ABSTRACTThis paper investigates the perceived impact of the intergenerational component of an Ageing Well Program from the perspectives of the older adult and university student participants. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used, with data being collected via semi-structured interviews. Seven older adults and six students who participated in the most recent program were interviewed. “Forming Connections,” “Getting to Know the Older Adults” and “Assisting the Students Through the Learning Process” were the key themes that emerged from the data. Ultimately, it was perceived that the inclusion of an intergenerational component was of greater benefit to the university students.KEYWORDS: Intergenerational relationshipsactive agingolder adultsuniversity studentsinterpretative phenomenological analysis Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).

Effectiveness of Intergenerational Exchange Programs Between Adolescents and Older Adults: A Systematic Review

Communities are aging and becoming more segregated, leading to fractured relationships between generations. Intergenerational exchange has improved cohesion, particularly when different generations engage as equal partners. This paper presents a systematic review of intergenerational studies between adolescents and older adults. Thirteen papers were reviewed using PRISMA guidelines, and outcomes, methodological quality, facilitators, and barriers identified, to better understand effectiveness and inform recommendations for future practice. The framework informed quality assessment, and the papers were rated moderate or high quality. Unfortunately, heterogeneity across studies rendered comparison challenging. Further attention is required to elucidate guidelines for implementing and reporting intergenerational studies.

First-Time Grandparenthood: Effects of On-Timeness and Off-Timeness
Q3 GERONTOLOGY Pub Date : 2023-10-10 DOI: 10.1080/15350770.2023.2267539
Bert Hayslip, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez
ABSTRACTThe present study explored the impact of the timeliness of first-time grandparenthood on grandparent well-being, role assumption, and grandchild relationship quality. Relying upon data gathered from 550 grandparents (M age = 63.53), the age at which persons first became grandparents was calculated and criteria for assessing the timeliness of its impact were developed. Comparisons across five age categories of timeliness as well as a three category schema suggested that while the timing of first-time grandparenthood negatively impacted adults’ emotional connection to a target grandchild, their efficacy as grandparents, their personal well-being, and their physical health, the strength and direction of such effects varied by specific grandparent outcomes. Having information regarding grandparent timeliness would be valuable in designing prospective (prior to the grandchild’s birth) support/or educational programs for such persons as well as for grandparents who are raising a grandchild at an inopportune time in their lives.KEYWORDS: Grandparentinglife eventson-timenessoff-timeness Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).
