources and support programs. Regarding coherence, the ecosystem has not achieved a common objective regarding entrepreneurial processes or the recognition of the strengths of its actors and the specific needs of the entrepreneurs. Practical and social implications The study of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in a particular region has allowed the identification of the strengths of the ecosystem; the establishment of the degree of alignment of actors, resources and programs in the region; the identification of the preference of support and programs for certain types of enterprises with low economic and social impacts; and the characterization of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the province as self-organized but in need of institutional leadership that supports the effort required for the consolidation of the ecosystem. Originality/value Unlike traditional approaches in this field of study, this paper approaches a regional entrepreneurial ecosystem from a qualitative perspective through eight categories of analysis grouped into three levels of study: macro, meso and micro, exploring the degree of diversity and coherence of the actors and their interactions in the ecosystem.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to present validation evidence of a Portuguese version of the multidimensional work motivation scale, an instrument within the framework of the self-determination theory, suitable for both Brazil and Portugal. Design/methodology/approach The current study demonstrates the suitability of this version in both Portugal (N = 999) and Brazil (N = 720). The authors applied confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and tested the invariance between samples. Findings Results from CFA found the same structural dimensions as in the original study, invariant across both samples. Convergent and discriminant validity were shown through correlations between motivation subscales with affective commitment and emotional exhaustion. Originality/value Overall, the data provided strong evidence for the reliability and validity of the Portuguese version of the scale and reinforces the instrument as a cross-culturally valid measure of work motivation.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the economic and social factors that influence individual savings in Brazil based on the life cycle hypothesis (LCH). Design/methodology/approach The authors use data sourced from 2017 to 2018 Household Budget Surveys to analyse the individual savings of Brazilian aged from 18 to 80. Findings Using a conventional logistic regression model, results of this study suggest that several demographic characteristics, such as education, economic and social factors, influence individual savings in Brazil. For instance, this paper finds a non-linear relationship between age and individual savings, following LCH concepts. Originality value These data provide us with a unique opportunity to investigate the determinants of individual savings in Brazil. In examining this question, this study contributes to the literature by providing new evidence to help the current political debate about the Brazilian social security system. Against this background, social policies should be designed to promote savings, especially in groups with a lower likelihood of savings.

Purpose This study aims to analyse the effect of brand interactions such as personal interaction, problem-solving, reliability and store physical appearance on channel loyalty and purchase intention in optical physical stores. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses are tested through quantitative research based on a questionnaire with a sample of 414 respondents. Researchers conduct multiple regressions to analyse the data. Findings The findings reveal that channel loyalty and purchase intention are positively influenced differently. Person-to-person interactions play a vital role in both constructs (dependent variables). This study also offers relevant managerial implications and future research avenues. Originality/value Despite the relevance of purchase intention in the literature, almost no studies have been published about the intention to buy glasses in the optical physical stores, a relevant contribution this paper offers to the literature. The finding that the store’s physical aspect did not prove to be influential for channel loyalty is also an innovative and relevant contribution of this research.

Purpose Given the lack of theoretical and empirical research on high-growth entrepreneurs in developed and developing economies; this paper aims to answer, what are the main definitions and typologies used to explain the high-growth phenomenon? How could be described the high-growth entrepreneurs’ life cycle? And what are the main findings and limitations in the empirical research of high-growth entrepreneurship? Design/methodology/approach To advance the study of high-growth entrepreneurship and provide a means through which these advancements can contribute to the understanding of how this phenomenon is defined, the authors organize and review the extant literature based on the foundational definition of entrepreneurship, the typologies used to describe it and the phases of new venture process. The final sample of this methodology consisted of 54 empirical works that explored this issue from 2010 to 2020. Findings This research develops a roadmap on the current state of high-growth entrepreneurship and provides suggestions to guide future research in extending the understanding of this phenomenon. Practical implications The theoretical frameworks developed could be used for both policymakers and entrepreneurs to understand the variables that affect the entrepreneurial life cycle and how they could increase the likelihood of survival of new firms in developed and developing economies. Originality/value The research provides evidence about the definitions and entrepreneurial typologies used to describe the high-growth ventures, bridging unconnected theoretical frameworks and proposing an integrated view to exploring the phenomena in a new setting.
