SUMMARY:The articles argues that during the last Soviet decades, preservationist activism focused on sites of historical heritage mobilized public interest and produced cohesion of the Soviet intelligentsia as a collective social actor and thus a distinctive social group. This approach deconstructs the notion of "intelligentsia" as an elusive self-referential entity – a stable community of formal status. Instead, "intelligentsia" is interpreted as a situational product of a social process that demonstrated groupness only inasmuch as its participants shared common scenarios of activism. The article specifically studies the case of the Valaam archipelago in Lake Ladoga, the site of a fourteenth-century Orthodox monastery, as a venue for developing in the 1960s–1980s the cohesiveness of the intelligentsia as an emotional community and a collective social agent. Since the mid-1960s, Valaam has been a popular tourist destination that attracts Soviet citizens seeking to "perform cultureness" by experiencing exquisite "cultural consumption." With old monastery buildings neglected or occupied by retirement homes for war veterans, Valaam emblematized cultural ruins. As a powerful symbol of historical discontinuity and loss, it was an ideal object for the rhetoric of salvation developed by Soviet preservationists. People who shared this rhetoric and concern coalesced into a group that has typically been identified as "intelligentsia." Some of the activists moved to live on Valaam more or less permanently, forming the local cultural elite who considered it a place for communal work and spirituality. Through the late 1980s, the community of Valaam preservationists mobilized and politicized by escalating the rhetoric of loss and identifying the Russian Orthodox Church as a force capable of restoring Valaam to its alleged former glory. Such rhetoric and the practical scenario brought together various groups of preservationists into a single community of social action. However, when the Russian Orthodox Church eventually fully legalized and firmly established itself in the political sphere, the result was disappointing to the intelligentsia activists. The return of the former monastery to the church, an event wholeheartedly propagated by the old Valaam keepers, made the intelligentsia redundant and even discredited them as members of the Soviet establishment. No longer having a common mission and single object of devotion, they lost their former discursive unity and group cohesiveness, and thus experienced bitter disillusionment with their goal and mission.

The Tensions of Positionality Reflection 位置反思的张力

SUMMARY:This is a contribution to the discussion forum "Conceptualizing Society after the Modern Territorial State and Nation." Marlene Laruelle agrees with the need for the decolonization of "Eurasia" as a political space and a research field, along with the deconstruction of Russia's "imperialness." By outlining the main tropes of the ongoing discussion, she points to the ambiguity of the key categories that frame it and hence to the tensions among the various meanings of those unclarified categories. She identifies the main tension between the proclaimed emancipatory goals, both political and epistemological, of the decolonization debate and the fundamental nation-centrism of the prevailing mode of social critique.Резюме:Это эссе является частью дискуссионного форума "Концептуализация общества после модерного территориального государства и нации". Historians of the British Empire like to cite Salman Rushdie’s line in the Satanic Verses that the British don’t know their own history because so much of it happened overseas.1 Some of Russia’s history unfolded elsewhere, too. Victor Taki’s book on Russia’s Danubian protectorates provides an intriguing example. Using sources in French, Romanian, and Russian, Taki explores the politics of reform in the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia across several decades, paying close attention to diverse political interests within those polities and to the tsarist authorities who became arbiters of political developments there for decades. At the core of the book is a period encompassing the aftermaths of two Russo-Ottoman wars (1806–1812 and 1828–1829), over the course of which “Russian provincial authorities” in the region скому контексту и различным этническим группам, населяющим беларуские земли, в первую очередь евреям и татарам. SUMMARY:The decades following the antiforeign Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901) in China saw the culmination of the Russian Orthodox mission to the Chinese, as the Chinese Orthodox community expanded both geographically and numerically. This article attributes this rapid development to changes in the approaches to proselytizing. The Chinese Orthodox clergy played a central role in this process. Using the case study of celebrating All Saint Martyrs Day, commemorating the Orthodox victims of the Boxer Rebellion, the article emphasizes the importance of religious rituals in attracting new members to the Orthodox Church.Резюме:Деятельность Русской духовной миссии в Пекине достигла наибольшего своего масштаба и эффективности в десятилетия после подавления боксерского восстания против иностранцев (1899–1901 гг.). Farrow has made a significant and much-needed contribution to a long-neglected field that has lately acquired special importance and urgency. Given the fact that the resurrected spirit of Constantin Catacazy has made recent appearances in Russian popular culture and media, this learned, wellresearched, and well-written book is not to be missed.19

SUMMARY:Oksana Ermolaeva's article discusses the creation of the Soviet-Finnish border during the first postrevolutionary decade as well as sociopolitical processes in the Soviet borderland. All forms of social interaction in the zone adjacent to the Soviet-Finnish border – population mobility, economic transactions, cross-cultural influences – are regarded as markers of domestic processes of early Soviet state-building. In the article, the concept of the border is used simultaneously as a mirror reflecting the emerging Soviet state and as a magnifying glass helping to better discern some aspects of this process. Until the late 1920s, the borderline remained not simply "porous" or "traversable," but "situational." Illegal cross-border traffic was caused by the new state border cutting through established economic ties and even more so by the flight of numerous borderland residents to Finland in the wake of the Civil War. Some of the refugees returned to the USSR under the terms of an amnesty that threatened to confiscate the land and property of those who stayed abroad. Families split up, delegating some of their members to return to the Soviet side to claim the family property. The separated families and whole borderland communities could sustain communication only through illegal transborder contacts. As locals, they knew how and where to cross the border while managing to avoid the border guards. All forms of social interaction in the zone adjacent to the Soviet-Finnish border – population mobility, economic transactions, cross-cultural influences – are regarded as markers of domestic processes of early Soviet state-building. In the article, the concept of the border is used simultaneously as a mirror reflecting the emerging Soviet state and as a magnifying glass helping to better discern some aspects of this process. Until the late 1920s, the borderline remained not simply \"porous\" or \"traversable,\" but \"situational.\" Illegal cross-border traffic was caused by the new state border cutting through established economic ties and even more so by the flight of numerous borderland residents to Finland in the wake of the Civil War. Some of the refugees returned to the USSR under the terms of an amnesty that threatened to confiscate the land and property of those who stayed abroad. Families split up, delegating some of their members to return to the Soviet side to claim the family property. The separated families and whole borderland communities could sustain communication only through illegal transborder contacts. As locals, they knew how and where to cross the border while managing to avoid the border guards. SUMMARY:This is the introduction to the publication of a diary started by a young Muscovite in October 1940 as he was drafted into the Red Army to serve in the border-guard force in southern Georgia, on the border with Turkey. Since this armed force was subordinated to the infamous Soviet security service – the NKVD – when the Soviet-German war started in 1941, he continued service in the NKVD troops, seeing combat for the last time in May 1944 in fighting Ukrainian resistance. Klimentii Fedevich purchased this document two decades ago by chance at an estate sale; it is published without revealing the author's identity due to the sensitivity of its content. The text contains two intertwined narratives: one is sustained by a detailed record of actions and events, and the other by verbose discourses about personal relations and political ideals. Combining ethnographic details and fiction, the diary opens a window on the worldview of a young Soviet man from a privileged family.
