ABSTRACT Given the new and unprecedented challenges faced by older people during the COVID-19 pandemic globally, this study explored the social impact of COVID-19 on older people in rural Nigeria. Data was collected from 20 older persons using in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that the pandemic has limited the rural older people’s social support and social contact with loved ones, leading to their increased poverty and loneliness due to their dependence on intergenerational support. The study recommends creative ways to safely maintain connectedness with older people, and expansion of the Nigerian pension policy to ensure income security for all older people as the pandemic has exposed the unsustainability of dependence on social networks.

ABSTRACT Intergenerational programs that bring the young and old together are known to facilitate social connections. However, benefits of intergenerational programs cannot be achieved by simply bringing the two generations together. We need to understand the factors which enhance intergenerational engagement. This paper specifically explores barriers and enablers for improving engagement of older people in an intergenerational program conducted within four research sites in South East Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Video ethnography was used to examine the intergenerational environment and observe patterns of engagement between older people and children. Findings reveal the type of activity, group structure and length of activity to increase engagement of older people in an intergenerational program.

ABSTRACT This paper examines older people’s experiences of intergenerational interaction during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Aotearoa, New Zealand (NZ). This paper presents an analysis of a letter-writing study with older people (mean = 77 years) living in NZ. A total of 760 letters were received from 870 participants. A sub-sample of 412 letters focused on intergenerational interaction were analyzed thematically. This analysis presents a mostly positive picture of intergenerational interaction particularly on the family and neighborhood level. Letters highlighted narratives of mutual concern and positive interactions between generations while also hinting at some underlying age-related tension on a societal level.

ABSTRACT Little is known about how local knowledge informs the way that families provide care for older people beyond the role played by the cultural values of obligation and reciprocity. Better understanding of the role of local knowledge in caregiving practices can contribute to the improvement of support for family caregiving in particular contexts. Addressing this knowledge gap, this study identifies forms of local knowledge that play a role in the way care is provided for older family members in multigenerational Balinese households. Narrative interviews were conducted with 49 members of 11 multigenerational households in Bali. Using thematic analysis, four important forms of local knowledge were identified: (i) caring as intergenerational obligation; (ii) caring to meet needs; (iii) caring in harmony; and (iv) caring through social connections. These local findings contribute to the global discussion on family relationships, the role of social networks, and medical practices on aging and policy.

ABSTRACT This study sought to understand the experiences of intergenerational caregiving among urban poor women belonging to the Sandwich Generation that is individuals who care for both their children and aging parents. Guided by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, we explored the experiences of eight Filipina mothers. Results revealed how societal/cultural expectations contributed to their willingness to accept the responsibility to be intergenerational caregivers, and how socioeconomic conditions influenced the existence of this care cycle. Findings point to how financial, material and policy support from government and workplaces may enable better provision of care for the parents and children of urban poor Filipino women as well as allow for self-care. Reframing traditional gender roles especially in child-rearing as well as discouraging culturally-shaped practices that engender the continuation of the care cycle through education may help in addressing the structurally enabled challenges experienced by women in the Sandwich Generation.

ABSTRACT This qualitative study explored the digital communication skills assistance provided by young adults in the age range 18 to 25 years to older family members during the period of the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in Ireland in 2020. Data were collected from a sample of young adults (n = 248) using an online survey instrument to explore their learnings from the intergenerational exchange. The study found that young adults who assisted their older family members considered the learning experience to be successful and were rewarded with reciprocal benefits. This study contributes to the field of intergenerational research by exploring the perspectives of young adults involved in an intergenerational exchange to support the digital skills of their older adult family members in Ireland.

ABSTRACT In the present study, we examined whether pressing developmental tasks, that is identity formation and generativity, and personality traits predict nursing home residents’ and students’ willingness to take part in an intergenerational encounter program. A total of 406 students and 114 nursing home residents reported on personality traits, age-relevant developmental tasks, and their willingness to participate in the program. Analyses verified that higher levels of openness were positively associated with participation willingness in both age groups. In addition, lower self-concept clarity among students and higher concern for generativity among older adults predicted their willingness for program participation. Findings are discussed with respect to their relevance for the planning of similar intervention programs in future.

ABSTRACT This Reflection from the Field examines the need for intergenerational programming within the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander population. Disenfranchisement, external migration, and changing socio-economic demands have created barriers to cultural transmission to younger generations. This article examines intergenerational programs in native populations in the U.S. and internationally and discusses potential applications to Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in Hawaii.

ABSTRACT “OK boomer,” is a viral phrase used by members of Generation Z to dismiss the opinions of older adults. Given the rise in usage of and the varied reactions to the phrase, it is important to understand how, “OK boomer,” was portrayed in print media. To do so, news articles from the New York Times (NYT), Wall Street Journal (WSJ), and Washington Post (WaPo) that were printed during October 2019-February 2020 were collected. After organizing the data, a thematic analysis was completed, which showed that “OK boomer” was depicted as a form of demagogic discourse that reinforced age-based stereotypes. This portrayal relied on (1) an oversimplified definition of the phrase that was grounded in unidimensional stereotypes (2) the reinforcement of generational divides, and (3) the acceptance of ageist communicative behaviors in intergenerational interactions. Based on these findings, a series of theoretical and applied implications that problematize the use of the phrase and encourage productive intergenerational interactions are provided.

Given the rise in usage of and the varied reactions to the phrase, it is important to understand how, “OK boomer,” was portrayed in print media. To do so, news articles from the New York Times (NYT), Wall Street Journal (WSJ), and Washington Post (WaPo) that were printed during October 2019-February 2020 were collected. After organizing the data, a thematic analysis was completed, which showed that “OK boomer” was depicted as a form of demagogic discourse that reinforced age-based stereotypes. This portrayal relied on (1) an oversimplified definition of the phrase that was grounded in unidimensional stereotypes (2) the reinforcement of generational divides, and (3) the acceptance of ageist communicative behaviors in intergenerational interactions. Based on these findings, a series of theoretical and applied implications that problematize the use of the phrase and encourage productive intergenerational interactions are provided.","PeriodicalId":46132,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intergenerational Relationships","volume":"21 1","pages":"253 - 268"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2022-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46144655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
